				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><p>Recently, I was listening to a podcast from Marc Andreessen, who commented that there were no headquarters for the Roman Empire since people back then didn&#8217;t really have a need for offices.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m not sure that&#8217;s completely true. After all, the Romans did invent the business district, and there certainly needed to be a few offices in the palace for the white-collar workers of that era to keep records regarding trade, crop production, census, and other information.</p>
<p>What is certainly true, though, is that offices then as now, reflect, in radically different ways, how we work, communicate, and collaborate. Those factors have evolved over time and will continue to do so.</p>
<h2>The Beginning and Middle Ages of Offices</h2>
<p><a href="https://senion.com/insights/the-ancient-roots-of-working-in-an-office/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" title="History of the Office: Ancient roots">Early offices seemed to be simply places of solitude in which to do solitary work</a> – scribing, copying, accounting, and so on. We don’t get the sense that they were places of collaboration. They were shared worksites in locations that also housed records related to the kingdom and, later, commercial entities.</p>
<p>Eventually, those scribes and their peers did their work in locations meant primarily for information storage. It made sense to do the counting and ciphering in the location where that data, in the form of pages and scrolls, would be stored.</p>
<p>Then, as enterprises required more and more employees, these information storage-based offices also served as places of coordinated, overseen activity. As late as the mid-1900s, working in an office wasn’t so much for the sake of team building, planning, and problem-solving as it was for top-down communication, direction, and oversight.</p>
<h2>Modern Offices</h2>
<p>With the advent of Cloud storage in the 1980s and 90s, the need for offices to serve as central information repositories became less compelling.</p>
<p>At the same time, influential business leaders like Peter Drucker were promoting the idea of employee empowerment and management delegation. These radical ideas ultimately led to less hierarchy within office environments, and offices began serving as ecosystems in which teams could collaborate and where innovation could be nurtured.</p>
<p>To accommodate this, at the turn of this century, office space began to look different, with increased shared space (including, unfortunately, cubicle farms) and open work environments, complete with the ubiquitous foosball tables, coffee bars, and bean bag chairs in rooms of solitude.</p>
<h2>Communication Tech Changes Teams … and Offices</h2>
<p>As businesses became more global, international organizations needed to remain in touch to coordinate and collaborate. With teams more geographically dispersed and thanks to improved interactive communication technology, co-location became less important. Offices connected with other offices and people connected with offices through teleconferences. Remember conference calls?</p>
<p><a href="https://www.taskade.com/blog/video-conferencing-app-evolution-history/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" title="The Evolution of Video Conferencing">Video conferencing technology was actually developed in the mid-1900s</a> (Bell’s Picturephone was demonstrated at the New York World’s Fair in 1964), but it was incredibly expensive and not terribly practical for widespread business use until the introduction of Skype and WhatsApp after the turn of the century.</p>
<p>Today’s popular video conferencing tools like Zoom and Microsoft Teams emerged just in time – a few years before the pandemic.</p></div>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><h2>The Great Scatter and Work from Home</h2>
<p>At the outset of the pandemic, offices went dark, and organizations took full advantage of these communication tools as their employees transitioned to working from home. Whereas previously, these technologies were used primarily for connecting multiple offices or people to offices, now they are used to connect teams of individuals without any office.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s interesting to consider that video conferencing has led to physical isolation and, in too many cases, reduced emotional investment in a team&#8217;s shared purpose instead of drawing people and offices together.</p>
<p>Today, the future of the office stands at a crossroads. Will it survive as a place for workers and teams to work in a home away from home, or will offices completely fade away, leaving companies to devise other methods for developing cohesion and collaboration?</p>
