The rise of IoT will also see more appliances being controlled by voice commands or through mobile apps. Everything from refrigerators to washing machines could provide status updates, alerts for problems, and even automated maintenance reminders. Additionally, smart homes will become more interactive. Augmented Reality (AR) could play a part in this, for instance, overlaying a cooking tutorial on your smart stove or displaying your day’s schedule on your bathroom mirror.

These spaces will provide a conducive environment for remote work, fostering collaboration and promoting a sense of community among residents. They could be designed as designated rooms or areas within the building that are fully equipped with workstations, high-speed internet, meeting rooms, and even amenities like a coffee station or a relaxation zone.

On the technological front, these docks might include systems to automatically receive delivery drones guided by GPS and autonomous navigation systems. Once a drone lands, the dock can secure the package and automatically recharge its battery before it departs for the next delivery.

As our reliance on drone technology increases, it’s clear that future home designs must consider the integration of these systems. By including drone security and drone delivery systems, future homes can offer enhanced safety and convenience, meeting future homeowners’ changing needs and expectations.

6. Biophilic Design

Biophilia, a term popularized by biologist Edward O. Wilson, describes the innate human attraction to nature and living things. Biophilic design is an approach to architecture that seeks to connect building occupants more closely to nature. They may feature orientation that captures or avoids the sun’s heat depending on the climate, as well as shade features or landscaping to control temperature.

Final Thoughts

We live on a finite planet with a finite atmosphere, and we have a finite quantity of resources at our disposal. At certain points in history, our human capabilities scale past the point of reason, where our busy work begins to take an excessive toll on planet Earth.

That’s exactly what’s happening in the concrete industry. But there’s a very good story is percolating to the top of the construction world.

Traditional concrete, the building material made from a geopolymer known as Portland cement, isn’t glamorous. It’s not high-tech. It’s not taking us to space. It’s not forming the metaverse – it’s quite the opposite of the metaverse, in fact! Instead, concrete is literally providing the foundation for our real world and for virtually every finished, hardened structure we need to build – our roads, buildings, bridges, and more.

Contrary to popular belief, Portland cement doesn’t owe its name to the beautiful port city in Oregon. Two hundred years ago, the inventor of an earlier version of the material named it after Portland stone, a similar-looking product that was quarried on the Isle of Portland in England.

Today’s concrete has evolved over the years to include lime/clay cement combined with aggregates like clay, shale, sand, iron ore, bauxite, fly ash, and/or slag. Concrete, in the end, is essential that Portland aggregate cement product + water + sand + gravel … all natural resources.

As of 2021, 4.4 billion tons of concrete were produced worldwide, and that number is projected to increase by 25% by 2050.

Researchers are perfecting a variety of eco-friendly, green concrete alternatives made from unique combinations of geopolymer cement components. What makes the resulting concrete “green” compared to traditional concrete products is the fact that each, to one degree or another in the manufacturing process:

1. Uses recyclable material
2. Utilizes a less energy-intensive manufacturing process
3. Generates a lower amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) and wastewater

In addition to those benefits, many varieties of green concrete are proving to be more durable, stronger, and less expensive. They can also be set up quicker with less shrinkage.

All of these are positive attributes, so what’s not to love?

A Better Recipe of Raw Materials

Natural sand is a critical material used in traditional concrete. Natural sand, though, is a limited resource, and it’s also used in the fracking process. This material is mined from open pits, inland dunes, river beds, and other geologically fragile environments. There’s a similar story with gravel, which is another aggregate and another critical component of Portland cement-based concrete.

In contrast, many varieties of geopolymers that make up green concrete use natural fibers and industrial waste products like waste glass sand, fly ash from coal-fired power plants, and blast furnace slag, a by-product of iron and steel production.

Additional research is being done on integrating aggregate from demolition waste and other recycled concrete, forming a closed loop for this important construction material.

A Better Use of Our Energy Resources

At the risk of getting into the weeds and dredging up more detail than you ever wanted to know, green concrete also reduces energy consumption.

First of all, sand mining is very energy-intensive, and any reduction in that activity is a big step in the right direction. Second, the heating process for making traditional Portland cement requires massive amounts of energy. But formulating green cement with fly ash, for example, reduces that significantly.

Reducing Greenhouse Gases

Due to its chemical processes, Portland cement manufacturing accounts for 7% of the global release of CO2, according to the International Energy Agency. If the concrete industry were a country, it would be the third-largest CO2 emitter, right behind the U.S. and China.

