To be honest, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the answers. No, it was not able to fully answer the questions, but quite often, having someone elaborate on the issues surrounding the question is quite helpful.

From my perspective, ChatGPT is a great tool for creating a starting point. Any writer that starts with GPT’s initial draft will be able to produce a far better document in the end.

For more than 50 years, scientists, philosophers, and mathematicians have been exploring and perfecting advances in artificial intelligence (AI) while the average person was in the dark about the details and actual capabilities during this time. It wasn’t until IBM’s Deep Blue computer defeated world chess champion Garry Kasparov in 1997 that we could begin to relate to this incredible new branch of science.

The next generation experienced a similar moment 18 years later when IBM’s Watson defeated two Jeopardy champions.

And now, a decade further still, AI is all around us.

Most of us can’t even distinguish applications of AI from “normal” life. AI powers our social media and news feeds. It’s given us speech and biometric recognition along with verbal computer communication. Language-based interfaces answer our questions and give us directions to where we’re going.

Simply put, but amazing to consider, AI simulates and mimics human thought processes and actions to perform tasks, forming conclusions in a way that a human might.

So when it comes to machines that think and act like a person … what could go wrong with that?

We naturally don’t trust things we don’t understand. And if we can’t understand things like AI fully, we want to be sure that someone we trust is watching out for our best interests. We don’t have that kind of oversight at the moment, but we’re quickly going to need it.

Bad Data and Bad Actors

Why do we need AI regulation?

Many ethical issues arising from AI are due to poorly formed or inadequate inputs such as the data and the basis of knowledge the AI program is provided to work with. Bad data gives bad results, and biased data, that doesn’t actually reflect a real-world situation, will trigger biased machine learning and, therefore, flawed results. Policies or actions based on those results move us backwards, not forwards.

There are also occasions for humans to use AI technology in a more nefarious, possibly criminal way. AI can be used to manipulate, trick, and distort, but one person’s manipulation may also be another person’s “persuasion.” And pre-judging – in targeted advertising, for example – isn’t too different from “customizing.” It’s all a matter of degrees and intent. We know inappropriate AI-driven activity when we see it, but bright lines are often hard to define.

Underlying Standards for AI Ethics

Responsible AI that safely serves humankind (and not just the manipulators, tricksters, and distorters) will need to:

Explainability

Be based on standards of transparency and “explainability,” meaning a common understanding of the input, processing, and output of the AI function. This entails having common, agreed-upon language and definitions as well as measures of success and error. It means there are no black boxes with results or processes that can’t be rationally explained.

Standards

Be based on standards that weigh both the benefits and the risks of AI. This requires stepping back within the research and design phase to consider the harm or downsides that might occur due to missteps in the development of the system or exploitation of the system when it’s released. At the development stage, there’s a tendency to over-promote the positives and downplay concerns, a tendency known as “ethics washing.” Equally concerning is the inclination to ignore the downsides of AI “for now,” while offering assurances that these issues will be addressed as they arise.

Safeguards

Maintain guardrails, safety standards, and protocols to govern high-risk functions of AI, such as voice and facial recognition or social bots. The AI behind deepfakes is a prime example, this amazing technology can be used for legitimate reasons such as movie special effects. Or it can be used for nefarious purposes to misinform, deceive, misrepresent, and much worse. Bots are another example. Appropriately used as digital assistants or as web crawlers to sort and rank information, social bots, on the other hand, can be intentionally used to distort online discussions and spread falsehoods.

Human-in-the-Loop

Ensure there’s always a human in the loop to train, tune, and test AI algorithms to ensure those first three criteria are met. In other words, AI should not be completely overseeing AI development.

Using these standards as guiding posts, AI regulation will need to quickly get into the weeds. We shouldn’t try to create broad enforceable standards that try to address every conceivable application. Instead, we should focus on use cases regarding specific tools, such as facial recognition and business sectors, such as the use of AI in banking or national defense.

