Last week, I found myself in a familiar yet unexpected situation: helping my grandson with his homework. As I sat down at the kitchen table, ready to impart my years of wisdom, I felt a surge of anticipation. After all, how difficult could a fifth-grader’s English assignment be for someone who’s navigated decades of professional and personal correspondence?

My confidence, however, was short-lived. As we pored over the worksheet, a term leaped out at me, stopping me in my tracks: “predicate nominative.” I blinked, certain I had misread. But there it was, clear as day, a grammatical term I hadn’t encountered in at least 40 years. My grandson looked at me expectantly, waiting for the expertise I had so confidently promised. Instead, I found myself fumbling for words, the definition eluding me like a half-remembered dream.

In that moment, as I reached for my smartphone to quickly refresh my memory, I was struck by a realization. Here was a concept I had undoubtedly learned in school, probably around the same age as my grandson is now. Yet in four decades of reading, writing, and communicating, I had never once consciously used or even thought about a “predicate nominative.” This revelation led me down a rabbit hole of reflection: How many other academic terms and concepts had I learned, only to have them fade into the recesses of my mind, unused and unnecessary in my day-to-day life?

As I helped my grandson complete his assignment, explaining the newly re-learned concept, I couldn’t shake the feeling that we were engaging in a curious academic ritual – one that might have little bearing on his future ability to communicate effectively. This experience sparked a broader contemplation about education, the knowledge we prioritize in our schools, and the ever-evolving landscape of what constitutes useful information in our rapidly changing world.

The Burden of Obsolete Knowledge

The encounter with “predicate nominative” opened a floodgate of memories, bringing to mind a parade of academic terms that once occupied countless hours of study but have since faded into obscurity in my daily life. Terms like “predicate” and “axiom” once loomed large in grammar and mathematics classes, their importance stressed by well-meaning teachers. Yet, outside of academic circles, how often do we consciously identify the predicate in a sentence or discuss axioms in our day-to-day problem-solving?

The list grows longer as I reflect: diphthongs and onomatopoeia in language arts, homophones and gerunds in grammar, polyhedrons in geometry, and mnemonics across various subjects. Each of these terms represents a concept that, while potentially valuable in specific contexts, rarely surfaces in the average person’s life beyond the classroom. Even mathematical processes like factorization, drilled into us through countless homework assignments, seldom find practical application in adulthood unless one’s career specifically demands it. The Past Perfect Tense, a grammatical structure we use naturally in speech, is rarely identified or analyzed in our daily communications.

This realization highlights a striking disconnect between the academic focus of our educational systems and the practical application of knowledge in everyday life. Hours spent memorizing and categorizing these terms could arguably have been devoted to more immediately applicable skills or knowledge. It’s not that these concepts are entirely without value – they form part of the rich tapestry of language and logical thinking. However, the emphasis placed on memorizing and regurgitating such terminology often comes at the expense of developing more practical communication and problem-solving skills.

Moreover, this disconnect raises questions about the nature of education itself. Are we burdening students with obsolete knowledge, creating an unnecessary cognitive load that might discourage learning? In an age where information is readily accessible at our fingertips, is the memorization of esoteric terms the best use of limited educational time and resources? Perhaps most importantly, how does this academic-practical divide shape students’ perceptions of education and its relevance to their future lives?

As we navigate an increasingly complex and rapidly changing world, it becomes crucial to reevaluate what knowledge is truly essential. The challenge lies in striking a balance between providing a broad foundation of knowledge and equipping students with skills that will serve them well in their personal and professional lives. This reflection isn’t about dismissing academic rigor but rather about questioning whether our current educational priorities align with the realities of the world our students will inherit.

The Impact of AI on Traditional Learning

As we grapple with the relevance of traditional academic knowledge, we cannot ignore the elephant in the room: the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and its profound impact on how we learn and process information. The rise of AI-powered tools is reshaping our approach to language and communication in ways that were unimaginable just a few years ago.

Consider the once-sacred rules of sentence structure drilled into students through countless exercises and red-pen corrections. Today, AI writing assistants can instantly restructure our sentences for clarity and impact, often surpassing human editors in efficiency. This technological leap raises a poignant question: in a world where AI can polish our prose, how much time should we dedicate to teaching the intricacies of sentence diagramming?

Cursive writing, once a cornerstone of elementary education, now faces near-extinction in many curricula. With keyboards ubiquitous and digital signatures becoming the norm, the flowing script that our grandparents prized is increasingly viewed as an archaic art form rather than a necessary skill. While some argue for its cognitive benefits, the practicality of cursive in a digital age is increasingly questionable.

Even fundamental aspects of grammar, such as pronoun usage and verb conjugation, are being subtly influenced by AI. Autocorrect and predictive text features silently adjust our pronouns and verb tenses, often without us even noticing. As these tools become more sophisticated, they promise to smooth out the rough edges of our written communication effortlessly. This shift prompts us to reconsider the depth of focus these topics deserve in our classrooms.

The impact of AI extends beyond just correcting our language; it’s reshaping how we think and approach problem-solving. There’s a noticeable shift in cognitive processes and skill prioritization. Instead of memorizing rules and exceptions, students might be better served learning how to effectively prompt AI tools, interpret their outputs, and critically evaluate the information provided. The ability to ask the right questions and synthesize information from various sources, including AI, is becoming more valuable than rote memorization of grammatical rules or mathematical formulas.

This technological revolution doesn’t negate the importance of understanding language and communication fundamentals. However, it does challenge us to reconsider what “fundamental” means in an AI-augmented world. Perhaps the new literacy isn’t about mastering every rule of grammar but about understanding how to communicate effectively across various platforms, both with humans and AI.

As educators and parents, we face the complex task of preparing students for a future where AI is an integral part of daily life. This preparation involves not just teaching them how to use these tools but also instilling the critical thinking skills necessary to understand the limitations and potential biases of AI. The goal isn’t to replace human thinking with artificial intelligence but to create a symbiosis where human creativity and AI capabilities enhance each other.

