As AI frees up our hours and our population grows older, the world is heading toward a surplus of free time and a shortage of meaningful ways to fill it.

By Futurist Thomas Frey

In 1930, the economist John Maynard Keynes predicted that his grandchildren’s generation would work about 15 hours a week. He worried that humanity’s biggest challenge wouldn’t be survival, but figuring out what to do with all that free time.

He was wrong about the timing. But I think he may have been right about the problem.

We’re entering an era where technology, demographics, and changing work patterns are all converging on one outcome: people will have more free hours than ever before. And our current menu of entertainment isn’t even close to ready for it.

Where Our Free Time Goes Today

Let’s start with how Americans spend their leisure time right now. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average person age 15 and over spent 5.2 hours a day on leisure and sports in 2025, and watching TV took up 2.6 of those hours, roughly half.

Here’s the troubling part. The same survey found that the share of people who socialized or communicated on an average day dropped from 38% in 2015 to 30% in 2025. Over that same decade, time spent playing games or using a computer for leisure rose from 25 to 37 minutes a day.

In other words, we already have hours to fill, and we’re filling more of them alone, in front of screens. That’s the starting point. Now let’s look at what’s about to change.

The future of entertainment won’t just tell you stories. It will turn your life, family, and memories into adventures no one else can experience.

1.) Force One: The Work Week Is Shrinking

The idea of a shorter work week used to sound like a fantasy. Not anymore.

In 2022, the United Kingdom ran the largest four-day work week trial to date, involving about 2,900 workers at 61 companies. When it ended, 56 of those companies said they’d continue the shorter week, and 18 planned to make it permanent. Revenue didn’t collapse. It actually rose an average of 1.4% among the companies that shared data.

Now add AI to the mix. As software takes over routine tasks, many companies will discover they can get the same output in fewer hours. Some workers will lose jobs, some will work less, and many will find themselves with a third day off every week. That’s 52 extra days a year, per person, that need to be filled with something.

2.) Force Two: A Nation of Retirees

The second force is demographic. The U.S. Census Bureau has projected that by 2034, Americans 65 and older will number 77 million, edging out the 76.5 million children under 18. It will be the first time in the nation’s history that older people outnumber kids.

Older Americans are the heaviest users of leisure time. Adults 75 and older spent 7.4 hours a day on leisure and sports activities in 2025, more than any other age group.

Think about what that means. We’re about to have the largest, healthiest, longest-living retired population in history, with more free time than any generation before them. Many will live 20 or 30 years past retirement. Daytime television and crossword puzzles won’t be enough to fill three decades.

We have more entertainment at our fingertips than any generation before us, yet our growing screen time may be stealing something priceless: human connection.

3.) Force Three: AI Is Flooding Us With Content

The third force is a paradox. AI is about to make content almost infinitely abundant. Movies, music, games, stories, and videos can increasingly be generated on demand, tailored to individual tastes, at nearly zero cost.

You might think that solves the entertainment problem. It doesn’t. When something becomes infinite, it also becomes less valuable. A world drowning in AI-generated shows will create a hunger for things that can’t be mass-produced, like shared experiences, live moments, real human connection, and a sense that what we’re doing actually matters.

Abundance of content is not the same as abundance of meaning.

4.) Force Four: The Loneliness Problem

Put those trends together, more free time, an older population, and endless solo screen entertainment, and you get a recipe for isolation.

Much of today’s entertainment was designed to capture attention, not to build community. It keeps us watching, but it doesn’t help us belong. The future will need entertainment that pulls people together instead of pushing them further apart.

Tomorrow’s audiences won’t just watch the story unfold. They’ll step inside, become the characters, and discover that every choice rewrites the ending.

What the New Entertainment Will Look Like

So what fills the gap? Here are the categories I expect to explode over the coming decades.

1.) Participatory Entertainment

Audiences will want to be inside the story, not just watching it. Think immersive theater, interactive mysteries spread across a whole city, and AI-powered games where your choices genuinely change the outcome. The audience becomes the cast.

2.) Social Entertainment

Entertainment designed specifically to bring people together will become big business. Picture neighborhood game leagues, multi-generational adventure clubs, and virtual reality spaces where grandparents and grandchildren explore ancient Rome together from different states.

3.) Purpose-Driven Play

Many people with extra time will crave meaning as much as fun. That opens the door to entertainment blended with purpose. Examples include citizen science games where players help researchers classify galaxies or track wildlife, community challenges that restore local parks, and competitions that reward learning a new skill.

4.) Physical Entertainment for Aging Bodies

As the population ages, there will be huge demand for activities that keep bodies and minds active. Expect a wave of senior-friendly sports, dance-based fitness games, walking adventures with augmented reality storytelling, and brain-training experiences that feel more like play than therapy.

5.) The Live Human Premium

In a world full of AI performers, a real human on a real stage will become more precious, not less. Live music, comedy, storytelling, and sports will command a premium precisely because they’re unrepeatable and imperfect.

6.) Hyper-Personal Adventures

AI will also make it possible to create one-of-a-kind experiences, like a mystery written around your hometown, a fantasy adventure featuring your family, or a travel experience designed around your personal history. Entertainment will shift from mass-market to market-of-one.

The future of aging may look less like physical therapy and more like playtime, where every adventure strengthens bodies, sharpens minds, and restores joy.

The Business Opportunity

For entrepreneurs, this is one of the most underappreciated opportunities of the coming decades. Every hour freed up by AI and shorter work weeks is an hour someone will spend somewhere. Cities, companies, and creators who design the new forms of play, connection, and purpose will be tapping into a market measured in billions of hours.

It also creates jobs. Game designers, experience architects, community organizers, live performers, and immersive storytellers will be in high demand, and many of those roles will be ones AI can support but not fully replace.

Final Thoughts

For most of human history, the challenge was finding enough time to rest. In the decades ahead, the challenge will be finding enough meaningful ways to use the time we have.

Keynes saw it coming nearly a century ago. He understood that once machines lifted the burden of work, humanity would face a new question: how do we live well?

Entertainment will be a big part of the answer. Not the passive, isolating kind that fills hours without filling lives, but new forms that bring people together, keep them active, and give them a reason to get up in the morning.

The future won’t just need more entertainment. It will need better entertainment. And whoever builds it will be shaping how billions of people spend the most valuable resource they have left: their time.