Creating an AI Police Force

Who is it that should put these policies in place and enforce them? This is a huge question with no easy answers.

We can’t completely count on legislative bodies to codify and regulate these standards. Policymaking is slow, subject to special interest manipulation, and, yes, even political. These government bodies always seem to address last-generation challenges even as iterative new problems replace the old ones.

Plus, the standards need to be global, which is an even more challenging policy arena. Governments at every level have a measure of independence from industry, which is important to foster trust but makes them less attuned to the urgencies of today.

To be certain, government bodies haven’t exactly been on the sidelines. Nations (e.g., the U.S. and China) and blocs of nations (e.g., the EU) have issued frameworks for oversight and regulation of AI. It’s at least a start.

More likely the policies will be set by regulation, with knowledgeable input from industry tempered by informed regulatory staff who can put that input into context.

As this evolves, though, we’ll need to put the onus on tech companies themselves to establish internal standards and work collectively to develop industry-wide standards. These can serve as points of information and even boundary lines for establishing regulations.

What Else Needs to Happen?

To be certain, I’m a big fan of AI. Our future will be driven by AI technology that can discern, understand, learn, and act far quicker and more reliably than we can. It will give us additional capabilities and we’ll all be better for it.

But in order to enhance trust and in order to keep AI in its proper place, in addition to regulatory safeguards, all of us will need to recognize AI for what it is and what it isn’t. AI involves machine learning and other processes that might be flawed if that learning comes from the processing of incomplete or biased data.

Ninety-nine times out of 100 your map application will get you to your destination. But don’t bet your life on it because there will still be times when it sends you to a dead-end or a road closure. AI programs might be able to predict an election outcome with a level of certainty, but they may still have their own “Dewey Defeats Truman” moments, perhaps because in those political contexts it relies on polling data from people who increasingly hate to be polled.

We’ll also need to develop our own levels of healthy skepticism – to not always believe what we see and read in social media, for example. That will be a major challenge as more and more curated content is AI-distributed, and bot-driven, in a way that reinforces our predilections, to begin with.

For better and worse, AI mimics human thought processes. The cycle of incomplete data inputs, leading to faulty learning, resulting in bad decisions is true with humans as well.

We aspire to live in a world far better than what we have today, and AI is a key piece of the equation for getting us there.

How do we evaluate and communicate the evolving capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI)? One way to do it is by describing how closely AI matches up with “real” human intelligence.

We can’t seem to get enough of creating “head-to-head” human matchups with AI in games. Pitting our human champions against AI makes for great headlines and human-interest stories because it illustrates the capabilities of AI in ways that most people can easily relate to.

In the last 75 years, we’ve had some memorable moments where computers with increasingly sophisticated AI prevailed in some very complex games, humbling world champions in the process.

1. Tic-Tac-Toe, 1952

In his Ph.D. dissertation on Human-Computer Interaction, University of Cambridge doctoral candidate A.S. Douglas programmed a room-sized EMPSAC computer mainframe to flawlessly compete in the game of “Noughts and Crosses.” There’s no record of the name of its first human “victim,” but whoever it was, they had to enter their move using digital telephonic technology.

2. Backgammon, 1979

A world-class chess player and AI/computer science instructor at Carnegie Mellon University, Hans Berliner was focused on developing an AI chess program. As an interim step, though, he devised BKG 9.8, a backgammon program that defeated Luigi Villa, the world champion, by a score of 7-1.

This was the first time a computer defeated a world champion in any gaming competition. Two years later, Berliner predicted that a chess AI program would defeat the world chess champion by 1990. He was off by just seven years.

3. Checkers, 1994

Marion Tinsley was a Ph.D. mathematician and university math professor at Florida A&M and Florida State … as well as the former Checkers world champion. In 1992, he initially defeated Chinook, a checkers AI program devised by researchers at Alberta University in Canada.