In this evolving landscape, we must strike a delicate balance. While embracing the efficiencies AI brings to learning and communication, we must also ensure that students develop a robust understanding of language and thought processes. The challenge lies in identifying which traditional skills remain crucial for cognitive development and which can be augmented or replaced by AI, allowing us to focus on higher-order thinking and creativity.

The Cyclical Nature of Educational Relevance

The evolution of educational relevance is not a new phenomenon; rather, it’s a cyclical process that has been ongoing since the dawn of formal education. To truly appreciate this cycle, we need only look back at the tools and concepts that were once considered indispensable but have now faded into obscurity.

Take the slide rule, for instance. This analog computing device was once the pinnacle of mathematical technology, a constant companion for engineers and scientists. Students spent countless hours mastering its intricacies, believing it to be an essential skill for their future careers. Yet today, most young people have never even seen a slide rule, let alone used one. The advent of electronic calculators rendered this once-crucial tool obsolete in a matter of decades.

Similarly, the mimeograph machine, with its distinctive purple ink and unmistakable aroma, was once the lifeblood of classroom handouts and school newsletters. Teachers and students alike learned the art of creating and using these copies. Now, in the age of digital distribution and high-speed printers, the mimeograph is nothing more than a nostalgic memory, its skills no longer relevant in modern education.

The punch card, a foundation of early computer programming, offers another example. Students once painstakingly learned to code using these perforated cards, seeing them as the gateway to the future of technology. Today, they’re artifacts of computing history, their techniques as outdated as the machines that read them.

Even in the realm of everyday technology, we see this cycle. The rotary phone, once a ubiquitous household item, required a specific skill set to use efficiently. Children were taught how to dial quickly and accurately. Now, in the age of smartphones, the very concept of “dialing” a number is becoming foreign to younger generations.

On a lighter note, consider the Trapper Keeper, that icon of the 1980s and 1990s school organization. Students were encouraged to develop meticulous organizational skills using these binder systems. Today, digital note-taking apps and cloud storage have largely replaced physical organization systems, changing how students manage their academic lives.

These examples illustrate the silent evolution of curriculum relevance. Educational systems don’t abruptly abandon old tools and concepts; instead, they gradually phase them out as new technologies and ideas take their place. This evolution often happens so subtly that we hardly notice it until we look back and realize how much has changed.

The challenge for educators and curriculum designers is to recognize this cycle and stay ahead of it. What skills and knowledge are on the cusp of becoming obsolete? What emerging technologies or concepts should be incorporated into the curriculum? How can we teach in a way that prepares students not just for the world as it is but for the world as it will be?

This cyclical nature of educational relevance underscores the need for adaptability in our approach to learning. It’s not enough to simply update the tools we use in the classroom; we must also cultivate a mindset of lifelong learning and adaptability in our students. The specific skills and facts they learn today may become obsolete, but the ability to learn, unlearn, and relearn will always remain relevant.

As we reflect on these changes, we’re reminded that education is not static. It’s a living, breathing entity that must evolve with the times. The key is to strike a balance between honoring the fundamental principles of learning and embracing the new realities of our rapidly changing world. In doing so, we can ensure that our educational systems remain relevant, effective, and truly preparatory for the futures our students will inhabit.

Questioning Current Educational Practices

As we reflect on the cyclical nature of educational relevance, we’re inevitably led to a critical examination of our current educational practices. This introspection brings us face-to-face with a challenging question: How much of what we’re teaching today might become obsolete in the near future? It’s a query that should give every educator, policymaker, and parent pause.

Consider the rapid pace of technological advancement and societal change. Skills that seem cutting-edge today could be outmoded within a decade. The coding languages we teach in schools might be replaced by more advanced ones or even by AI that can generate code autonomously. The specific software applications students learn to use might be obsolete by the time they enter the workforce. Even in fields like history and literature, the canon of what’s considered essential knowledge is constantly evolving, influenced by changing societal perspectives and global events.

This realization compels us to take a hard look at our current curricula and identify potential “useless knowledge” – information or skills that may not serve our students well in their future lives and careers. This isn’t to say that all traditional subjects are without value; rather, it’s about questioning the depth and manner in which we teach certain topics. For instance, is memorizing vast lists of historical dates as important as understanding historical trends and their implications for the present? Is solving complex mathematical equations by hand as crucial as understanding the concepts behind them and knowing how to use digital tools to apply these concepts?

In language arts, we might question the emphasis on certain grammatical rules that are rarely applied in real-world communication. In science, we might reconsider the balance between memorizing scientific facts and fostering scientific thinking and inquiry skills. Even in physical education, we might ask whether traditional team sports should take precedence over teaching lifelong fitness skills and health management.

However, identifying “useless knowledge” is not a straightforward task. What seems irrelevant to one person might be foundational to another’s career or personal growth. Moreover, some knowledge that appears impractical might actually be crucial for developing critical thinking skills or providing a broad base of general knowledge that enables adaptability in a rapidly changing world.

The key lies in striking a balance between teaching foundational knowledge and fostering adaptable skills. Perhaps instead of focusing solely on content, we should place greater emphasis on teaching students how to learn, how to think critically, and how to adapt to new information and technologies. This approach would prepare them not just for the jobs of today, but for careers that don’t yet exist and challenges we can’t yet foresee.

As we question our current educational practices, we must also consider the role of interdisciplinary learning. The complex problems of the future will likely require solutions that draw from multiple fields of knowledge. Therefore, teaching students to make connections between different subjects and to apply knowledge from one area to another might be more valuable than deep dives into isolated subjects.

Ultimately, the process of questioning current educational practices and identifying potentially obsolete knowledge is not about dismantling the entire system. Rather, it’s about continually refining and updating our approach to education to ensure it remains relevant and effective. It’s about preparing students not just to pass tests but to thrive in a world of constant change and innovation.

This ongoing evaluation and evolution of our educational practices is crucial. It ensures that we’re not just teaching for today but truly educating for tomorrow – equipping our students with the knowledge, skills, and adaptability they’ll need to navigate an uncertain future and contribute meaningfully to society.