<p>The answer is: &#8220;neither&#8221; and &#8220;both.&#8221; It will vary by company and employee and reflect the relative clout of each at any point in time.</p>
<p>What&#8217;s clear, though, is that offices will look different than they do now, trends that may have been underway prior to the pandemic but were sent into hyperdrive in the past several years.</p>
<h2>Nine Visions of the Next Version of the Office</h2>
<p>Given the historical evolution of the office from an information repository to a collaborative space and the pandemic-driven enhancements in intra-office communication/collaboration technology, what lies ahead for the future of the office?</p>
<ol>
<li style="padding-bottom: 5px;">Most major companies will maintain headquarters and major regional offices. For many, an office is a part of their brand, as much as the Hollywood sign isn&#8217;t just there to tell us where we are but to conjure up the city&#8217;s unique aura.</li>
<li style="padding-bottom: 5px;">If they choose to, owners of desirable and trendy companies will be able to make tomorrow&#8217;s offices look a lot like the offices of five years ago. Elon Musk has reportedly told his Tesla employees they must work at least 40 hours each week in Tesla offices. Those who don&#8217;t want to comply can &#8220;pretend to work elsewhere,&#8221; he tweeted.</li>
<li style="padding-bottom: 5px;">Office vacancy rates will decline. During the pandemic, the pendulum swung well toward work-from-home-or-anywhere during the pandemic and remained there as defiant workers said they&#8217;d never go back. But the realities of today&#8217;s economic downturn are putting clout back in the hands of management.</li>
<li style="padding-bottom: 5px;">Many companies, unlike Tesla, will compromise and create hybrid office arrangements that combine days in the office with days outside the office. Days in the offices will feel more like a business trip – a chance to change scenery and stay in touch with colleagues and friends. Employees may be even less productive on those days due to these distractions.</li>
<li style="padding-bottom: 5px;">Most companies will have a smaller office footprint, thanks to desk sharing, hybrid schedules, and employees who will remain remote due to pandemic-era relocations.</li>
<li style="padding-bottom: 5px;">Offices will be reconfigured and rearranged. The pandemic may be over, but memories are long. Concentrated cubicle areas, for example, will feel dangerous – they&#8217;ll go the way of floppy disks, fax machines, pagers, and file cabinets. Offices will still have a common workspace but with plenty of elbow room.</li>
<li style="padding-bottom: 5px;">To compete with home offices and coffee shops, offices will feel a little more like both, with relaxed dress codes, flexible hours, and more on-site amenities.</li>
<li style="padding-bottom: 5px;">Some &#8220;offices&#8221; will exist solely in the Cloud. For example, my son works for <a href="https://www.techtarget.com/searchhrsoftware/news/252509222/GitLabs-head-of-remote-work-talks-successes-and-strategy" target="_blank" rel="noopener" title="GitLab's head of remote work talks successes and strategy">GitLabs, the world&#8217;s largest fully remote company</a>, and it&#8217;s growing by leaps and bounds.</li>
<li style="padding-bottom: 5px;">Owners will need to integrate emotional well-being considerations into their office space infrastructure and office activities. Our world has changed in the past three years – even beyond the impact of the pandemic – and it will be more important than ever to maintain an office that feels like a respite from the world.</li>
</ol>
<p>In the future, fewer employees will work full time from offices. But these spaces will always be a part of corporate life in general, even as they continue to evolve to meet the needs of company leaders and, increasingly, their employees.</p></div>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><p>Pandemic or no, technology and innovation keep marching along. That will be the key to personal financial and national macro-economic progress. Take television technology … please!</p>
<p>Twenty-five years ago, a 32-inch television was massive and ridiculously heavy, bulky enough to be considered a piece of furniture. Today that same screen size seems too small even for a bedroom. We can buy an inconceivably gigantic 75-inch screen for less than $1,000 and then hang it on the wall, taking up no floor space.</p>
<p>What will it be like to watch television at home 25 years from now? Will it still be an appliance found on or along the wall? Will it be a projected image? Or maybe digital wallpaper?</p>
<p>And then there’s the viewing experience itself. At what point will home television become three dimensional in space, like a hologram? Will it have touchscreen capabilities like our cellphones? Will we be able to stretch or shrink the image, rotate it, alter the background music to match our mood, or change the point-of-view perspective?</p>
