On one hand, reduced human population growth could lead to a significant decrease in consumption-driven environmental degradation. Fewer humans means reduced demand for resources, potentially easing pressures on ecosystems, reducing carbon emissions, and slowing climate change.

However, the environmental costs of robot production and operation must also be considered. The manufacturing of robots and AI systems requires significant resources, including rare earth metals and energy-intensive processes. The operation of these systems also consumes energy, which, depending on the source, could contribute to carbon emissions and other forms of pollution.

Yet, there’s also potential for robots to contribute to more sustainable economic systems. Robots could be designed and programmed with sustainability as a primary goal, potentially making production processes more efficient and less wasteful than human-driven systems. They could be used to optimize resource use, manage waste more effectively, and even aid in environmental restoration projects.

Moreover, a robot-driven economy might allow for a fundamental restructuring of our economic systems away from the current model of continuous growth and consumption. Without the need to create jobs for a growing population, we might be able to design economic systems that prioritize sustainability and environmental protection over pure economic growth.

Ethical and Philosophical Questions

The prospect of robots replacing the economic roles of a growing human population raises profound ethical and philosophical questions about the nature of human existence and our place in the world.

In a society less dependent on human labor, we may need to reevaluate how we ascribe value to human life. Traditionally, much of a person’s perceived value to society has been tied to their productive capacity. In a world where robots handle most production, we may need to develop new frameworks for understanding and appreciating the intrinsic value of human life, independent of economic output.

This shift would likely require a fundamental redefinition of the relationship between work, identity, and fulfillment. For centuries, work has been a primary source of identity and a key means of finding purpose and meaning in life. As traditional forms of work become less available or necessary, we’ll need to find new ways to construct identity and find fulfillment. This might lead to a greater emphasis on personal growth, creativity, relationships, and community involvement as sources of meaning and self-worth.

The ethical considerations of replacing human population growth with robots are complex. On one hand, it could be seen as a solution to many of the challenges associated with overpopulation, including resource scarcity and environmental degradation. On the other hand, it raises questions about the fundamental nature of human societies and whether a world with fewer humans is desirable, regardless of economic efficiency.

There are also important considerations around the autonomy and rights of robots themselves. As AI systems become more sophisticated, we may need to grapple with questions of robot consciousness, rights, and moral standing. This could lead to entirely new fields of robot ethics and robot rights, further complicating our understanding of society and social responsibility.

Families will rest easier knowing their loved ones are getting the best possible care.

Final Thoughts

The interplay between declining birth rates and increasing automation presents one of the most complex and consequential challenges of our time. As we’ve explored, the potential for robots to fill the economic roles traditionally held by a growing human population has far-reaching implications for our economic systems, social structures, environment, and even our understanding of what it means to be human.

The path forward is not clearly defined, and potential outcomes range from utopian to dystopian visions of the future. In a utopian scenario, robots could free humans from tedious labor, allowing for a society focused on creativity, personal growth, and fulfillment. Resources could be more evenly distributed, and we could see unprecedented advances in science, art, and quality of life. Environmental pressures could be reduced, leading to a more sustainable world.

However, a dystopian outcome is equally possible if this transition is not managed carefully. We could see extreme inequality, with wealth concentrated in the hands of a few robot owners, while the majority of humanity struggles with unemployment and loss of purpose. Social unrest, environmental degradation from unchecked robot production, and a loss of human autonomy to increasingly powerful AI systems are all potential risks.

The reality is likely to fall somewhere between these extremes, and the outcome will depend largely on the choices we make today and in the coming years. This underscores the critical need for proactive planning and policy-making to navigate this transition successfully.

We need interdisciplinary collaboration between economists, technologists, ethicists, environmental scientists, and policymakers to develop comprehensive strategies for this new world. This might include rethinking our education systems to prepare people for a robot-dominated economy, developing new economic models that can account for non-human labor, creating policies to ensure fair distribution of robot-generated wealth, and establishing ethical guidelines for the development and deployment of AI and robotics.

Ultimately, the question “Will robots replace the kids we’re not having?” is not just about economics or technology. It’s about the kind of society we want to create and the role we envision for humanity in an increasingly automated world. As we stand at this crossroads, it’s crucial that we approach these challenges with wisdom, foresight, and a commitment to creating a future that benefits all of humanity.

In 2015, I was speaking at a Quebec Transportation Authority event in Montreal on the future of transportation. The attendees included transportation experts from around the world, including Colombia Transportation Minister Natalia Abello Vives, whom I happened to sit next to at lunch.

Meeting her was a unique opportunity for me to discuss one of my favorite topics – the Darién Gap, a 60-mile-long, nearly impassible stretch of jungle, mountains, and rivers between the nations of Colombia and Panama that stands in the way of land vehicles traveling between South America to North America. About half of the Darién Gap lies in each country.

In 1937, the Pan-American Highway agreement was signed by 14 countries, including Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Canada, and the United States. These nations agreed to build a highway that would extend from the southern tip of South America to the northern tip of Alaska – a 19,000-mile-long continuous highway.

Eventually, all the sections were built – except through the Darién Gap.