Reimagining Education for the Future

As we critically examine our current educational practices and identify potentially obsolete knowledge, the natural next step is to reimagine education for the future. This reimagining process revolves around two crucial questions: What should children be learning instead? And how can we strike a balance between timeless knowledge and future-focused skills?

In considering what children should be learning, we must first acknowledge that the future job market will likely be characterized by roles we can’t yet envision. Therefore, our focus should shift from teaching specific, potentially short-lived skills to fostering adaptability, creativity, and critical thinking. Digital literacy, for instance, should go beyond mere proficiency with current software; it should encompass an understanding of underlying technological concepts and the ability to quickly adapt to new digital tools.

Problem-solving skills should take center stage, with an emphasis on tackling complex, interdisciplinary challenges. This approach mirrors the real-world scenarios students will face in their future careers and personal lives. Emotional intelligence and social skills, often overlooked in traditional curricula, should be given greater prominence. As automation takes over many routine tasks, uniquely human skills like empathy, negotiation, and collaboration will become increasingly valuable.

Financial literacy is another area that deserves more attention. Understanding personal finance, basic economics, and even entrepreneurship can empower students to navigate the increasingly complex economic landscape they’ll inherit. Similarly, environmental literacy should be woven throughout the curriculum, reflecting the urgent need for sustainable practices in all aspects of life and work.

However, reimagining education isn’t just about adding new subjects or skills. It’s also about transforming how we teach. Project-based learning, for example, can help students apply knowledge across disciplines and develop practical problem-solving skills. Personalized learning pathways, enabled by technology, can allow students to progress at their own pace and dive deeper into areas of personal interest, fostering a love for lifelong learning.

As we embrace these future-focused skills and teaching methods, we must also grapple with the challenge of balancing them with timeless knowledge. Certain fundamental skills and bodies of knowledge remain crucial, regardless of technological advancements. Basic numeracy, reading comprehension, and writing skills, for instance, form the foundation upon which all other learning is built. Historical knowledge, while perhaps not requiring the memorization of specific dates, provides context for understanding current global dynamics and anticipating future trends.

Scientific principles and the scientific method remain timeless, even as specific technologies evolve. The ability to form hypotheses, conduct experiments, and draw conclusions based on evidence is valuable across many fields and in everyday life. Similarly, exposure to literature and the arts cultivates creativity, emotional intelligence, and a deeper understanding of the human experience – skills that will always be relevant.

The key to this balancing act lies in teaching timeless knowledge in a way that emphasizes its ongoing relevance and applicability. Instead of presenting historical facts in isolation, for example, we can encourage students to draw parallels between historical events and current issues. Mathematical concepts can be taught through real-world problem-solving scenarios rather than abstract exercises.

Moreover, we should strive to instill a meta-learning mindset – teaching students not just what to learn but how to learn. This includes skills like information literacy (the ability to find, evaluate, and use information effectively), critical thinking, and self-directed learning. These skills empower students to continue learning and adapting long after they’ve left formal education.

Reimagining education for the future also means embracing a more flexible and dynamic curriculum model. Rather than adhering rigidly to a fixed body of knowledge, educational systems should be designed to evolve continuously, incorporating new knowledge and skills as they become relevant. This might involve more frequent curriculum reviews, closer collaboration with industry and community partners, and a willingness to experiment with new teaching methods and technologies.

Ultimately, the goal of this reimagined education is not just to prepare students for future jobs but to equip them to be engaged, adaptable, and thoughtful citizens in a rapidly changing world. By balancing timeless knowledge with future-focused skills, we can create an educational framework that is both grounded in fundamental principles and responsive to the evolving needs of society. This approach ensures that our children are not just passive recipients of knowledge but active, lifelong learners capable of shaping their own futures and contributing meaningfully to the world around them.

Final Thoughts

As we look deep into the evolving landscape of education, it becomes clear that we stand at a critical juncture. The rapid pace of technological advancement, coupled with the changing demands of the global economy and society, calls for a profound reevaluation of our educational priorities. This is not a task to be taken lightly, nor is it one that can be accomplished by educators alone. It requires a concerted effort from all stakeholders – teachers, administrators, policymakers, parents, and even students themselves.

The call for reevaluation is not about dismantling the entire educational system but rather about critically examining what we teach, how we teach it, and why. We must ask ourselves: Are we truly preparing our students for the world they will inherit, or are we clinging to outdated models that may no longer serve their best interests? This reevaluation should be data-driven, forward-looking, and, most importantly, centered on the needs of the learners themselves.

Central to this reevaluation is the recognition of adaptability as a cornerstone of effective curriculum design. The days of static, unchanging curricula are behind us. In a world where knowledge expands exponentially, and new technologies emerge at a breakneck pace, our educational frameworks must be flexible enough to evolve in tandem. This adaptability should be built into the very fabric of our educational systems, allowing for regular updates and revisions based on emerging trends, new research, and changing societal needs.

Adaptable curricula might involve modular learning units that can be easily updated or replaced, interdisciplinary approaches that break down traditional subject silos, and increased integration of real-world, project-based learning experiences. It could also mean embracing a more personalized approach to education, leveraging technology to allow students to progress at their own pace and explore areas of particular interest or aptitude.

However, this shift towards adaptability must be balanced with a commitment to maintaining high standards and ensuring that all students have access to a robust, well-rounded education. The goal is not to create an educational free-for-all but rather to design systems that can respond nimbly to change while still providing a solid foundation of knowledge and skills.

Perhaps most crucially, we must encourage and sustain an ongoing dialogue about the purpose and content of education. This conversation should extend beyond the walls of schools and education departments to include voices from diverse sectors of society. What do employers need from the next generation of workers? What skills do community leaders see as essential for engaged citizenship? How can education address pressing global challenges like climate change, inequality, and technological disruption?

This dialogue should be continuous and iterative, reflecting the understanding that the purpose of education is not fixed but evolves along with society itself. It should challenge assumptions, welcome diverse perspectives, and be willing to entertain radical ideas alongside more traditional approaches.

