I wrote my first column on the future of libraries in 2004, a time when many people were predicting libraries were going away. Digital books were emerging, the internet was becoming ubiquitous, and tech pundits were declaring physical libraries obsolete. Twenty-one years later, libraries are still going strong.

In fact, they’re thriving in ways those early digital prophets never anticipated. American Library Association data shows that public library visits have rebounded to pre-pandemic levels, with over 1.3 billion visits annually across the United States. Even more telling, 95% of libraries now offer formal or informal digital literacy training, positioning themselves as essential bridges in our increasingly digital world. Libraries will still be going strong in 2035, but they will have vastly different capabilities and uses than anything we can imagine today.

The Great Reinvention

The library of 2035 will be unrecognizable to someone transported from 2004. While books will still exist – and remain surprisingly popular – they’ll represent just one facet of institutions that have evolved into comprehensive community intelligence centers. Think of them as the physical manifestation of humanity’s collective knowledge, augmented by artificial intelligence and accessible through technologies that blur the line between digital and physical reality.

The transformation is already underway. Today, 63% of library professionals identify 24/7 access to materials as the most important feature they want to implement. This isn’t just about extending hours – it’s about fundamentally reimagining how communities interact with information and resources around the clock. By 2035, libraries will operate as always-on community neural networks, processing and distributing knowledge, skills, and resources with unprecedented efficiency.

AI: The Ultimate Librarian

Artificial intelligence will revolutionize libraries in ways that make today’s search engines look primitive. Imagine walking into a library where an AI system has already analyzed your research history, current projects, and learning style to curate a personalized knowledge pathway. This isn’t science fiction – it’s the logical evolution of systems already being tested today.

These AI librarians won’t replace human librarians; they’ll amplify their capabilities exponentially. While AI handles routine inquiries and resource recommendations, human librarians will focus on complex problem-solving, community building, and helping people navigate the ethical implications of our AI-saturated world. The partnership between human intuition and machine processing will create research experiences that are both deeply personal and incredibly powerful.

Libraries will become centers for AI literacy – a skill that will be as fundamental in 2035 as reading is today. Current research shows that libraries are already making AI literacy a primary focus of professional development efforts. By 2035, every library will offer comprehensive programs teaching people how to work with AI systems, recognize AI-generated content, and understand the implications of algorithmic decision-making in their lives.

The sophistication of these AI systems will be staggering. They’ll analyze speech patterns to detect when someone is struggling with a concept and automatically adjust explanations. They’ll recognize when a student is researching a sensitive topic and provide appropriate resources and support. They’ll even predict community information needs based on local trends and global events, pre-positioning resources and expertise where they’ll be needed most.

Extended Reality: Beyond the Physical

Virtual and augmented reality will transform libraries into portals to infinite worlds. Already, pioneering libraries are experimenting with VR headsets that transport learners to historical epochs, offering first-hand encounters with ancient Rome or bustling medieval marketplaces. By 2035, this will be standard equipment in every library system.

Imagine studying the Civil War by walking through Gettysburg as the battle unfolds around you. Picture learning marine biology by swimming through a coral reef, observing ecosystems that exist thousands of miles away or no longer exist at all. These aren’t distant dreams – they’re inevitable realities based on technology trajectories that are accelerating every year.

AR will enhance physical collections in ways that seem magical today. Hover your smart glasses over a historical artifact, and detailed 3D models, multimedia archives, and contextual information will appear in your field of vision. Ancient pottery will come alive with animations showing how it was made. Historical documents will display translations, background information, and connections to related materials automatically.
The implications go far beyond entertainment or education. Libraries will become training centers for jobs that don’t exist yet, using VR to simulate work environments and scenarios. They’ll help people overcome phobias, practice social interactions, and explore career possibilities in completely safe virtual environments.

Blockchain: The Trust Layer

Blockchain technology will solve problems libraries have wrestled with for decades while creating entirely new possibilities. By 2035, every library will issue verifiable digital credentials that can’t be faked, altered, or lost. Complete a course, master a skill, or contribute to a community project, and you’ll receive a blockchain-verified credential that will be recognized globally.