Two years later, they matched up again, but Dr. Tinsley withdrew after several games for health reasons. He was diagnosed with cancer shortly thereafter. Given those circumstances, it’s a bit callous to call this a loss but regardless, Chinook continued to improve from that point on. It ultimately was perfected, meaning that as long as the human player made no mistakes, every match would end in a draw.

4. Chess, 1997

For many of us, chess was long considered the epitome of gaming intellect and strategy. International championships were covered by mainstream media. World champs like Boris Spassky, Anatoly Karpov, and Bobby Fischer were household names.

Computer scientists, including Hans Berliner of backgammon programming fame, had worked on chess-playing computer programs since the 1950s. In 1989, IBM assembled an all-star team to develop its AI chess program, known as Deep Blue. In its first matchup with the world champion in 1996, Garry Kasparov prevailed. But in their second match a year later, Deep Blue came out on top in their six-game match 2-1 with three draws.

5. Scrabble, 2007

In 2007, the AI Scrabble program, Quackle, defeated former Scrabble World champion, David Boys. To qualify to play Boys, Quackle had to defeat another AI Scrabble program, Maven. At the time, and subsequently, Quackle was used by the media during world-class Scrabble tournaments to describe possible plays confronting the competitors.

6. Jeopardy, 2011

Two of Jeopardy’s most successful contestants to date, Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter, agreed to play a three-game exhibition match against IBM’s Watson – a room-sized computer housed in another location due to its noisy operations and need for a cool environment. The humans had their moments, but in the end, Watson was victorious in spite of the fact that Jeopardy “answers” are known for their subtlety and wordplay.

7. Go, 2016

While its rules are simple, the Chinese game of Go is extremely complex. It’s said that the number of possible moves in a game is greater than the number of atoms in the universe. Contributing to the complexity is the fact that as a Go game progresses, the number of stones and possible moves on the board increases rather than decreases, as in the case of board games like checkers, chess, Scrabble, and others. In spite of these hurdles, in 2016, DeepMind, a UK company purchased by Google two years earlier, defeated Go world champion Lee Sodol in a five-game match.

8. Texas Hold ‘Em, 2017

One year later, the Libratus AI system took on four of the world’s top poker players over a three-week period in “Heads-Up No-Limit Texas Hold ‘Em” … and beat them soundly. Developed by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University, Libratus represented a major step forward in AI learning in an environment of imperfect-information game solving and which requires players to take a long-term strategy vs. seizing on short-term wins and losses.

Why do It?

AI is proving its capabilities more and more each year in the sciences, military, transportation, and business functions like Human Resources and e-commerce. One would think we’ve gone beyond the day when we ask AI to “prove” itself to us by beating us in board or computer games.

However, these exhibitions serve an important purpose. They define the capabilities, and hint at the possible perils of machine thinking and AI decision-making in ways the average person can relate to.

Knowing that AI is powering stock picks and selecting job candidates might be uninspiring to many. But when Ken Jennings, tongue-in-cheek, appends the comment, “I, for one, welcome our new computer overlords” to his Final Jeopardy answer during the Watson exhibition; it put AI into a relatable context for us all.

Beyond Games

That’s why AI developers will and should continue to conduct these kinds of real-life demonstrations. I wrote last year about a recent demonstration of the human-like capabilities of the GPT-3 language prediction tool. This AI program made headlines by drafting essays that read and sounded almost human-like.

But as we said at the time, AI has a long way to go. GPT-3 requires inputs and prompts. It’s a language predictor that determines, usually correctly, the thought or statement that should logically come next given what it’s presented with.

And like all AI, GPT-3 is an example of GOFAI, “good old-fashioned artificial intelligence.” We haven’t progressed much beyond these systems that are based on programmed learning and representational information about the world, rather than intelligently perceived information – wisdom that’s accumulated just like the human brain would gather and process it.

In that sense, AI will still remain artificial until it can defeat a human being in the Game of Life – and I don’t mean the Hasbro version!