Moreover, this ongoing conversation about education should actively involve students themselves. After all, they are not just the beneficiaries of the education system but also its products and, ultimately, its future architects. Their insights into what works, what doesn’t, and what’s missing in their educational experiences can provide invaluable guidance for improvement.

As we engage in this dialogue, we must also be mindful of the broader societal implications of our educational choices. Education is not just about individual achievement or workforce preparation; it’s about shaping the future of our communities and our world. The decisions we make about what to teach and how to teach it will have far-reaching consequences for social cohesion, economic prosperity, and our collective ability to address global challenges.

The tasks before us are both daunting and exhilarating. By reevaluating our educational priorities, embracing adaptability in curriculum design, and fostering an ongoing dialogue about the purpose and content of education, we have the opportunity to reshape learning for the better. This is not a process with a defined endpoint but rather a continuous journey of improvement and adaptation.

As we move forward, let us approach this task with open minds, creative spirits, and an unwavering commitment to providing the best possible education for our children. For in doing so, we are not just preparing them for the future – we are empowering them to create it.

At its core, the trilemma unfolds into three primary dilemmas: the Imagination Dilemma, the Uncertainty Dilemma, and the Action Dilemma. Each of these aspects represents a unique set of challenges: balancing imaginative speculation with realistic analysis, grappling with the inherent uncertainties of future projections, and translating insights into actionable strategies amidst the fear of missteps.

This rich conceptual framework serves as a guide for futurists, urging them to nurture a harmonious interplay of creativity, analytic rigor, and decisive action as they forge paths into uncharted territories. Through the lens of the Futurist’s Trilemma, we are invited to engage deeply with the potentials and pitfalls of future exploration, carving out a space where foresight meets wisdom in the endeavor to shape a more promising tomorrow.

1. The Imagination Dilemma

At the core of future planning, where the canvas of time stretches open-ended, weaving in possibilities not yet materialized, is the first pillar of the Futurist’s Trilemma: the Imagination Dilemma. The ability to project into the yet-to-be-charted territories requires an extraordinary exertion of imagination, one that is both a gift and a challenge.

As futurists, the innate curiosity to explore realms of unprecedented innovations plays a crucial role. This curiosity beckons a journey into speculative yet grounded envisioning, which cultivates a garden of ideas that can potentially change the landscape of tomorrow. However, a boundless imagination can sometimes unmoor us from reality, leading to fantastical imaginations that overlook practical restraints, veering towards the unrealistic and improbable.

Thus, the central task is finding a harmonious balance between creativity and pragmatism, where we foster innovation without losing sight of the tangible and plausible realities. How do we then nourish an imagination that is both vivid and grounded, soaring yet tethered to the nucleus of feasible actualities?

The Dichotomy of Imagination

Nurturing an imaginative foresight involves walking the tightrope between the tangible and the abstract, requiring a nuanced understanding of present realities while allowing space for the mind to explore unprecedented paths. This dual existence lends itself to a spectrum of possibilities, where innovation is not stifled by the constraints of the known yet is founded on a bedrock of existing knowledge and plausible speculations.

Imagination as a Catalyst

By embracing the Imagination Dilemma, futurists can unlock doors to a rich trove of potential solutions to contemporary problems, carving out paths that lead to sustainable and harmonious futures. The challenge, hence, is nurturing an imagination that is a catalyst for positive transformation, not a flight of fancy detached from the intricate realities of human existence.

Navigating the Imagination Dilemma

To successfully navigate this dilemma, there is a need for multidisciplinary approaches that harness insights from a variety of fields, amalgamating them to conceive futures that are both aspirational and grounded.

It is here that a finely tuned sense of discernment comes into play, helping to differentiate between visions that are attainable dreams and those that are mere fabrications of a deluded mind. The emphasis should be on fostering an environment that nurtures critical thinking and discernment, where imaginative foresights are anchored in deep understanding and strategic analysis rather than mere speculation.

2. The Uncertainty Dilemma

At the intersection where the present meets the future, where myriad paths branch out into an unmapped frontier, we encounter the second axis of the Futurist’s Trilemma: the Uncertainty Dilemma. This dilemma represents the volatile territory of unknown variables and the challenge of predicting outcomes amidst the swirling vortex of possibilities. It beckons futurists to wrestle with a constantly morphing reality fraught with disruptions that can render even the most carefully crafted projections obsolete.

The challenge that stands before us is not merely navigating the sea of uncertainties but acknowledging and embracing the inherent fluidity and unpredictability of the future landscape. How can one make viable predictions while remaining adaptive and open to the ever-changing currents of societal, technological, and environmental evolutions?

The Tug of War Between Prediction and Uncertainty

Delving deeper into the Uncertainty Dilemma, we find ourselves in a tug of war between wanting to pinpoint exact trajectories for the future and accepting that the future is a mutable entity, susceptible to sudden changes and unexpected events. This tension beckons a nuanced approach that gracefully balances well-founded predictions with a readiness to recalibrate as the unknown unfolds.

Whether they turn out to be right or wrong, predictions still have inherent value. Engaging with a prediction obliges us to dissect it to investigate the parameters and influences that form its basis. This process inherently fosters critical thinking and a deeper understanding of the relevant issues at hand.

Moreover, even a wrong prediction can be illuminating, helping to highlight unforeseen variables or encouraging a more nuanced understanding of a situation. It necessitates an exploration of alternative outcomes and can foster a mindset that is prepared to respond flexibly to a range of potential futures.

Deciphering the Signals from the Noise

In the complex web of fluctuating trends and emerging phenomena, a crucial aspect of navigating the Uncertainty Dilemma is the ability to sift through the noise to identify significant signals that hint at potential futures. Here, analytical rigor and keen perceptiveness become invaluable assets, aiding in the construction of plausible narratives while remaining attuned to the unexpected shifts that demand a reevaluation of established trajectories.