The Historical Obstacles

Back in 2015, Minister Abello explained that the Darién Gap was an environmentally sensitive piece of land, and it would be impossible to build a highway through it. She has a point. Much of the land along the completed highway segments on either end of the Gap has been stripped of trees and other vegetation to allow for cattle farming.

The last major effort to build a continuous road through the Darién Gap was in the 1970s when the U.S. proposed to put up two-thirds of the cost. Environmentalists concerned with deforestation and health experts concerned about the spread of hoof-and-mouth disease raised their respective objections, and the issue was dropped.

The More Recent Obstacles

The Darién Gap, connecting Yaviza Panama on the north end and Turbo Colombia on the south side, can be traversed on foot in a four-to-six-day, very arduous, dangerous trek. The once-desolate jungle is no longer a no-man’s land. A steady stream of migrants from Haiti, Venezuela, and other countries make their way through it as they try to reach the southern border of the U.S.

Along the way, they’re preyed upon by drug smugglers, exploited by both right- and left-wing guerilla groups, and threatened by deadly insects and snakes. Bad people and bad things seem to be attracted to the lawless nooks and crannies of the Darién Gap.

But while the Colombian government may have been (and maybe still is) open to the idea of a road or other means of transit through this stretch, apparently, the Panamanian government and the people of Panama are less excited about it. They see the Darién Gap as a fortunate buffer that keeps the criminals on the Colombian side, even if it’s increasingly porous.

It would be interesting to know the U.S. government’s current position on the completion of the Pan-American Highway, given how it could make migration from South America easier.

Bridging Around the Gap?

I asked Minister Abello if all the options had been explored for spanning the Darién Gap. As we discussed some engineering concepts, she suggested that building a series of bridges over the ocean waters off the coast was a possibility.

Of course! If you can’t go through it, go around it! We could call it the Darién Gap Bypass.

Currently, the longest bridge-tunnel system in the world is the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, which is 34 miles long. The bridge around the Darien Gap would need to be roughly twice that long.

I have no doubt engineers could figure out how to construct this massive series of bridges, and yes, the cost would be astronomical. The bigger issue would be the political pros and cons of making it easier for illegal aliens and drug trafficking problems to make their way through Central and South America as well as the southern borders of the U.S.

Costs and Benefits

Is there a good reason to span the Darién Gap or bypass it with a bridge system?

Would a completed Pan-American Highway promote commerce between North and South America, for example? Perhaps, but the vast majority of intercontinental trade with South America happens by ship, and it’s doubtful that it would be economically feasible to replace that with truck traffic to reach North America.

However, there may be many other ways of looking at this. A single truck from Central America could make dozens of stops along the way into South America, replenishing supplies at all the businesses along the way. From a micro-economic viewpoint, truckloads of goods traveling 100-200 miles could cause local economies to grow in ways we may not understand.

And what about the psychic pleasure of being able to take that uninterrupted 19,000-mile road trip? Is that reason enough to make this kind of expenditure? That kind of expedition would quickly make its way to my bucket list, and I’m sure I’m not alone in that.

But there are bigger and better reasons for taking this on.

Moonshots

We seem to have grown beyond the idea of doing big things “because we can.” Taking moonshots for the sake of simply achieving moonshots just doesn’t seem right these days for many of the pragmatists among us.

Just over 60 years ago, President Kennedy inspiringly justified the nascent NASA mission to the moon, saying, “We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard.” How long ago and far away that seems today.

But doing the hard things is only part of the reason for building the Darién Gap Bypass. Some incredible advances in science, manufacturing, and engineering have been tertiary results of seemingly unrelated major endeavors, including the space program.

The Darién Gap Bypass wouldn’t be just a long, expensive bridge. It could lead to major breakthroughs in bridge design, metallurgy, off-shore platform design, and many other less-apparent areas that could make a huge difference over the coming decades.

At the moment, though, we have a lot of immediacy on our plates, and we’re not willing to invest in seemingly impossible tasks and moonshots. We seem obsessed with solving the problems of the day, paying scant attention to advancing civilization as a whole.

But let’s hope we get back to a time and mindset where we stop living solely for the day and do a few hard things that have the potential to vastly improve our future.

Can the future of war possibly be bloodless?

We certainly seemed to be headed in that direction before Russia apparently dusted off a World War II playbook and sent ground troops into Ukraine earlier this year. The Ukraine Army has been forced to valiantly respond in kind.

The U.S. and other countries have tried to counter Russian aggression by supplying weapons and supplies to Ukraine and waging a de facto financial war against Russia.

On its face, waging a financial war seems less painful than sending U.S. soldiers, sailors, Marines, and airmen to join the fray … but it’s certainly not painless. We can only hope it’s more painful for Russia than it is for us. The jury is still out on that.

Elements of the Financial War against Russia

Most of us silently relish the sight of seizures of Russian oligarch yachts and other property. Granted, the goal of these appropriations isn’t to topple the Russian economy but to put pressure on these supposedly influential people who might be able to restrain Putin. I haven’t seen any evidence that this is working.

Cutting off Russia’s oil revenue hasn’t been a terribly successful strategy either. It seems to be an application of the socioeconomic Golden Rule: “Whoever has the gold rules.” Russia has oil and gas, and countries around the world can’t do without it.