This isn’t just about certificates and badges. Libraries will use blockchain to create secure, permanent archives of community knowledge. Local history, government proceedings, environmental data, and cultural expressions will be preserved in tamper-proof digital formats that will last for generations. When a small town’s newspaper closes or a community organization disbands, their knowledge and history won’t disappear – it will live on in the blockchain.

The technology will also revolutionize resource sharing between libraries. Imagine a global network where any library patron can access specialized materials from any library worldwide, with blockchain ensuring proper attribution, usage tracking, and compensation. Rare books, specialized databases, and unique collections will become globally accessible while maintaining proper security and provenance.

By 2035, libraries will function as 24/7 community hubs, with smart locker networks bringing books, tools, and tech to everyday places like grocery stores, transit stations, and co-working spaces.

The Always-Open Library

Perhaps the most profound change will be the concept of libraries as 24/7 community resources. Smart locker networks will extend library access to grocery stores, transit stations, and community centers. Pick up a book on your way to work, and return it while shopping for groceries. The library will come to you, rather than requiring you to come to it.

These aren’t simple book lockers. They’ll house tablets, laptops, mobile hotspots, maker tools, musical instruments, and whatever else the community needs. Sixty percent of library professionals already rank multiple locker sizes as important for holding various items beyond books. By 2035, the “Library of Things” will be a comprehensive community resource sharing network that makes expensive tools and equipment accessible to everyone.

Remote work and digital nomadism will accelerate this trend. Libraries will operate satellite locations in unexpected places – airports, shopping malls, co-working spaces, even people’s homes. The physical library building will become the flagship of a distributed network that serves the entire community wherever they are.

Community Intelligence Centers

Libraries will evolve into something unprecedented in human history: community intelligence centers that combine the functions of libraries, schools, innovation labs, social services, and civic engagement platforms. They’ll be the places where artificial intelligence meets human wisdom, where global knowledge connects with local needs.

These centers will host everything from traditional book clubs to blockchain workshops. They’ll offer services ranging from 3D printing to meditation classes. They’ll provide access to technologies like brain-computer interfaces and quantum computers that individuals could never afford on their own. Most importantly, they’ll serve as neutral spaces where communities can come together to solve problems, share knowledge, and build social cohesion in an increasingly fragmented world.

The data is already pointing in this direction. Modern libraries are expanding their role as innovation hubs by creating makerspaces equipped with 3D printers, laser cutters, and VR equipment. By 2035, these spaces will house technologies we can barely imagine today – perhaps including early versions of molecular assemblers, neural interface devices, and quantum simulation systems.

The Human Element Amplified

Technology will amplify rather than replace the human elements that make libraries special. Librarians will become community learning architects, designing experiences that help people navigate an increasingly complex world. They’ll be part teacher, part therapist, part technology guide, and part community organizer.

The role will require new skills and perspectives. Librarians of 2035 will need to understand AI systems, virtual reality design, blockchain protocols, and neurodiversity accommodation. They’ll also need deeper skills in conflict resolution, mental health support, and community organizing as libraries become central to addressing social challenges.

But the core mission remains unchanged: democratizing access to information, knowledge, and opportunity. Libraries have always been about equity – ensuring that everyone, regardless of economic status, has access to the tools they need to learn, grow, and contribute to society. In 2035, when those tools include advanced AI, immersive virtual environments, and blockchain-verified credentials, libraries will be more important for social equity than ever before.

In the library of 2035, brain-computer interfaces and AI will tailor lighting, sound, and environment to each patron’s cognitive needs, creating truly personalized learning spaces.

Neuroadaptive Learning Environments

One of the most exciting developments will be libraries that adapt to how our brains actually work. Early brain-computer interface technology will allow library spaces to optimize learning experiences based on cognitive load and attention patterns. Struggling with a difficult concept? The library’s AI will detect your stress levels and automatically adjust lighting, temperature, and background sounds to optimize your learning environment.

These systems will be particularly transformative for neurodivergent learners. Spaces will automatically adjust to individual neurological needs – dimming lights for someone with sensory sensitivity, providing fidget tools for someone with ADHD, or creating quiet spaces for someone on the autism spectrum. The library of 2035 will truly serve everyone, regardless of how their brain is wired.