Embracing the Uncertainty as a Catalyst for Innovation

Yet, within this uncertainty lies an untapped reservoir of potential. By accepting the unpredictable nature of the future, we create a fertile ground for innovation, where fresh perspectives emerge and novel solutions can be forged. The Uncertainty Dilemma, therefore, not only represents a challenge but also offers a vibrant canvas where the richness of diversity and complexity can birth unprecedented innovations.

The Path Forward

As we stand on the threshold of tomorrow, grappling with the Uncertainty Dilemma, it becomes incumbent upon us to foster a mindset that is both grounded in reality and open to adaptability. A mindset that seeks not to control the future rigidly but dances harmoniously with the fluid dynamics of change, steering the vessel of foresight with a hand that is both firm and flexible.

In the evolving dialogue on the Futurist’s Trilemma, we will continue to venture deeper into this rich landscape, progressively building a roadmap that acknowledges the vivid spectrum of possibilities presented by the future, a roadmap shaped with a respectful nod to uncertainty, a critical but open mind, and a spirit ready to harness the unexpected as a force of innovation and transformation.

As we steer forward, we will further delve into the remaining pillar of the Futurist’s Trilemma, the Action Dilemma, synthesizing our journey into a harmonious approach to envisioning and crafting futures replete with potential and grounded in discerning wisdom. Stay tuned as we unravel the nuanced dance between action and contemplation in the vibrant tapestry of futurism.

3. The Action Dilemma

In a world where the sands of time continuously shift, laying a firm groundwork becomes not just a necessity but a Herculean task, bringing us to the pivotal axis of the Futurist’s Trilemma: The Action Dilemma. This final cornerstone urges individuals and organizations to not only envision prospective futures but to engage actively and pragmatically with the realities they foresee. The dilemma here lies in the act of initiating decisive steps, coupled with the dread of potential missteps, in navigating a future rich in uncertainties.

The Action Dilemma is the battlefield where foresight meets execution, where visionary ideas encounter the pragmatic demands of real-world implementation. It is a call to arms, challenging futurists to translate predictions and anticipations into strategies and actions that are both feasible and adaptive.

Walking the Tightrope of Decision-Making

The path of the futurist is akin to walking a tightrope, with the depth of contemplation on one side and the exigency of action on the other. Balancing this delicate act necessitates a deep understanding of the current realities while nurturing a readiness to evolve as the envisaged futures start to unravel. It asks of us not just to be seers but doers, translating vision into tangible action without succumbing to paralysis by analysis.

Cultivating a Responsive Action Plan

As we delve into the practicalities of the Action Dilemma, it becomes imperative to cultivate action plans that are responsive and flexible. This involves forging strategies that can adapt swiftly to emerging trends and unforeseen developments, thus fostering a dynamic interface with the future, where action and reflection function in a symbiotic relationship, continually informing and reshaping each other.

The Courage to Act Amidst Uncertainty

Engaging with the Action Dilemma also demands a degree of courage – the courage to act amidst swirling uncertainties, to make informed gambles rooted in foresight, and to commit to decisions with the awareness that the path might need adjustment as new landscapes emerge on the horizon. It is a courageous embrace of fluidity, giving birth to a dynamic and responsive engagement with the unknown realms of tomorrow.

Framing the Future with Actionable Insights

As we forge onward, the onus is on us to frame the future with actionable insights, marrying foresight with decisive actions that bear the imprint of deep contemplation, a respectful acknowledgment of uncertainties, and a vibrant imagination that fuels innovation.

As a Futurist, it’s easy to get caught up in the technology trends and breakthroughs that will mark our future lives – the amazing advances in devices and concepts, from flying taxis to cryptocurrency.

But life is more than code, supercomputers, and the sciences. Healthy and advancing societies must integrate creativity into the mainstream in two fundamental areas: the creative arts and in support of the digital working world.

Keep in mind, the same technology that is automating jobs out of existence is the same technology that will be creating entirely new business and industry.

Since AI doesn’t have the ability to invent something that currently doesn’t exist, we need to focus on our uniquely human strengths, and that’s where creativity comes into play.

Creative Arts

Creative arts can define and unify a culture. Throughout history, the creative arts have brought people together both physically and emotionally. Art, and the creativity behind it, is a unifying force. That’s why oppressive regimes over the course of history often seek to destroy a community’s revered artistic objects when they try to impose their will and authority.

Creative arts can inform and inspire technology. Before most technological breakthroughs occur, there’s usually a necessary phase of imagination and artistic creativity. For example, I have to think that today’s engineers who are deeply immersed in flying car technology were inspired earlier in their lives by artistic renderings of these vehicles.

And on an even more pragmatic front, the creative arts contribute to the economy. The “cultural and creative industries” (CCI) portion of the world economy is poised to rebound after being decimated by pandemic-induced closures. That’s a good thing for a lot of reasons, including economic. The CCI sector is responsible for nearly 30 million jobs worldwide and it’s the most important employer for young people between the ages of 15 and 29 compared to any other sector.

Creativity in the Larger Work Environment

Not all of us are artists, but outside of the CCI, there will also be a need for creativity and a creative mindset in most industries and business sectors.

Our focus on technology and our dependence on it may be making our workforce and many jobs less creative. Fortunately, employers seem to be trying to resist this trend, often defining relatively straightforward jobs as “creative.” They understand that employees, probably for reasons of job security and self-esteem, don’t want to invest their time and effort in jobs in which it seems they can easily be replaced by technology.

Additionally, employers value the differentiating edge that human creative skills can contribute to design, service levels, and branding, even in the process of conducting digital tasks and the production of basic products.

As the former Chairman of Sony pointed out recently, “We assume that all products of our competitors have basically the same technology, price, performance, and features. Design is the only thing that differentiates one product from another …” Creativity.

The Future is Bright for Creative Skills

With that in mind, how will the definition and nature of creativity evolve as we move into the future? How will it be different even 5-10 years from now than it is today?

As noted above, employers will continue to emphasize the creative aspects of the digital-empowered jobs they post. They will encourage employees to bring creative new approaches to their jobs in order to maintain an engaged workforce and in the hopes of delivering differentiation to their competitive products and services.