Alternatively, green geopolymer cement production can reduce this by 90%. That’s pretty stark, not to mention compelling.

Making A Better Cement Product

As a result, these new green processes and formulations are not only making concrete in a better way, they’re making concrete better.

• Using natural fibers like hemp or bamboo for reinforcement instead of synthetic or steel fibers is not only cheaper but also adds tensile strength and reduces corrosion.
• Lead slag is proving to be an ideal additive to green concrete to reduce drying shrinkage.
• Green concrete containing waste glass sand (as opposed to natural sand) has been shown to be stronger and less porous than other varieties.
• Finally, thanks to many of the features mentioned above, green concrete promises to be less expensive than traditional Portland cement-based concrete.

The next step for this technology is to incorporate it into 3D-printed buildings and other structures, reducing waste during construction. It’s too early to say if construction will ever be considered a “green industry,” but it’s definitely taking major steps in that direction.

Focusing on the Positive

This is one of the best good-news stories I’ve had a chance to talk about in a long time. Futurists tend to spend a lot of time exploring new frontiers and breakthrough industries and less time exploring the implications of advances in current practices that can be just as or even more impactful in the long run.

And too many observers and pundits tend to focus on the seemingly insurmountable challenges all around us instead of rolling up their sleeves and picking away at today’s problems.

The emergence of green concrete demonstrates that doing the right thing from a sustainability perspective doesn’t mean we have to compromise the quality of life or, in this case, the quality of building.

We need more of these kinds of breakthroughs and more researchers working in big areas like this to help ensure our world is on the best possible trajectory into the future.

Broadly speaking, the primary energy sources globally fall into three categories: fossil fuels (oil, coal, and natural gas), renewables (wind, solar, geothermal, hydro, biomass), and nuclear.

Our future prosperity depends on our ability to transition from the first category to alternative sources and discover and adopt new processes to safely and efficiently tap them.

We will be up to the task, and the ultimate endpoint will be an amazing new form of nuclear power generation.

But first, let’s look at our options.

Fossil Fuels

More than 78% of the energy we use in the U.S. comes from fossil fuels. For many reasons, we’ll grow less and less dependent on them in the future.

Many oil and natural gas-producing nations have politicized the availability of these resources on the global market, reducing the certainty of availability and causing tremendous price fluctuations. European countries especially are scrambling to reduce this dependence.

Sustainability and climate change concerns related to fossil fuels, especially coal, are adding pressure to transition away from them even before we use them up, or the cost of extracting them becomes prohibitive.

Also, we can’t count on fossil fuels forever. While we technically may never “run out,” oil and gas production has likely peaked or will soon peak, meaning it will become increasingly difficult to retrieve these resources cost-effectively. At some point, economic factors and the increasing price advantage of alternatives will drive fossil fuels to a dwindling fraction of the total market.

Renewables

We’re making strides with renewable energy production thanks to incremental technology breakthroughs in energy storage and transmission. Renewables account for 12.5% of U.S. energy usage, and this number will continue to creep up, but renewables will never be the dominant energy source for reasons I’ll discuss below.

Renewables, on the surface, appear to be the ideal solution since, by definition, producing renewable energy doesn’t deplete the source. The amount of sunlight, water, wind, thermal energy, and biomaterial isn’t reduced or at least remains extremely plentiful throughout these production processes.

A significant challenge for renewables, though, is the fact that we as a society want invisible energy. We want it to be there when we need it, but we’d rather not see it being generated or transmitted. And as renewables expand, we’ll “see” a lot more of it. That’s why today we’re noting the politicized backlash to encroaching wind and solar farms, for example.

Sure, people are accustomed to seeing a coal-fired power plant if they happen to drive past one on the city’s outskirts. But too many people still wince at fields of wind turbines covering scenic vistas. Soon they’ll also see massive floating turbines offshore of their favorite ocean beaches.

We’re probably less than a generation away from reaching the limit in terms of the omnipresence of renewables infrastructure we’re willing to accept.

Nuclear

Nuclear generation accounts for 8.9% of the energy we use. It recently slipped to third place, following renewables. While transitions in the power industry are slow, in less than 15 years, nuclear will have shifted back into second place, and within a few decades, it will supplant fossil fuels as our primary source of energy.

