I think if they connect the Pan-American highway, of course do customs inspections and the like, but it would boost the economic welfare of all south American countries shipping by fail or truck is way cheaper and easier than by ship, also the tourist dollars from people driving the highway for recreational activities would be huge.

What is it about the Colombians that makes them criminals. They're no different than other humans. The reasons for not completing a road are purely political. And if there's one thing humans never get right, it's politics. With current engineering and construction capabilities, crossing the gap would be easier than the Central Pacific's part of the Transcontinental railroad... much much easier. And going around left or right end in the ocean is just an example of human stupidity.

The road through the Darien gap needs to get done.
We could bring modern hospitals to the people there.
We would cure all those murderous gang problems. We need to get out of the past and roll into the future . Roads are it. Trains are costly & can't go where roads
Can. Let's get in touch with our politicians & make it happen

People are walking through it and polluting it anyway, and building a both road and rail line through it may save the jungle more than we realize. Environmentalists have good intentions, but the road to h-ll is paved with good intentions. Build it now!

We need to grow-up as a one hemisphere. Completion of a road through the Darien gap would accomplish that. All the bull talk of affecting those civilizations is just that--Bull talk. We, as humans, have advanced through the biblical ages to get to where we are today. The concept of the coward ideas of snakes, insects and, other vermin is just silly. Let's take our hemisphere back from those drug lords and para-military and move into the modern 21st century. We can enrich those peoples of the area with medicines, proper foods and, nameless other advantages. Cultural advances would be priceless. ALL
of us western hemisphere people should buy into this road.

I guess I would go along with the folks in Panama. The Gap helps keep the rift raft back from the South. So, for the moment, don't change it. If you do, I think an elevated monorail would be less expensive and would be a paying tourist attraction where it ran thru jungle, etc. But I suppose if you build any of that, you would also have to build a service road below, which gets you back to the initial problem.

Over my 84 years, I return from time to time to the dream of driving the Pan American highway. The idea alone symbolizes uniting and appreciating all the different and rich cultures of people and nature of our hemisphere. There is a oneness, a sense of wholeness. This is different from my sense of relations with people and nature on other sides of the oceans.