Additionally, the more digitized the working environment becomes, the more important it will be to combine – some would say temper – objective calculation and machine-informed projections with human intuition and insight. Computers aren’t visionaries. They lack imagination and emotion.

As long as we have problems, we will always have jobs! And there is no shortage of problems! And as long as work teams and our world itself are made up of human beings, this type of managing, planning, and problem-solving will require the creative human touch.

Implications for our Educational System

In many ways, technology has made us less dependent on gaining knowledge. For example, we don’t need to learn geography, rules of grammar, or math skills, thanks to apps and features in apps. These advances have been a source of equalization among mankind – a very positive trend.

Since to a large extent, knowledge is no longer just for the privileged but for everyone, and can be stored in devices and not our brains, our education system will need to shift from knowledge-based training (how to do something), to the more creative side of work (when to do it or not, why to do it, and ways to do it even better).

Unfortunately, that necessity is at odds with our current education system. In fact, some experts claim the education system is actually “killing creativity” … at a time we need it the most.

Knowledge is merely the starting point of creativity; but unfortunately, it seems to be the endpoint of our education system. Instead, the future of education instruction should encompass creative explorations of “How can we apply this knowledge?” and “What areas of technology can we apply in order to create solutions to this challenge?”

The Need to Teach Creativity

From the earliest grades through graduate school, creativity should not simply be tolerated or encouraged, it should be taught along with related key skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration.

Creativity doesn’t always come naturally. Some students inherently have more of a knack for it than others, just as some students are math whizzes beginning in first grade.

There’s no arguing that technology like AI, robotics, drones, and ever-faster computers will continue to displace tasks, lessen the workload, and force businesses to rework virtually every conceivable job. But rather than merely responding piece-meal with specialized training programs when this happens, it’s time to go back to the fundamentals and add a fourth “R” to our basic education curriculum. In addition to “readin’, writin’, and rithmetic,” we’ll need to teach and promote “resourcefulness.”

If you’ve had the fortune to have a college education and you’re two or more decades removed from the experience, what do you remember about what you learned?

If you’re in the hard science world, with a PhD. in astrophysics and still working in that field, for example, no doubt you remember quite a bit, and you’ve built on it ten-fold during your career.

On the other hand, if you had a liberal arts degree you may find it harder to point to where exactly your education gave you the bits of knowledge you needed to be, say, a politician, a banker, a CEO, a futurist. No doubt throughout your college years you learned and honed some important “soft skills,” like communication, collaboration, and stick-to-it-iveness. But in a way, aren’t those just reinforcements of the lessons we’ve learned since Kindergarten: “Use your words!” “Play nice!” “Don’t quit!”

A while back, I went through the process of analyzing which of my courses in college had the least value throughout my working career.

No, I’m probably not the best example since I was working on an undergraduate engineering major. But I took the classes the college required for me to graduate with a degree in engineering. These included a super important class on how to use a slide rule, Fortran programming (done with punch card machines), and calculus. No, I’ve never used a slide rule since then, and even though I worked as a programmer and solved tons of problems mathematically, I’ve never used Fortran or calculus either.

Our education systems have been built around “just-in-case” learning which ends up being a poor fit for our “just-in-time” business world. Very little of what we learn in college ever gets put to use in today’s business world. We learn tons of great stuff just-in-case we may ever need it in the future.

So, at the risk of oversimplifying:

Just-in-case learning involves backward-facing skills that may or may not be valuable in the future.

At the same time, our just-in-time business world needs the most relevant and state-of-the-art skills possible.

To be fair, everything we learn in college has a way of coloring our thinking and giving us new reference points we’d never get otherwise. But colleges can only teach what they know, and they can’t change curricula on a dime.

There was no Java programming, let alone C/C++ programming, when I was in college. Fortran was the best way to introduce us to the amazing world of computers and programming.

The question remains, though: Are there Fortran- and slide rule-type skills being taught today that will have little or no enduring value in the future?

And more importantly, as college costs escalate and repayment plans extend for
decades, does the usefulness of a college education wear out before the payments end?

Today, knowledge is growing exponentially. In many fields, the useful life of knowledge is now measured in months rather than years. According to Cathy Gonzalez, in her 2004 paper on “The Role of Blended Learning in the World of Technology:

“One of the most persuasive factors is the shrinking half-life of knowledge. The “half-life of knowledge” is the time span from when knowledge is gained to when it becomes obsolete. Half of what is known today was not known 10 years ago. The amount of knowledge in the world has doubled in the past 10 years and is doubling every 18 months according to the American Society of Training and Documentation. To combat the shrinking half-life of knowledge, organizations have been forced to develop new methods of deploying instruction.”

Unlike apprenticeships, where learning to be a plumber or electrician creates real-world value and tangible results, very little of the day-to-day skills needed in the business world are actually taught in the college classroom. So what can we learn from the trades model?

Apprenticeships are on-the-job training. After a basic level of coursework, the employer essentially takes over, ensuring that the skills the student masters will be relevant and valuable.

Could non-trade skills, related to business, marketing, finance, and management, for example, find value in a similar model?

Some do … sort of. Internships in different fields provide college students with a taste of the real world. Student teaching is a rite of passage for aspiring teachers. These brave souls teach real students, and a real teacher at the back of the room will later explain to the teacher-to-be the way things really work.

Spending four years in college to earn a degree is all part of achieving status, while at the same time, demonstrating our ability to learn. Only a relatively small portion of what is learned will hold long-term value.

So is there a better way?

When hiring, employers only attribute 20% to a person’s subject matter expertise and skills. Other deciding factors include things like their ability to “detect and analyse a problem,” “describe a situation,” “be a team player,” and in our current work-from-home environment, “being a highly motivated self-starter is key.”

Organizations that want to hire people with just-in-time learning skills should have a major role and stake in their development.

If a student is going into a business field, does it make sense to integrate their learning into an actual work environment with the likes of Pepsico, Caterpillar, or Pfizer? They will most assuredly receive “just-in-time” business training that reflects today’s needed skills and knowledge.

To be sure, there will never be a one-size-fits-all solution for education in the future.