We currently rely on uranium to fuel our nuclear reaction processes, but over the next decade or two, we’ll follow India’s lead and work towards thorium-based reactor systems. These systems, which utilize thorium and fluoride salts, are more expensive to build, but the advantages of thorium reactors are significant, as I’ll discuss below.

All in all, though, whether a nuclear power plant is uranium or thorium-based, nuclear technology overcomes nearly all the concerns we identified for both fossil fuel and renewable power generation.

Capacity? Check.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, nuclear power plants have the highest capacity of all types of power plants – meaning they stay online longer and run more steadily than any other energy production option today.

Efficiency? Check.

Thorium reactors have efficiency levels as high as 98% compared to 5% for current uranium-based technologies, placing them well above fossil fuel and renewables systems in this area. The same analysis points out that pound for pound, thorium produces twice as much energy as uranium fission processes.

Geopolitical impact? Check.

Uranium reserves are spread across the world. With the understanding that these reserves vary in quality and accessibility, of the top 10 countries with the most reserves, India and Canada lead the way. Several Eastern European countries are in the mix too, along with a few African nations. China rounds out the top ten, and the U.S. stands at #16. It’s not an ideal scenario, but it’s an improvement compared to the location of oil and gas reserves. India, the U.S., Australia, and Canada are estimated to have the highest reserves of thorium. Additionally, we can sleep a bit better since thorium is much more difficult to weaponize.

Infrastructure Footprint? Check.

The Department of Energy has determined that a nuclear fission facility that’s typically located on 1 square mile produces the same amount of energy as a windfarm that takes up 360 times more space and a photovoltaic power plant that takes up 75 times more space.

Our scenic vistas and ocean views can mostly remain unspoiled.

Raw Material Depletion? Check.

The world has roughly two hundred years’ worth of uranium at current prices and usage rates. But technological advances in efficient use, processing, and reusing of uranium are on the horizon that could extend this significantly. Higher prices will unlock even more of the material.

And then there’s seawater. Seawater contains minute portions of uranium, but there’s enough there to extend this depletion scenario by tens of thousands of years and even longer since seawater-based uranium is continually replenished by runoff from the land. Researchers are working diligently to develop cost-effective ways to capture uranium from seawater. For these reasons, we will likely have plenty of time, even without the transition to thorium.

There’s estimated to be three times more thorium available in the world than uranium. It tends to be found closer to the surface in more dense quantities, making extraction easier and safer, although possibly lending itself to strip mining techniques.

Safety? Check.

It’s inaccurate and, frankly, very lazy to simply dismiss the prospects of nuclear power generation because of the incidents at Chernobyl, Fukushima, and Three Mile Island. Yes, Chernobyl and Fukushima were disasters that we should do whatever it takes to ensure they never happen again. As for Three Mile Island, the cause was operator and system error, but there were no health impacts for workers or members of the nearby public and no environmental damage. The same can’t be said for the typical oil refinery explosion.

We’re continuing to see advances in uranium-based nuclear plant coolant and fusion-containing technology. Thorium systems will prove far safer yet, given that the reactions are self-regulating and not self-sustaining.

Environmental Impact. Getting Better.

Nuclear plants will never be as environmentally benign as renewables-based energy production. Nuclear waste disposal is a concern, but new innovations are significantly improving this situation too. Thorium systems should resolve this matter even further. Thorium is used up far more efficiently in the reaction process, so waste is minimal compared to uranium systems. What waste remains is radioactive for only 500 years compared to 10,000 years for uranium. There is also speculation that the 500 years can be reduced substantially with a few more advancements.

Closing Thoughts

I haven’t mentioned two future forms of power generation: space-based solar power and nuclear fusion. Both are in development and likely a considerable time away.

As we think through the options, we will have sufficient, safe energy sources far into the future. Except for very specialized uses, fossil fuels will go the way of the dinosaurs from whence they came. Renewables will always be a welcomed niche contributor to our power grids, but we won’t be able to scale them to the extent that they’ll be our dominant source.

Our future is nuclear … in spite of Hollywood and misguided environmental activists who choose to get their science from that world. These phenomena slowed society’s progress in developing and benefitting from nuclear power by decades and ironically perpetuated the proliferation of far more dangerous and polluting energy production in the meantime.

We’ll think more clearly about this very soon.

U.S. government analysts have predicted that between now and 2050, energy demand worldwide will increase by almost 50%, due primarily to the use of electric cars. And by that time, renewable energy will need to overtake the share of energy we receive from traditional sources like coal, oil, and natural gas. But it will take a lot more than wind-farms and solar farms to do it.