<p>What are the limits to customized viewing experiences? How about editing the characters in a television movie so they look like ourselves? Or selecting alternate endings and divergent plots just like we do now with some interactive dinner theater presentations?</p>
<h2>Our Demand-Driven Economy</h2>
<p>The point here is that there seemingly will be no end to innovation in television technology. In turn, this innovation will drive demand for new television entertainment systems.</p>
<p>The same can be said about everything from smartphones to automobiles. Most of us upgrade these and similar products fairly frequently, chasing innovation and new features that we never knew we needed but suddenly can’t do without.</p>
<h2>Innovation &#8211; The Ultimate Job Creator</h2>
<p>So, let’s take it a step further. Innovation drives demand … and demand drives business activity and job creation.</p>
<p>That’s why, contrary to what many people are leading us to believe, we’re entering an era of super employment driven in large part by our shortened attention spans, our tendency to be bored with last year’s models, and our desire to be seen on the cutting edge in all things. The first to get the iPhone XX. Eager to demonstrate our devotion to earth stewardship by buying the latest model electric car.</p>
<h2>Powered by AI</h2>
<p>Much of the future innovation in consumer products will be driven by artificial intelligence – not only in features but production processes. Machines are getting smarter and can take over repetitive, time-consuming tasks. Human beings will be able to <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/forbestechcouncil/2019/03/06/three-ways-artificial-intelligence-can-drive-human-innovation/?sh=b9a13de7940d" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" title="Artificial Intelligence can drive human innovation">“upscale” their jobs to contribute higher-level value</a> related to production innovation and strategy – the kinds of functions that machines can’t as easily replicate.</p>
<p>Repetitive tasks will be “outsourced” to AI solutions, allowing the human workforce to be creative and somewhat more independent. Prospective employees will have more choices than ever, and the freelance world will provide an alluring alternative to traditional employment. Even with COVID behind us, “working from home” will continue to be the case for many people and that will increasingly feed into a “working for myself” mindset.</p></div>

<p>It’s important that employees realize technology will not so much replace human jobs as it will upscale human jobs. The people who are only comfortable in, or who prefer, a more machine-like work role will need to expand their horizons. Schools will need to instill this mindset.</p>
<p>It’s equally important, though, that tomorrow’s workers realize that not everyone will be expected to be a computer programmer. However, they will need to embrace an almost supervisory role when it comes to machine work processes. Fortunately, innovation not only creates new capabilities and efficiencies, but it can make technical jobs less technical.</p>
<h2>Micro-industries and jobs</h2>
<p>Over the coming two decades, we’ll witness an unprecedented wave of innovation and creativity driven by new tools of production. And during that time, we’ll also see an explosion of tens of thousands of new micro-industries that will employ hundreds of thousands of people.</p>
<p>Thanks to a wide array of emerging technologies, there will be an assortment of innovative “playgrounds” for thinkers, inventors, and entrepreneurs that will spring to life. They’ll launch micro-industries that range from manufacturing, data management, system design, advising, coaching, monitoring, assembling, disassembling, and reinventing business in unique and different ways.</p>
<p>With the help of thousands of collaborators, micro-industries will spring to life around niches far too small for existing industries to care about. But it’s within these incremental advances that great opportunities take root. That’s always been the case. We rely on startups to develop new processes or products that ultimately are absorbed into a larger enterprise.</p>
<h2>Hang on tight and ride the wave</h2>
<p>As noted at the outset, we won’t run out of innovation – and it’s not just televisions and cars. A simple coffee mug can be redesigned in a dozen ways. The same holds true for many other consumer and commercial products.</p>
<p>We’re entering an unusually creative period of human history. Those who embrace this kind of change will prosper, and companies that study and embrace this fluid “jobscape” will build flourishing enterprises. Our leaders and government policies should remove all possible roadblocks that might inhibit this.</p>