What I’ve described is just one approach to help ensure what students learn “in school” is relevant when they graduate. We should expect a number of experimental approaches as our tech world attempts to “crack the formula” for future education.

However we do it, 20 years from now, learning will need to be far more relevant, delivered at a far lower price, and done at the “speed of need.”

A few weeks ago a person who I hadn’t met before asked me what my superpower was. As an icebreaker at a networking event, this is a great question to get to know someone. However, since I had never been asked this question before, I must admit, I was caught a bit flatfooted.

Your superpower is the thing you do best, the role that you were put on this Earth to fill. If you don’t have one, it’s something you should focus your attention on. Tapping into it will not only help you personally, but also everyone around you.

No, we aren’t exactly born with superpowers we build them over time. Every company has people who are proficient in what they do, and their proficiency comes from the time, talent, and effort they’ve dedicated to it.

If you’re like most people, your job description has evolved over the past five years. For many, their role today didn’t even exist a short time ago. The workplace of tomorrow will indeed look quite different.

At the same time, our evolving workplace is creating a skills divide. Some jobs require software skills tied to cybersecurity. Others require pattern-matching skills tied to system-related problem solving skills. And still others demand great people skills coupled with a deep understanding of HR law.

We have a large number of jobs that require relatively high-level skills, and many of those jobs will become obsolete in the future as individual tasks are being automated out of existence.

At the same time, every new tool will require a full compliment of updated skills, training, support, sales, and more.

Emerging high tech jobs continue to challenge the status quo because of the steeper-than-normal learning curve. While most employees haven’t been paying attention to the evolving workplace, the half-life of their skills is growing shorter, causing the overall value of their superpower to diminish over time.

With that in mind, here are a few hard-to-teach skills and superpowers that will keep you employable for many decades to come.

1. Gig Management – Managing the “Business of You”

We’re moving quickly into a freelance economy and ironically no traditional schools have felt it to be a skillset important enough to add to their curriculum.

Rather than serving at the mercy of a single company that rarely has your best interest in mind, freelancers have the ability to migrate towards better opportunities, renegotiate salaries, and form both competing and complementary work relationships with businesses and organizations around the world.

That said, it’s not easy to become a highly sought-after freelancer as it requires talent in many areas. Networking, tracking down potential gigs, writing proposals, forming contracts, managing the accounting, sales, scheduling, and project management are all part of the rigorous lifestyle that comes with the territory. But, in the end, skilled freelancers have the ability to control their own destiny, something most workers can only dream of.

Note: Over the coming years there will be a number of reports that say the gig economy is not happening, but those will be very misleading. Freelancers that earn enough money will naturally incorporate for tax purposes, masking the true nature of their operation. Any W2 freelancer, when surveyed, will come across as a traditional worker, even though their behind-the-scenes operation says something totally different.

Gig management will be a career-defining talent and massively important skill for the future.

2. Distraction Management

We live in the most distracted society in all history. In a recent Pew study, 45% of the teens surveyed said they use the Internet “almost constantly.” Another 44% said they go online several times every day.

70% of today’s workers keep their smartphone “within eye contact” at work, and over 50% of people check their phone if they wake up during the night.

The average smartphone user checks their phone over 220 times a day. During peak times this jumps up to once every six or seven seconds. Total addicts will actually jack-in over 900 times in a day and several reports have revealed incidents where young drama-junkies have been hospitalized from exhaustion because “fear of missing out” caused them to stop sleeping altogether.

Since office workers typically take around 25 minutes to recover from interruptions before returning to their original task, it becomes a far greater challenge for people to make meaningful accomplishments.

Further complicating the situation, a 2015 study showed that distractions have a way of causing even more distractions. Workers who get interrupted by text messages are significantly more likely to ‘self-interrupt’ – allowing their attention to ricochet from thought to thought while losing their ability to fully concentrate on any one thing.

One recent study showed 53% of people would rather give up their sense of smell than their smartphone. One in three would give up sex before their phone.

But let’s not forget TV time. During peak hours, over 70% of the bandwidth for the Internet is dedicated to video streaming with Netflix and YouTube sucking up over 62% of the entire bandwidth in North America.

The average American spends over 5.5 hours a day consuming some form of video content.

So after all of that, how much time do you really have left for your job, your family and friends, and actually experiencing the world around you? Sadly, it’s only going to get worse.

For these reasons, distraction management will be one of the most critical skills for successful people to master in the future.

3. Relationship Management

Our work, social, and family life is all formed around relationships.

The only way the human race will survive is by people forming relationships and having children. Yet there are powerfully few schools that do a good job teaching this subject even though there’s been over a million books written on the topic.

Social media relationships, something that never even existed 20 years ago, now consumes the vast majority of our relationship-building time. And our expectations from a “good” relationship has vastly changed over the past two decades.

Digital connection services have done more than just change how we find the perfect romance, they’ve changed how we network, form business deals, and make a sale. Keep in mind, it wasn’t all that long ago when most relationships began with a smile and a handshake, rather than a click or a swipe.

In the 1990s, British anthropologist Robin Dunbar claimed that the number of people you can manage strong relationships with was around 150. This became known as the Dunbar Number. However, social media has somewhat blurred his entire theory.

In spite of our ability to loosely connect with thousands, even millions online, new research from Dunbar concludes we’re only able to maintain a small number, at most five, close friendships at one time.

People who understand the constantly morphing values and techniques for building and managing relationships will be a hot commodity in the future.

4. Relevancy Management

How relevant are you today? What are the talent and skills that will make and keep you relevant in your profession, company, work team, and among your peers?

Relevancy goes far deeper than your work history and current credentials. Relevancy is all about your willingness to change and adapt. People who are resilient, flexible, and resourceful are much more valuable than even the best technicians today.

What is that unique or special contribution that you bring to the table?

What is the thing that separates you from all others in the company?

What are you known for, and is that what people want?

Do you have a special talent for dealing with people?

Are you forward thinking with an overall sense of what the future holds?

Are you decisive, able to make the tough calls when others tend to hesitate?