The Global Knowledge Commons

Perhaps most excitingly, libraries will become nodes in a global knowledge commons that makes humanity’s entire accumulated wisdom accessible to everyone. Language barriers will disappear through real-time translation. Geographic barriers will vanish through virtual reality. Economic barriers will crumble through the democratization of expensive technologies and resources.

A child in rural Kansas will have the same access to MIT’s laboratories, the Louvre’s collections, and the Library of Congress’s archives as someone living next door to these institutions. This isn’t just about information access – it’s about opportunity access. When anyone can learn from the world’s best teachers, access the most advanced tools, and collaborate with people globally, we’ll see an explosion of human potential that’s impossible to predict.

The library of 2035 will blend advanced technology with human wisdom, serving as both a global network and a local gathering place.

Final Thoughts: The Unstoppable Institution

Libraries survived the printing press, radio, television, and the internet by continuously evolving to serve their communities’ changing needs. They’ll not only survive the AI revolution – they’ll be at its center, helping humanity navigate the most profound technological transformation in history.

The library of 2035 will be simultaneously more technological and more human than today’s libraries. More connected to global networks, yet more rooted in local communities. More virtual, yet more essential as physical gathering spaces. More automated, yet more dependent on human wisdom and judgment.

Those who predicted libraries would disappear fundamentally misunderstood what libraries really are. They’re not buildings that house books – they’re institutions that connect people with the knowledge, tools, and community they need to thrive. As long as humans need to learn, create, and connect with each other, we’ll need libraries.

The only question is whether we’ll have the vision and investment necessary to build the libraries our communities deserve. The future is arriving faster than most people realize, and communities that embrace these changes early will have tremendous advantages in education, innovation, and social cohesion.

Get ready. The library revolution is just beginning.

From shopping and dating to education and travel, the possibilities are endless. But what does this mean for how we live, work, and play? Let’s take a closer look at some scenarios to see how AI and other technologies will shape our future.

Scenario 1 – Fred and Jessica Applying for a Home Mortgage in 2040

In 2040, Fred and Jessica were exploring the possibilities of applying for a home mortgage using both crypto and traditional currencies. They had been researching the benefits of using cryptocurrencies for mortgage payments and were excited to explore the options available to them.

Using advanced digital tools, Fred and Jessica were able to compare mortgage rates and terms offered by lenders that accepted crypto payments, as well as traditional lenders that only accepted fiat currencies.

They found that some crypto-friendly lenders offered lower interest rates and more flexible repayment schedules than traditional lenders while also allowing them to make payments in popular cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin.

After exploring their options, Fred and Jessica decided to apply for a mortgage using both crypto and traditional currencies. They submitted their application online and were pleased to find that the process was fast and efficient, thanks to the use of advanced digital tools and AI-powered assistants.

Their application was quickly approved, and they received a personalized mortgage offer that allowed them to make payments using either crypto or traditional currencies. They were able to review the terms and conditions of the offer, as well as the interest rate and repayment schedule, before accepting the mortgage.

Scenario 2 – Sarah Going Grocery Shopping in 2040

As Sarah walked into the grocery store, she was greeted by a friendly robot that offered to assist her with her shopping needs.

Sarah used her smartphone to scan a QR code on the robot, which immediately recognized her and provided her with a personalized shopping list based on her previous purchases, dietary restrictions, and preferences. The robot then handed her a sleek and modern shopping cart equipped with advanced sensors, cameras, and AI algorithms.

As Sarah made her way through the store, the shopping cart followed her around autonomously, offering personalized recommendations for complementary products based on her preferences. The cart also used its sensors to detect the items that Sarah placed in it, ensuring that she didn’t forget anything on her list.

When Sarah was finished with her shopping, she simply walked through a no-touch facial recognition payment system, which identified her and charged her account automatically. The shopping cart then autonomously returned to its charging station, ready to assist the next customer.

Scenario 3 – Sam and Tiffany Speed Dating in an Autonomous Vehicle in 2040

Sam and Tiffany had signed up for a speed-dating event and were picked up by a sleek and modern autonomous vehicle that had been specially designed for the occasion.