<p>Then over time, but sooner than you think, we’ll find ourselves with far more jobs than we’re able to fill – an era of <a href="/business-trends/have-we-reached-peak-employment-24-future-industries-that-will-lead-to-an-era-of-super-employment/" title="24 future industries that will lead to an era of super employment">super employment</a>.</p></div>

<p>The art of creating the perfect driving experience has been extremely complicated, with humans coming in a variety of shapes and sizes and the car itself evolving into far more than just a machine. </p>
<p>In addition to the exterior design, their work involved the sculpting of controls, indicator lights, knobs, buttons, and gauges into the best possible dashboard to support the driver as they grasped the all-important steering wheel. The right combination of shapes, styles, sounds, and tiny nuanced details had us “oohing” and “aahing” as each new vehicle purred its way into our imaginations.</p>
<p>But that was then. Those kind of skills have quickly become last week’s news!</p>
<p>As cars start to drive themselves, designers have had to radically shift their thinking. Once the primary activity of driving disappears, designers have begun to focus on other activities happening inside a vehicle – sitting, talking, eating, sleeping, playing games, watching movies, looking out the window, and talking to the navigation system.</p>
<p>In what seems like a few short months, virtually everything that car designers learned over the past 120 years has been thrown into a no-longer-needed heap on the floor, and the tools and information base that has been formed around the craft-of-the-creator has had to begin again.</p>
<p>Once the primary task of driving has been automated out of existence, the entire profession will have to reframe it’s thinking around an entirely new set of goals, principals, and requirements. </p>
<p>Employment ads for next generation designers will begin to describe the skills they’re looking for in radically different ways. Luminaries of the past will quickly be relegated to the vestiges of time as the accomplishments of the future form around an entirely new vocabulary.</p>
<p>Logically we wonder if this signals the start of an entirely new profession or simply a variation of the skills and talents that led us to this point. </p>
<p>To be sure, car designers are just one example of this kind of transformation.</p>
<p>A quick survey of the employment landscape and we begin to see unusual new skills rising in importance in numerous industries. As task upon task becomes automated out of existence, we find ourselves asking the same question. “Does this constitute an entirely new profession, or simply a modification of the old one?”</p>
<p>Throughout history we have many examples of old school thinking that has simply faded away. As example, we no longer need to understand map legends, party lines, how to apply brakes on a horse-drawn carriage, read electrical meters, or use a toll booth. The vast majority of us will never have to learn how to shoe-a-horse, milk a cow, treat animal bites, tan a hide, shovel coal, or pasteurize milk.</p>
<p>In the future, very few people will know how to change channels on a three-remote television, connect to Wi-Fi, order something without talking, open a bank account, or pay with cash.</p>
<p>The demands of life are changing, and so are the prospects for employment.</p></div>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><h2>The New Employer-Employee Relationship</h2>
<p>At a recent “Future of Work” roundtable discussion hosted by the <a href="https://news.usa.siemens.biz/blog/doing-well-doing-good-siemens-again-ranked-fortunes-change-world-list" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Siemens Corporation</a> at their Princeton Robotics Plant, participants were asked what employers need to think about in the future.</p>
<p>Dr. Kurt Bettenhausen, Senior VP of Technology for Siemens began by discussing their lengthy interview process, 4-8 hours in most cases, and the primary characteristics he’s looking for – curiosity and the use of the word “no” (he rarely hires “yes” people). </p>
<p>Our litigious society has turned the hiring process into a minefield of legal requirements, and ferreting out great candidates has become a laborious process.</p>
<p>Looking at employment through a different lens, being a topic I’ve written about many times in the past, I focused on the shifting skillsets that will be needed in the future.</p>
<p>The skills that will be most in-demand in the future will be some of the hardest to train – resilience, resourcefulness, and flexibility.</p>
<p>In addition, having a solid understanding of how to better manage the encroaching demands of our online existence with skills such as distraction management, technology management, relationship management, opportunity management, and just staying relevant.</p>