Do you have the ability to make sense out of even the most complex situations?

When presented with new tools, systems, processes, or management, how quickly are you able to adapt?

Managing relevancy is unique talent with very few current guidelines, but those who instinctively have it will know how and when to adapt.

5. Managing Your Awareness

How do you stay up to date on the latest information? Who are the thought leaders in your area of expertise and how do you stay current on their work?

The Internet is a massively complex tool that can be channeled to improve your awareness of virtually any topic.

While the average American is consuming information 12 hours and 7 minutes every day, how much of what you consume is truly germane to your area of expertise?

We now have thousands of possible information channels for even the most micro-niche areas of interest and those who manage to carve out the right combination of newsfeeds will find themselves in driver seat of their own career path.

6. Managing Your Tribe (Fan Club Management)

Going beyond personal relationships is the tribes we associate with. I like to frame this thinking around the idea of fan clubs.

Everyone has people that care about them, their own personal fan club. Our ability to grow, study, and interact with these people is a powerful tool that can be leveraged in many ways.

Each new connection intensifies the network effect, adding to our overall value as an individual. Over time, the value of our personal network in tomorrow’s hyper-connected world will become far more quantifiable, and by extension, more valuable than any formulas we use to measure influence today.

It’s rare that people become famous without effort. It typically requires effort, usually sustained effort over a long period of time. Managing a personal fan club is all part of the work that prepares people to climb their own ladder of success, and our ability to master the tools for managing our own fan club will largely determine where we end up in life.

7. Managing our Digital Toolbox

It’s much more than just knowing the tools and how to use them, it’s about knowing which tool to use in which situation.

Our choice of technology defines who we are and our ability to function in an increasingly technology-dependent world.

The very first Apple iPhone entered the world in 2007. Since then, new tools have been appearing on a daily basis. So what should we be paying attention to, and what can we dismiss?

With sensors becoming a ubiquitous part of everyday living we will soon be wearing smart shoes, sleeping on smart pillows, eating smart food, with smart spoons, while watching our children play with their smart toys.

Very soon we will be downloading apps for our drones, our smart houses, our pets, our cars, our clothes, and even our imaginary friends.

Our relationship with our personal technology will continue to be an ongoing challenge and improving skills in this area will give us a distinct advantage.

8. Personal Brand Management

A personal brand is really another way of describing your reputational portfolio.

Being successful means setting yourself apart, and you’ll need a personal brand that defines who you are and who you want to become. That involves building a reputation, trust, and a following. The impression you project about yourself is crucial for finding the best workplace culture fit and for inspiring confidence in your coworkers, clients, and managers

Working with a team of mentors, advisors, or trusted friends, start by auditing your online footprint. This will include all images, posts, videos, connections and correspondence. Since a personal brand is all about what others think, it’s critical to assess how others are interpreting your brand.

Your goal is to ensure your image comes across as professional, polished, and appropriate, both now or in the future.

Mastering this skill is not a one-and-done activity. Your personal brand will need to be tweaked and managed on an ongoing basis.

9. Communication Management

In the book “The Female Brain,” author Louann Brizendine stated that women use 20,000 words per day while men only use 7,000. However, that wasn’t true. There was no study that actually showed those results.

Since then, one study showed that women speak 16,215 words per day on average and men 15,669 words per day. Statistically there’s no difference between genders, but people who speak more generally have an advantage over those with less practice.

Communication is an essential ingredient in all of our lives, but too much or too little can have devastating effects.

With life happening at a far greater pace and new communication channels springing to life in games, social media, and smartphone apps, people often stress over not keeping up with their friends and family. And when they turn things off, they suffer even greater anxiety over feeling left out.

Finding effective ways of managing our communication channels is a critical skill to master in the future.

10. Privacy Management

What exactly does privacy mean?

Following the Cambridge Analytica scandal that forced Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to testify before congress, privacy has become a hot topic in the online world.

Privacy and transparency live on opposite ends of the information spectrum, but they’re both part of the huge ethical issue that falls under the banner of privacy.

Drone privacy is different than social media privacy, which is different than online retailer privacy, Internet of Things privacy, big data privacy, email privacy, and snooping-around-in-my-business privacy.

The landmark EU court decision granting the “right to be forgotten” has been replaced by a more manageable “right of erasure” in 2014. This ruling has been one of the foundational privacy rights granted by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

In practice, the “right to be forgotten” was always more about the “right to be favorably remembered.” People don’t like being the subject of a smear campaign and naturally want some control over having it removed.

For this reason, GDPR is becoming an important part of managing our lives.

People can often derive significant benefits from sharing their personal details as they take advantage of relevant and useful services online. However, once collected, businesses often exploit and monetize personal information, leaving people exposed and placing their information in predatory danger.

Yes, protecting and enforcing privacy is an added burden for business, but a lack of privacy creates risk for users and reduces trust. Trust plays a key role in virtually every form of innovation.

Understanding both sides of this equation will be a critical skill for future generations. Your value as an employee will rise dramatically by having a nuanced understanding of GDPR and the overall ramifications of personal privacy.

11. Modern Time Management

The most precious commodity in everyone’s life is still time. You can ponder it, over-schedule it, spend it with others, account for every second of it, make others account for it, squander it, or simply act as if it doesn’t exist. But so far we’ve not found a way to stretch it, reverse it, or buy extra bags full of it when we run out.

Time management systems of the past will continue to morph, shift, and change to accommodate lifestyles and business demands of the future.

Every item on the list above boils down to creating efficiencies, and we can’t possibly create these efficiencies without finding better ways to manage our time.

Final Thoughts

Yes, the key word in this list is “management.” It will be up to us to manage every aspect of our increasingly complicated lives.
Is eleven the right number? This was not intended to be an all-inclusive list of skills for tomorrow. Over time, many more will be needed.

My goal was to draw attention to some of the most critical ones, the ones that currently seem to be overlooked today.

But I’d love to hear your thoughts on this topic. Let me know what I’m missing and where I may be off base. The ideas of the many are almost always greater than the ideas of the few.
