While there are many kinds of digital twins, this one is a twin of all the information you absorb visually through your eyes and audiologically through your ears. With a few added sensors, it will record everything you touch, taste, smell, and feel in and around your body.

After all, education is not singularly about what academia says is important. It’s about the hundreds of millions of pieces of minutia needed to turn you into the person you most want to become. And that’s where your digital twin comes into play.

Digital Twins

Imagine having perfect recall of everything you read, heard, smelled, or experienced. Imagine having a perfect recall of the third chapter of the management book you read two years ago. Imagine having perfect recall of the Ted Talk that inspired you. This podcast challenged your assumptions, and the audiobook helped you crystalize your thinking or who said what at the public forum you attended.

The digital twins I’m referring to are living, breathing replicas of your brain that will turbocharge your capabilities in ways we can’t even imagine yet. You will instantly be able to remember where you left your car keys, your presentation material for your next meeting, or that famous quote you hoped would make your argument more convincing. You will instantly be able to remember formulas you only glanced at in last year’s physics class, the instruction sheet for assembling your robot that somehow got lost, or that tiny detail captured by your surveillance drone during the last snowstorm.

Finding the perfect interface is naturally the place where the rubber meets the road. Having access to tons of data is certainly not helpful. But having access to the exact right piece of information at the moment, you need it will be incredibly valuable.

I’m not even sure what you call a user interface that takes place inside your mind, but making this interaction with our digital twin as precise, seamless, and instantaneous as possible will be the secret to making this work.

AI Engineers Hold the Key

This is where artificial intelligence (AI) comes into play and why I believe AI engineers hold the key to future education.

For most people, AI is the magical genie in some invisible box that is redefining a new state of normal on a daily basis. AI is not something that we can touch, feel, taste, swallow, or toss back and forth like a ball. Not yet, anyway. But soon, it will become part of each of these activities. The change will be so gradual it will be hard to notice until one day, and we won’t know how to live without it.

Now, if we add augmented reality (AR) to the AI, we begin to see where the true magic happens.

Adding AR to AI

The next generation of AR smart glasses will not be able to create fully immersive virtual worlds like virtual reality (VR) headsets can. Instead, they will have similar functionality to the heads-up displays found in fighter jets and luxury cars, providing a transparent overlay of information. They will be equipped with mini-microphones and speakers for a more integrated experience.

Information will be presented at the user’s eye and ear level, which may be distracting for some, but will not block out the real world as VR does. For now, AR and VR glasses will be separate due to VR’s need for more powerful computing and larger devices. However, in the future, AR and VR technology will likely be combined into a single, stylish device that allows users to switch between the two seamlessly.

AR smart glasses will offer a wide range of apps, such as cameras, social media, music, texting, newsfeeds, online shopping, audio and visual streaming, recording, and phone calls. These features will be enabled by self-contained wireless connectivity. However, video calls may prove challenging due to the device’s proximity to the user’s face.

These glasses will act as wearable minicomputers, with speakers or earbuds for audio. As we become more familiar with the technology, we will naturally adapt to using voice commands, eye-tracking, and touch controls for navigating our daily lives.

AI Buddy Bot

I like to think of this pair of smart glasses that we talk back and forth to as our AI Buddy Bot. The Buddy Bots will be combined with Assessment Bots, Coach Bots, and Teacher Bots to help our next-generation education system take shape.

The Buddy Bot, which uses a conversational interface, will interact with each person in a friendly manner and respond appropriately to different types of exchanges, whether they are positive or negative.

Over time, the Buddy Bot will become our personal companion, our confidant to share our hopes and dreams, our therapist, cheerleader, protector of our privacy, and conversational coach, able to complete our sentences before we do. The AI Buddy-Bot will get to know us intimately, from our flaws to our successes. It will become the friend we always wish we had, a source of new ideas and possibilities, and our single most valuable possession.

Adding More Bots

Assessment bots will be used to test and assess students’ understanding of the material. They will provide instant feedback on performance and offer suggestions for improvement.

Coach bots will act as guides and coaches, providing personalized support such as helping students develop a study plan or providing strategies for staying motivated.

Teacher bots will line up an ongoing series of learning experiences for students ranging from traditional to online courses and everything in between. These teacher bots will use students’ learning styles and preferences, as well as their digital twin data, to recommend the most appropriate resources. They will be able to adjust the learning experience based on progress and provide new materials as needed.

The education system will no longer be limited by time and location, allowing for learning to take place outside of traditional school hours and in various non-traditional ways.

It’s important to note that while AI-based learning is set to revolutionize education, it will also pose challenges. As AI teachers improve rapidly, we may see unrealistic high expectations for their capabilities, and it may be difficult to distinguish the value added by AI teachers from that of human teachers. It’s crucial that we invest in rigorous research and development to realize the full potential of AI in education.