As they settled into the comfortable and futuristic interior of the vehicle, the AI-powered virtual assistant greeted them and explained the rules and format of the speed-dating event. The vehicle then started to drive them to their first date location, a trendy restaurant reserved exclusively for the event.

As they arrived at the restaurant, the autonomous vehicle parked itself, and the virtual assistant provided them with a brief overview of their first date. They had a great time getting to know each other over a delicious meal, and when it was time to move on to the next location, the autonomous vehicle drove them to their next destination.

Over the course of the evening, Sam and Tiffany were introduced to several potential matches, and they found themselves enjoying the unique and futuristic speed-dating experience. The autonomous vehicle provided them with a safe and comfortable environment in which to get to know each other, and the AI-powered virtual assistant ensured that the event ran smoothly and efficiently.

As the evening came to a close, the autonomous vehicle drove Sam and Tiffany back to their respective homes, and the virtual assistant asked them for feedback on their speed-dating experience. Sam and Tiffany agreed that the autonomous vehicle provided a unique and enjoyable setting for the event, and they both felt optimistic about the potential for a future relationship.

Scenario 8 – David going through an Airport to Catch his Flight in 2040

In 2040, going through an airport had become a completely different experience with the help of advanced technology. David arrived at the airport and checked in his luggage with the help of an AI-powered robot that could scan and verify his identity using advanced facial recognition algorithms.

As he made his way through security, David used his biometric data to quickly pass through the checkpoints without the need for traditional security checks. The security system used advanced AI algorithms to detect any potential threats or risks, making the security process much more efficient and effective.

After passing through security, David walked through a duty-free store that was equipped with advanced augmented reality displays, providing him with personalized recommendations and offers based on his preferences and purchase history.

David then made his way to his gate, where he boarded a futuristic airplane that was equipped with advanced AI-powered systems. The airplane could adjust its altitude and speed to optimize its fuel consumption, making the flight more environmentally friendly and cost-effective.

During the flight, David used advanced in-flight entertainment systems that offered personalized recommendations based on his preferences, providing him with a truly immersive and enjoyable experience.

When the airplane landed, David used his biometric data to quickly pass through the customs and immigration checkpoints without the need for long queues or manual checks.

Closing Thoughts

The future is a fascinating and sometimes scary place, but it’s also full of possibilities and opportunities. The scenarios we explored today are just the tip of the iceberg; we can only imagine what else the future has in store for us. As we continue to push the boundaries of technology, we must also remember to approach these innovations with caution and mindfulness, always keeping in mind the potential risks and dangers. By doing so, we can ensure that the future is not only exciting but also safe and sustainable for generations to come.

While it’s already possible to run a virtual reality (VR) cooking school in the metaverse, one that demonstrates a three-dimensional Julia Child approach to preparing food, there are several emerging technologies that will add entirely new sensory experiences. These cutting-edge advances will not only redefine our online experience but will also pave the way for everything from virtual wine tasting, to online Costco food samples, to virtual chili cookoffs.

People in the future metaverse will indeed be able to taste, smell, touch, chew, and experience food and beverages. And the best part will be zero calories from the virtual food.

But will our avatars be okay drinking alcohol or using cannabis without their desired side effects? Most probably won’t, as evidenced by the current market share for non-alcoholic beverages. However, we’ll likely develop VR technology that will simulate those sensations as well – like relaxation and reduced inhibitions to name just two.

After all, the purpose and value of the metaverse is to recreate and duplicate as many aspects of physical life as possible. To do that, we’ll need to be able to experience the metaverse with every one of our five primary senses in the same way we engage with everything we come across in the physical world.

In fact, the metaverse cooking school may be one of the more ambitious tests of this parallel world, given that fine cuisine relies on two of the most discerning and individualized senses: taste and smell. These two exceptionally sensitive senses often work together. While I’m told it’s a myth that you can’t taste food while you plug your nose, just consider the health condition called anosmia, the simultaneous loss of taste and smell that’s one of the better-known symptoms of COVID.

How Do We Experience the Metaverse?

As we plan for the cooking school, though, it’s important to understand both the difference and the linkage between VR and the metaverse. Both are progressing side by side and it’s no wonder we equate the experiences.