To the extent that countries have marginally reduced their imports of Russian oil and gas, the country has found willing buyers in other nations. And the turmoil and uncertainty in the market have increased world energy prices so Russia is earning more rubles than before for the energy they produce.

Nearly all major U.S. and global companies have disengaged from Russian markets. From Alphabet, to Disney, to McDonalds, several hundred major companies are exiting or suspending operations in Russia. Depending on the sector, this can be a fairly potent economic weapon.

On the one hand, lack of access to consumer goods and entertainment primarily will affect citizens and likely not do much to affect the regime’s decisions – unless those citizens rise up en masse to protest their sudden lack of access to a western lifestyle instead of rallying around the flag, which unfortunately seems to be more the case.

On the other hand, the Russian exodus of international energy companies, which were some of the first to be implemented, will be more impactful as these remove some of the critical expertise and funding that supports energy exploration and capital investments.

Finally, sanctions that prevent Russia from engaging in global banking systems will have an impact down the road and will turn Russia into a more insular country, not as extreme as in North Korea but moving in that direction.

Because of all of these factors, the future of Russia and its economy will be marginalized for the foreseeable future. Any hope of recovery for the country and its standing in the international economic community will depend on who replaces Putin and when.

But What About the Sanctioners?

Given the apparently limited impact of sanctions on influencing Russia’s territorial ambitions, we have to ask whether this form of financial warfare is a viable strategy, given the pain, the sanctions are inflicting on the nations who are applying the pressure.

To an arguable extent, the sanctions are cutting into profits for major companies, adding to energy insecurity in many European nations, helping drive consumer energy prices to historic levels, and contributing to inflation. All of this could prove to be the tipping point to send the world into a recession, which could trigger social/political unrest that creates even more uncertainty.

If these Russian sanctions had been imposed in a “normal” time, when economies weren’t recovering from the labor and global supply chain issues stemming from COVID, for example, they might have been far less painful to the inflictors. But that’s not the hand we were dealt. And who’s to say what the new normal will be, for that matter.

The History of Economic Warfare

Gaining influence and trying to gain an advantage in the international arena through economic means isn’t new.

This fascinating account documents how nations over the last few centuries used economic tools like embargos, blockades, currency devaluations, and other means to gain an economic edge over another. In the 18th and 19th centuries, this even entailed the use of military resources, ships primarily, to secure monopolistic trade routes at the expense of other nations.

This might be the first significant time, though, that sanctions were used on this scale to not only weaken an economy but drive leadership changes or at least changes of heart. We’ll see more attempts like this in the future and we’ll learn from the current experience how to do it even more effectively… maybe!

The Future of War

What we see in the destroyed cities and lives in Ukraine seems other-worldly to us. Let’s not get used to it. I can only hope this will be the last time we’ll see this kind of blatant, grind-it-out invasion on this scale. I doubt that Russia is eager to do it again as they’re learning the limits of this strategy.

Instead, bad state actors will take a page not from WWII but further back from the annals of 17th and 18th-century economic warfare in order to subjugate a nation or region. We and they will also learn from the West’s experience with the Russian sanctions, specifically:

1. Personal sanctions against political and economic leaders don’t have an impact. In fact, wealthy people around the world have been and will continue to plot ways to preserve, hide, and encrypt their wealth to avoid being targeted like the oligarchs in Russia.
2. Broader sanctions like access to financial markets, isolating businesses from international markets and expertise, and engaging in currency wars will be more thoughtfully planned out to predict likely responses and secondary impacts. They will be used more selectively and from a position of strength (which was not the case with regard to oil sanctions on Russia, for example).
3. The retrenchment from globalization to regional/national economies, driven in large part by supply chain challenges but also the concern about being held hostage by resource-rich potential despots, will make many economic sanction tools less effective.
4. The U.S. will emerge as the major active international economic player, meaning the U.S. Dollar will be the world currency of choice for the foreseeable future. This will be true as long as the Western bloc of nations as a whole can outperform China’s economy, which has taken a hit due to its oddly draconian COVID management approach. An internationally accepted cryptocurrency might supplant the U.S. Dollar at some point but that timeframe is slipping given recent turbulence in that market and the challenge of gaining international consensus on a single currency. All of this makes the U.S. a more formidable economic warfare foe in the years ahead.
5. While not the topic of this blog, cyber warfare will become the second leg of our bloodless warfare model, equally as critical as economic weapons.

We can only hope that Russia has learned some lessons of their own – namely that bloody infantry and artillery conflicts must once and for all be put in the past. But never say never. The advantage in war always tends to go to those who are willing to do what their opposition is not.

That said, the nature of war is definitely changing. If this approach proves to be successful, and it’s still too early to tell, we will see nations shift to a different kind of arms race – to accumulate global economic and cyber warfare advantage.

However, if war does become more “civilized,” we will have more wars – more frequent and more targeted.

We may not even call them “wars” anymore as we attempt to euphonize these battles with less war-sounding terminology. The immediate goal will be to extend influence as a precursor to extending boundaries.