Many experts believe solar power is our energy source of the future. It would be an understatement of the highest order to say that the sun couldn’t meet our energy needs if we could effectively figure out how to capture its energy. The sun emits 386 billion million gigawatts of energy on to the Earth’s surface, while we only consume a few thousand megawatts.

We’ve only Scratched the Surface with Solar

Our approach to solar so far has focused on trying to catch those rays that reach the earth with strategically placed solar panels. These panels are becoming more efficient thanks to the new materials, smaller components, and their ability to track the sun across the sky. At the same time, larger and larger solar farms are being deployed on land and on sea.

But that’s just a solar drop in the bucket. Where is the breakthrough that will create the sea change in technology that will get solar well past its current 2-3% share?

Reaching Out to the Sun

That breakthrough will have to solve the challenges not only of scale but of the interruptibility of solar power. Most of the solar energy approaching Earth is lost as it makes its way through the atmosphere. Then of course there’s the daytime, nighttime effect due to the Earth’s rotation.

Moving our point of solar power collection closer to the sun by creating a satellite power plant in space that continually faces the sun will address both of those issues.

The concept is called space-based solar power (SBSP) or solar power satellites (SPS). Many countries are steadily working on how to make this happen. Japan was one of the first, as I reported seven years ago.

Russia, the European Union, and India are also focused on this effort. China claims they will be collecting solar energy this way by 2030, but it’s unclear what kind of scale they’re envisioning.

The U.S. military is working on it as well, and is currently experimenting with satellite technology that can capture solar power and beam it to remote bases to ensure an uninterruptible energy supply in strategic locations. Additional military tests are planned for 2023 in which materials will be deployed in conjunction with the International Space Station.

How it Works

Imagine a massive five square mile solar sail in orbit always facing the sun. The energy it captures would be converted into energy waves and then transferred to antennae on earth via microwave transmissions. These transmissions are not affected by the earth’s atmosphere and cloud coverage as laser power beams currently are. Down on Earth, the energy is converted back into electricity. It sounds complex and futuristic, but in fact we’ve already solved the major technical barriers to make this feasible. Collection and transmission using these techniques are very doable.

The remaining challenges, though, are related to scaling. We’ll need to put a tremendous amount of material into orbit along with an army of workers to assemble it. But these challenges seem less and less daunting. Thanks to the proliferating private space industry, delivery of the material over a reasonable amount of time seems possible. And rather than relying on hundreds of workers housed in mega-sized space stations, we will program space robots to do the vast majority of repetitive assembly

Space is Starting to Feel Like Home…

Rocket launches and space stations are hardly newsworthy anymore. Unless there’s a disastrous launch or incredible video from the surface of Mars, space is hardly newsworthy anymore. The fact that space is now routine is a very encouraging development. Space is so routine that we’re getting traffic jams up there between activity by NASA, the Defense Department, and the private sector, not to mention similar activity from other nations. Some see our tapping into the wonders and benefits of space as a new inflection point in human history, similar to the discovery of electricity or the invention of the steam engine. That’s because we’re increasingly looking beyond our planet for solutions to challenges here on Earth. Materials for a solar power station could be mined from the Earth’s moon. Satellite imaging systems are providing detailed images of earth. Zero-gravity manufacturing environments are enabling the creation of ultra-pure products. A web of satellites will soon deliver uninterrupted and mobile internet signals to most of the world. And now we’re placing a bigger “ask” of space that we ever have: to help solve our environmental issues by giving us a location for massive, efficient solar power stations.

…Yes, it’s Messy but not too Messy

Space is getting crowded, though, thanks to all these satellite-based initiatives. What about collisions? It’s a condition known as Kessler’s Syndrome, named after the NASA scientist who has suggested that it’s just a matter of time before active satellites and space junk collide, initiating a chain reaction of collisions as more and more items get knocked off of their established orbital paths. It doesn’t appear that solar power satellites will be as susceptible to collisions compared to Elon Musk’s Starlink satellites. Most of the commercial satellite activity we’re seeing these days is in lower earth orbits that are less than 750 miles above Earth. Solar power stations are being planned far higher than that – around 22,000 miles above the Earth, roughly one-tenth of the distance to the moon.

Will it Solve Our Pollution Problems?