Does gaming on your VR Oculus headset place you in the metaverse? It’s a matter of semantics. Some would call this “a metaverse,” others call it a pretty neat alternate sensory experience. Both can be right.

In my studies and analyses, I tend to focus on “the Web 3 metaverse,” the single, under-development, unifying, parallel-life, alternate universe that extends beyond any single gaming environment to replicate and create new and better human institutions, businesses, and experiences. It’s substantially more than a game.

But whether you’re gaming, setting up a cooking school, or buying virtual real estate (and be sure to see my blog next week on the latter), for the time being, these will require specialized VR sensory equipment to engage in the experience.

Progress in VR Sensory Experiences

In the earliest manifestations of VR, the tools accounted for two of the five major senses – sight and sound. The experience in both is getting better all the time with each breakthrough.

Next came haptic suits and gloves to virtually mimic touch, skin, and body sensations. In other words, you’ll feel getting punched or having a zombie tap you on the shoulder. That’s three of the five basic human senses down … and two to go.

Smell and Taste – The Last Major VR Sensory Frontier

Understandably, recreating the senses of taste and smell in VR and ultimately the metaverse has been trickier. But we’re seeing breakthroughs in that regard as well and we’ll be in the metaverse cooking school before you know it!

Of the two, recreating the sense of smell might be easier. New technology has been introduced that will not only offer that olfactory sensation but also integrate it with VR sight and haptic touch experiences as well. You’ll see a virtual orange on the tree, pluck it off, and smell it. So far so good, but not good enough.

Taste is probably the trickiest sense to capture virtually. We’re seeing some breakthroughs here, too, though. In one manifestation, there’s the emergence of gadgets that trick the taste receptors on your tongue to convince you that a real chunk of algae tastes like a virtual medium-rare piece of filet or a bite of pound cake. Here’s a report on what this dining experience is like.

Other promising VR tasting technologies are exploring ways to electronically simulate jaw muscle activity to reproduce the sense of chewing. Clearly, there’s a way to go yet in the taste department, including the ability to remember the taste of an orange so you can anticipate the experience and trigger saliva glands. Equally important will be the ability to imagine and virtually predict sensory taste outcomes – how the egg would taste with a dash of salt, for example.

Once we’re able to use our virtual sense of taste in this way, we’ll be ready to have a true experience in cooking school that goes beyond mixing ingredients according to a formula.

Final Thoughts on VR and the Metaverse

With those five virtual senses in hand, so to speak, we’ll count on creative geniuses to artificially create some additional virtual reality sensory experiences, for example, hunger, balance, pain sensation, temperature sensitivity, and more.

And finally, to completely experience the metaverse with all of our senses, will we need to suit up with helmets, haptic suits, taste-bud stimulators, and the like? Yes, until someone finds a way to hardwire our brains with all of this capability so we can simply switch it on and off and make the trip unencumbered.

A few years ago, I wrote a column titled, “How Much are the VR Broadcasting Rights Worth for NFL Football?” I described how in the near future we would safely attach several cameras around players’ football helmets, and through virtual reality (VR), viewers could immerse themselves into the action those players experience in conjunction with visual perspectives from around the stadium. With some haptic feedback suits, they would also be able to “feel” the action on the field.

In fact, NFL teams are now using helmet cams in practices and warmups but not during a regular season game. The NFL also occasionally arranges for the camera hat vantage point of officiating team members – especially the back and field judges who face the action from the defensive side of the ball and the umpire who watches the play from the quarterback’s perspective.

However, it’s just a matter of time until we have player helmet-cams being used in regular and post-season NFL game broadcasts. Over the last few decades, the NFL game viewing experience has steadily improved with instant replay, color programming, mics spread across the stadium, multiple camera views, and real-time stats. Soon you will be able to add many other user-enhancing VR features to this list.

The Limits of VR

Much of the fun of watching football games, or other sporting events, concerts, etc. – whether on television or in person – is the social aspect of the experience.

Traditional VR technology tends to isolate the viewer from people in the rest of the viewing location.

Sure, viewers and their friends can all wear the same devices and possibly watch the action from the same perspectives. They can talk to each other out of the sides of their mouth as they view the Hail Mary pass or game-saving tackle (“Oh man, did you SEE that!), but everyone remains locked into their own view and their own micro experiences.

