It is funny that we do not think about the pandemic of 2009-2010. Approximately 61 million people got infected in the United States and 12. 400 people died. There were approximately 576,000 deaths worldwide. The government did not do these lockdowns like they are doing for the coronavirus. These figures are from the CDC. I know a neighbor of mine, he said from November 2019-February 2020 approximately 37000 people died from the regular flu. What makes this virus so special. Maybe one guess is that there are more ..media outlets and more people on social media. The last pandemic of 2009 was ten years ago and not many people remember it.

Thanks, Ron

I agree with you totally. You can track the onset of fear-mongering hysteria to the advent of 24 hour news. When I grew up, there was the 6 o’clock news. Then a replay of that at 10 o’clock that might include an update or two. That’s it. With commercials, about 22 or so minutes a day, or double that in the big “news hour” shows. Now there is 24/7/365 news, and frankly, nothing more happening than there was back when. So how do you fill it up? You manufacture news. You over-inflate everything in hopes of getting people to stay connected or come back. You fear-monger worse than has ever been foisted on the world. Fear always brings people back, because they have convinced themselves by fear that they cannot fail to know everything the second it can be known. We have forced that onto our government via expectation, and ruthless destruction of anyone who, in hindsight, didn’t do every single thing that could be done. The ridiculous mindset that “we can never let this happen again” when you can’t prevent everything that might happen has set many up for unavoidable failure. The coronavirus is the latest of many, and the blood of this fiasco is on the hands of the National and International media. And on “we the people” for being the addicts that just won’t stop abusing the drug of fear.

Sooner or later there will be a real killer virus (probably) threatening to become pandemic. We are lucky with this one. Its unclear whether the lessons learned from the current experience will be the need to tighten up disease reporting (and have more open communications in societies like China), the need to support public health in poor countries with weak infrastructure, the need for resilience and disaster management planning, the need for more modelling and speedier methods of vaccine development .... or to a "medics crying wolf again" response to future threats. It is important to learn the lessons from this, not just to critique people for getting it wrong.