<p>We are now aware of far more of what’s happening in the world than ever before, and our ability to assess, gauge, and monitor its importance and somehow act or respond in some appropriate fashion has become critical.</p>
<h2>The Growing College Debate</h2>
<p>Do people still need a college degree to succeed? </p>
<p>While there are countless reports published that show college graduates earning far more than those without degrees, I have yet to see a report that compares similar-caliber individuals who take opposing college vs. no-college career paths.</p>
<p>Many of our highest paying jobs in fields like computer programming, commercial pilots, cyber security, real-estate brokers, plumbers, cloud architects, crime scene detectives, and web developers typically don’t require a degree at all.</p>
<p>Virtually any bright student can learn a marketable skill in just a few months, and with several years of solid work experience under their belt by the time their counterparts graduate from college, non-degreed workers often have an easier time navigating the employment landscape.</p>
<p>Once a person has developed a marketable skill, they can begin taking control their own destiny, and building a “business of one” career path on their way to becoming an accomplished freelancer.</p></div>

<p>The Internet is a very sophisticated communications tool, enabling us to align the needs of a business with the talent of individuals in a far more precise ways than ever before. So rather than hiring someone full-time, companies can create a short term contract of 2 months, 2 weeks, 2 days, or even 2 hours.</p>
<p>Our tools for managing this type of work relationship are getting better and will soon give us the ability to apply the precise amount of talent, as needed, whenever a new situation arises.</p>
<p>But while we’re getting better at the employer side of this equation we’re still faring poorly when it comes to training next generation freelancers. In order to thrive in this type of work environment, solo practitioners need a wide range of business skills ranging from creating a business entity, to writing business proposals, to negotiating contracts, marketing, accounting and much more. </p>
<h3>Freelancer Stats</h3>
<p>Yes, there’s a big difference between a newbie freelancer and one who’s a total rockstar, but it all begins with taking that first bold step, and that’s where controlling one’s own life journey starts making sense.</p>
<p>Here are a few stats to give a quick overview of the rapidly changing freelance landscape:</p>
<ul>
<li>70% of small businesses have hired a freelancer in the past</li>
<li>81% plan to hire freelancers in the future</li>
<li>52% of hiring managers say that the number of freelancers will increase in the next 5 years</li>
<li>59.7 million people worked as freelancers in 2018</li>
<li>52% of freelancer work comes from repeat customers</li>
<li>Full time freelancers average 4.5 clients a month</li>
<li>50% of freelancers say they wouldn’t take a traditional job no matter how much they were offered</li>
<li>17% of freelancers in 2018 will earn over $100,000</li>
<li>One-third of U.S. office workers have a second job</li>
<li>1.3 million people drive Uber, many doing this as a fill-in for other freelance work</li>
<li>In 2027, at current growth rates, the number of freelancers will exceed the number of full time employees</li>

<p>Contrary to what many people are leading us to believe, we’re entering a world of super employment. Prospective employees will have more choices than ever, and the freelance world will provide an alluring alternative to traditional employment.</p>
<p>Over the coming two decades we will be witnessing an unprecedented wave of innovation and creativity driven by new tools of production. During this time we will see an explosion of over 100,000 new micro industries that will employ hundreds of millions of people.</p>
<p>Driven by a wide array of emerging technology, an assortment of innovative playgrounds for makers, inventors, and startup junkies will spring to life, launching micro industries that range from manufacturing products, to collecting data, designing systems, advising, coaching, monitoring, building, disassembling, and reinventing business in unique and different ways.</p>
<p>With the help of thousands of collaborators, micro industries will spring to life around niches far too small for existing industries to care about. But it is in these minuscule advances that great opportunities take root.</p>
<p>A simple coffee mug can be redesigned in thousands of different ways. The same holds true for every toothbrush, piece of clothing, ink pen, lamp, chair, and hundreds of other frequently bought consumer products.</p>
<p>We are entering an unusually creative period of human history. Those who embrace this kind of change will prosper, and companies that study and embrace this fluid “jobscape” will build flourishing enterprises in the years ahead.</p></div>