I firmly believe that education is still the biggest opportunity in the online world that no one has quite cracked the code for yet.

COVID, politics, and Covid-politics spurred divisions and antagonisms between people and certain institutions, including K-12 education. As a result, education in the future will be different and likely more complex as we exit these tumultuous times into a new normal.

Over the past few years, K-12 education systems have been front and center in several ways, and not for the better. Children were forced to learn from home, some would say, for far too long, since for many youngsters, that meant no learning at all. Many less-motivated kids will never recover from this 1+ year gap in in-person learning.

Over the same period, elements of the K-12 curriculum also came to light, in most cases because parents were looking over the shoulders of their learn-from-home kids. Curricula related to sexual orientation and re-interpretations of history seemed to rise to the top. “Wokeness” issues, usually the province of higher ed, made their way into the K-12 sphere during this period.

In response, parents started protesting at school board meetings, voting in entire new boards, and often pulling their kids out of school completely.

There’s no doubt in my mind that our news media tends to blow these and other kinds of issues out of proportion and elevate isolated or limited incidents to the status of trends. In the long run, parents abandoning the public school system has become a significant trend and one we’ll continue to monitor.

Parental activism has died down somewhat, but the disenrollment numbers are considerable. Private, charter and at-home schooling are now more popular education options than ever. And to make matters worse, our public school systems were already facing decreasing enrollments due to declining birth rates and slowing immigration.

Altogether, the situation is exacerbated by a host of new cultural forces to the point where this will be considered the turning point for education, as the long-term viability of public education is further scrutinized.

The Declining Numbers

The Department of Education reported a decline of 1.6 million students in public schools and public charter schools between the fall of 2019 and the fall of 2020.

There was a partial bounce back after that. An Education Next survey found that these declines in enrollment partially reversed in 2021, but the percentage of students in district schools compared to the alternatives still remains several percentage points below 2019/2020 levels.

The proportion of students receiving private, charter, and homeschool education have all increased since 2020. The share for private schools increased from 8% to 10%; for charter schools, it expanded from 5% to 7%; for homeschool, the share edged up from 6% to 7%.

Again, it’s not a tsunami but a significant trend. And it’s a trend that parents, local governments, and policymakers need to plan for. They’d better think differently as they look to reshape the future of public education.

Interestingly, according to some sources, support for school choice in general, including charter schools and vouchers for private education, declined during 2020 and then rose as the pandemic receded. This perhaps was an indication that the underlying threat to public schools extends beyond Covid to longer-term concerns related to academic rigor and curriculum.

To survive, though, public school systems will need to take on some of the characteristics of alternative schools and even merge elements of those institutions into their own. We see this already happening, for example, with public charter schools that focus on STEM or foreign language immersion.

The opposite will also be true, and the private education alternative institutions will embrace some of the programs taught in private schools. They’ll purchase, for example, certain intellectual property of public schools, such as a teaching guide, a semester curriculum, or even access to specific classes. Similarly, home-schooled students have the option to dial into a public-school STEM class for a fee, or their parents will purchase STEM course workbooks or semester lesson plans.

Some religious private schools may want to maintain their own teachers and coursework for humanities, literature, and even some of the sciences, but they may choose to work with a local public school for access to a particular algebra teacher (either online or in-person) specifically for an 8th or 9th-grade math class, as talented teachers become increasingly hard to find.

Larger private schools will maintain many of their own extracurricular programs, from band to sports to drama, but smaller private and charter schools, as well as home school parents, will have the opportunity to sign their students up for these opportunities at nearby public schools – again, for an agreed upon fee.

An Issue of Fairness

Many readers will undoubtedly point out that taxpayers publicly finance public schools – and that includes the parents who choose to purchase an alternative education experience in the form of private schools, charter schools, or home schools. Should they have to pay to access these public school programs that would have been free to them if their children went to those schools?

The road to capitalist public education will need to cross those bridges, and local policymakers and voters will decide what’s fair and what’s not. But if public schools price their services to these alternative schools and families fairly, based on true incremental costs, it shouldn’t be a major issue.

We’re less a society of one-size-fits-all than ever before. We’re now far less inclined to accept the status quo. Our K-12 education system will reflect that in the future as schools develop more options than ever for parents who want to mix and match the ideal combination of educational systems, courses, and activities for their kids. Public schools will need to keep up if they are to survive.

Moving Forward

Over the coming weeks, I’ll dive into a number of scenarios that I feel will begin to redefine education completely.

We’re entering a world that will require higher caliber people to make it work, and it is preposterous for us to think our existing systems can suddenly start producing better results.

Each of us has only one body, one mind, and one life, and whatever we do to increase our skills and capabilities will make each of us more valuable on the world stage.

With the help of AI, people in the future will view themselves as being in a constant state of improvement. This means that over the coming decades, we will become exponentially more fixable – trainable, repairable, improvable, and even reinventable.