Over the near term, we shouldn’t rely on solar power stations to solve all our pollution and environmental issues on earth. The science is sound, and many groups and nations are making progress, but realistically the technology won’t be online on a large scale for decades. We’ll be making incremental progress leading up to that, for example with targeted solar power satellites providing power for military bases or space-based equipment, but we won’t be powering entire countries anytime soon. Why some say this future tech can’t come soon enough, it’s far better that we understand the unintended consequences, from piercing microwave holes through our atmosphere before deploying it on a large scale.

Although solar power represents the fastest-growing share of new electricity capacity, it still accounts for just three percent of the total U.S. electricity generated. And only three percent of homes in the U.S. have solar panels, compared to 20% in Australia.

Two companies, in particular, are trying to raise that U.S. number – one rooftop at a time.

Tesla is arguably the most influential and visible of the two, having purchased SolarCity, the early industry leader in rooftop solar panel systems, in 2016.

Sunrun, founded in 2007, is the other major player. For years it has been the leading supplier of residential solar panel systems and it widened that lead after its purchase of Vivint Solar Inc. in 2020. It’s possibly being overtaken by Tesla, though, based on the megawatts of solar Tesla has deployed over the past 12 months.

Rooftop solar panel technology is an example of a distributed energy resource (DER), meaning it’s a localized, relatively small power source that’s located apart from a major, centralized power plant. DERs can be a single home or a mini, localized, renewable power station (solar or otherwise) serving a neighborhood or community.

Energy Independence at Home

Tesla, especially, is touting a comprehensive approach that links its rooftop solar panels to its energy storage battery product called Powerwall. In fact, in true Elon Musk style, the company recently announced you can’t buy one without the other. Essentially, Tesla is selling a “powerplant” home kit that generates and stores power for use in that structure, and delivers excess power back into the electricity grid – known as “net metering.”

While less splashy, Sunrun also offers a similar battery-enabled home energy storage system.

At-home storage of power captured from solar panels is critical, relatively recent expansion of solar residential technology services. It’s especially piquing the interest of homeowners in California and Texas who last year faced extended power outages due to wildfires and ice storms, respectively. Blackout-proofing is a powerful sales pitch!

The economics of residential solar are getting better, too. Installation costs continue to go down, and late last year the federal investment tax credit of 26% of the cost of installation was extended by Congress for another two years. A similar credit is available for commercial building solar panel installation.

The Bigger Picture

The rooftop solar technology addresses two major future-related situations. First, there is an increasing electrification of our life, including our cars and our appliances. Second, we clearly need to minimize carbon emissions from traditional power generation in the face of climate change trends.

In short, we need more clean electricity and that means we need more clean electricity producers – large and small, in other words, solar farms and solar roofs.

But technology breakthroughs, societal imperatives, and government bureaucracies don’t always work in lockstep. For many years, state and local permitting delays for rooftop solar panel installation have been a concern and an anchor on the residential solar industry. However, a new federally funded web app available to local governments may help with that. California is an early adopter.

The Trends are Up

Thanks to those natural disaster-driven blackouts, and no doubt also to homeowners with time and cash on their hands during the pandemic, solar panel installation was up 43% in 2020 compared to the previous year, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA). That produced 19.2 gigawatts of new energy capacity – and one gigawatt can power 190,000 homes. The U.S. currently has about 97.2 gigawatts of installed solar capacity and SEIA predicts that by 2030, solar installations will quadruple from current levels.

And the Future is Up Too – Literally

We’ve only scratched the surface when it comes to capturing solar energy with our panels. The panels themselves are being improved. Experts say that many of the early panel systems in use today are less than 15% energy efficient. They’re stationary and can’t be adjusted to follow the sun. Breakthroughs in construction and materials will improve the efficiency of newer models.

After all, there’s a lot more solar energy out there, and up there, for the taking. The earth is blasted with more than 173,000 terawatts (one terawatt is 1,000 gigawatts) of solar energy each year – 10,000 times more than we need.

The challenge is to capture some of it and transform it into electricity. There’s some amazing research underway to examine different ways to do this. In next week’s column we’ll look at some that seek to capture solar energy even closer to its source.

In the meantime, Sunrun, Tesla, and others are doing their best to make sure that no ray of light that hits a rooftop is wasted. It’s a fun competition to watch. We all know Elon Musk and his take-no-prisoners approach to markets and competition. Sunrun’s CEO Lynn Jurich has been equally successful taking a different tack, seeing allies in people from all sectors of the energy industry.

Both see the solar rooftop market at a tipping point, where investment in solar energy technology has an incredible upside.