Yes, these VR NFL fans are still in the real world, and yes, they’re looking at vastly new perspectives of the real world.

Another World Altogether

In contrast, how about groups of friends meeting at the stadium – in the metaverse – where they’re able to not only watch the game but engage with each other, exchange high-fives and razz the fans of the opposing team sitting behind them?

This kind of emerging experience takes VR to a new level. There’s a big difference between interacting in a single-viewer experience (traditional VR) and viewing it virtually as a group in the metaverse – with all the benefits of the point-of-view technology that allows for a much more immersive viewing experience of the event itself.

Basketball First

Meta, formerly known as Facebook, is already working with the NBA to broadcast NBA games for fans in the metaverse. Based on reported experiences of some users, the technology is in its infancy, but it demonstrates the promise of creating the kind of real-time, personalized, interpersonal experience of being at a game in the best possible seats and among the best possible company.

Future Implications

As this technology advances and finds its way into the NFL experience, we may see a decline in in-person attendance at average in-season games. Team owners who plan ahead, though, won’t be financially affected as they find unusual new ways to monetize the meta-viewing experience.

Competitive teams will still sell lots of actual, in-person $300+ tickets to die-hard fans, along with beers, nachos, and jerseys. But tens of thousands more fans will pay $50 for a meta-virtual second deck seat and proportionately more for seats closer to the field. At halftime, they might buy an official NFL-licensed NFT team jersey. These viewers may see ads during some of the breaks in the action, except for those viewers who bought premium skybox tickets or hold season tickets.

New Angles

And when it comes to camera angles, there will be very few limits. Every player, coach, and official will have a helmet/hat cam with an audio microphone, capturing pretty much everything except play-calling in the huddle. Technology will be available to immediately scrub the audio to preserve G-ratings upon request.

We’ll need to get used to player helmet camera views. A few years back when the World Football League was experimenting with helmet cams, after a particularly hard hit, a quarterback’s helmet was knocked off his head, falling to the ground, creating the visual impression for many that the player had been decapitated!

Beyond helmets, though, cameras will also be at both points of the football. Quarterbacks who don’t throw spirals could make this a pretty troubling viewpoint, although gyroscope technology will limit that effect somewhat.

Drones have been used by NFL teams in many ways – except for recording game action. Among the future metaverse football viewing options will be quiet drone cams programmed to follow plays from either the offensive or defensive perspective, key players, or even sideline activity.

“In-Person” vs Viewing Events

Metaverse inhabitants/avatars will have the option of experiencing an NFL game at the metaverse stadium or remotely at their meta-home or in another meta-viewing venue. Fans at the virtual stadium will likely key in on just a few game views to keep their experience more manageable and realistic.

Metaverse viewing parties will be a different story, though, as the presentation mixes these views in accordance with the wishes of the attendees. They’ll be able to watch a play live from the quarterback’s perspective and then the replay from the football cam as the ball soars to the receiver downfield and then from the back judge’s view as they call pass interference. Hosts will hire producers to adeptly switch back and forth among these views as details of the plays evolve both during and after the play.

We’ll see retired players hosting viewing parties in the metaverse, offering running commentary and answering questions. Yes, quite a bit like ESPN’s breakthrough Monday Night Football ManningCast!

Groups will rent out venues in the metaverse to watch the big game as a for-profit venture, to entertain clients, or raise funds for charity.

Adapting the Game to the Metaverse

To prevent all of the unique views and vantage points in a game from being wasted on metaverse fans, and much to the chagrin of NFL purists, the NFL will likely increase the time between plays from 40 to 60 seconds to allow for multiple vantage point replays. Official overseers “in New York” will also take advantage of these perspectives.

Other rule changes and practices will invariably be adopted to optimize the experience for metaverse viewers.

The Expanding Sports Metaverse

This combination of metaverse in-person/avatar viewing and the more expansive metaverse viewing party experiences can and will be replicated in most other sports. Faster-paced, less predictable sports will probably make the best use of it.

But even aficionados of the more gentile, predictable sports like horse racing and golf will want to be there in-person or in-avatar to see first-hand the event’s nuances, like saddling up and club selection as the action unfolds.