It will no longer be about who we are today but who we have the potential to become. And tomorrow’s AI engineers will take on one of the world’s most important missions, which is to make that happen.

As a Futurist, it’s easy to get caught up in the technology trends and breakthroughs that will mark our future lives – the amazing advances in devices and concepts, from flying taxis to cryptocurrency.

But life is more than code, supercomputers, and the sciences. Healthy and advancing societies must integrate creativity into the mainstream in two fundamental areas: the creative arts and in support of the digital working world.

Keep in mind, the same technology that is automating jobs out of existence is the same technology that will be creating entirely new business and industry.

Since AI doesn’t have the ability to invent something that currently doesn’t exist, we need to focus on our uniquely human strengths, and that’s where creativity comes into play.

Creative Arts

Creative arts can define and unify a culture. Throughout history, the creative arts have brought people together both physically and emotionally. Art, and the creativity behind it, is a unifying force. That’s why oppressive regimes over the course of history often seek to destroy a community’s revered artistic objects when they try to impose their will and authority.

Creative arts can inform and inspire technology. Before most technological breakthroughs occur, there’s usually a necessary phase of imagination and artistic creativity. For example, I have to think that today’s engineers who are deeply immersed in flying car technology were inspired earlier in their lives by artistic renderings of these vehicles.

And on an even more pragmatic front, the creative arts contribute to the economy. The “cultural and creative industries” (CCI) portion of the world economy is poised to rebound after being decimated by pandemic-induced closures. That’s a good thing for a lot of reasons, including economic. The CCI sector is responsible for nearly 30 million jobs worldwide and it’s the most important employer for young people between the ages of 15 and 29 compared to any other sector.

Creativity in the Larger Work Environment

Not all of us are artists, but outside of the CCI, there will also be a need for creativity and a creative mindset in most industries and business sectors.

Our focus on technology and our dependence on it may be making our workforce and many jobs less creative. Fortunately, employers seem to be trying to resist this trend, often defining relatively straightforward jobs as “creative.” They understand that employees, probably for reasons of job security and self-esteem, don’t want to invest their time and effort in jobs in which it seems they can easily be replaced by technology.

Additionally, employers value the differentiating edge that human creative skills can contribute to design, service levels, and branding, even in the process of conducting digital tasks and the production of basic products.

As the former Chairman of Sony pointed out recently, “We assume that all products of our competitors have basically the same technology, price, performance, and features. Design is the only thing that differentiates one product from another …” Creativity.

The Future is Bright for Creative Skills

With that in mind, how will the definition and nature of creativity evolve as we move into the future? How will it be different even 5-10 years from now than it is today?

As noted above, employers will continue to emphasize the creative aspects of the digital-empowered jobs they post. They will encourage employees to bring creative new approaches to their jobs in order to maintain an engaged workforce and in the hopes of delivering differentiation to their competitive products and services.

Additionally, the more digitized the working environment becomes, the more important it will be to combine – some would say temper – objective calculation and machine-informed projections with human intuition and insight. Computers aren’t visionaries. They lack imagination and emotion.

As long as we have problems, we will always have jobs! And there is no shortage of problems! And as long as work teams and our world itself are made up of human beings, this type of managing, planning, and problem-solving will require the creative human touch.

Implications for our Educational System

In many ways, technology has made us less dependent on gaining knowledge. For example, we don’t need to learn geography, rules of grammar, or math skills, thanks to apps and features in apps. These advances have been a source of equalization among mankind – a very positive trend.

Since to a large extent, knowledge is no longer just for the privileged but for everyone, and can be stored in devices and not our brains, our education system will need to shift from knowledge-based training (how to do something), to the more creative side of work (when to do it or not, why to do it, and ways to do it even better).

Unfortunately, that necessity is at odds with our current education system. In fact, some experts claim the education system is actually “killing creativity” … at a time we need it the most.

Knowledge is merely the starting point of creativity; but unfortunately, it seems to be the endpoint of our education system. Instead, the future of education instruction should encompass creative explorations of “How can we apply this knowledge?” and “What areas of technology can we apply in order to create solutions to this challenge?”

The Need to Teach Creativity

From the earliest grades through graduate school, creativity should not simply be tolerated or encouraged, it should be taught along with related key skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration.

Creativity doesn’t always come naturally. Some students inherently have more of a knack for it than others, just as some students are math whizzes beginning in first grade.

There’s no arguing that technology like AI, robotics, drones, and ever-faster computers will continue to displace tasks, lessen the workload, and force businesses to rework virtually every conceivable job. But rather than merely responding piece-meal with specialized training programs when this happens, it’s time to go back to the fundamentals and add a fourth “R” to our basic education curriculum. In addition to “readin’, writin’, and rithmetic,” we’ll need to teach and promote “resourcefulness.”
