In an era where brevity is king and social platforms prize succinctness, acronyms have become the shorthand of choice for communication. But this burgeoning reliance on condensed language is causing a rift, not just in comprehension but in bridging generational divides.

The inundation of these cryptic clusters of letters, seemingly useful, is paradoxically making our messages more obscure, especially when age groups intersect. It’s not merely a matter of ‘LOL’ versus ‘BRB’; it’s the silent chasm that is being formed when one generation’s staple lexicon becomes another’s befuddling code.

It’s gotten to the point where many would-be readers won’t even bother to try. Overuse of acronyms has become, creating an unforeseen linguistic crisis that I call “acronym blindness”, where clarity is compromised, and misunderstandings are fomenting in clouds of confusion happening all around us.

The Acronym Overload in Scientific Publications

The landscape of scientific literature has seen an explosion of acronyms over the past seven decades. A comprehensive study conducted by Dr. Adrian Barnett and Dr. Zoe Doubleday from the Queensland University of Technology and the University of South Australia delved into this phenomenon by scanning millions of titles and abstracts published from 1950 to 2019. Another example is “CI.” Though it may sound like a secretive government agency’s acronym, in research, it typically denotes “confidence interval.”

However, HR might take the cake for a multiplicity of meanings. While in the corporate world, it often stands for “human resources,” in scientific literature, it might indicate “heart rate” or “hazard ratio.” Confusion here could lead to rather amusing scenarios where a person might wrongly assume that the HR department is now involved in heart health!

And let’s not forget PET. Anyone outside the scientific community would associate it with furry companions, but in a researcher’s glossary, it stands for “positron emission tomography”.

A surprising 30% of them appeared only once, and another 49% made their presence between two and ten times over a 70-year period.

In our quest for efficient communication, acronyms – abbreviations formed from the initial letters of words – have become an integral part of our language. However, they sometimes obscure more than they elucidate. As these shorthand symbols proliferate in our daily discourse, we must grapple with the potential pitfalls they introduce. Final Thoughts

It seemed like a good idea to close out 2022 with an overview of the ten most impactful columns of the year. The rating system we used was one where the editors at FuturistSpeaker.com all weighed in and decided which columns would most likely have a significant impact over time. With that thinking in mind, here is what we came up with:

1. We Didn’t Arrive Here by Accident

What do we know about human purpose and whether humans were placed on planet Earth by a divine force or whether our presence is the result of randomness and chance? In this column, I discuss the thinking of several past and contemporary experts, including Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, Nikola Tesla, Tony Robbins, Jordan Peterson, Brian Armstrong, and Michio Kaku, on the subject of life’s meaning and purpose. I also discuss the limitations of our current mathematical models and why they don’t make sense. My conclusion is that there are clear signs of intelligent origin and that humans were not placed here by accident, but admittedly, this still leaves far more questions than answers.

2. Hyper-Individualized Learning for a Hyper-Individualized Future

As a futurist, next-generation learning has been one of the topics I’m most passionate about. Our need for hyper-individualized learning is driven by several factors, including our time, our personality, and an overwhelming need to feel unique in a world of over 7 billion people wanting many of the same things. This AI-driven learning system will be driven by personal interests, a hyper-individualized sense of purpose, and a set of milestones to help define progress. Unlike traditional institutions that only credential their own in-house courses, this system will test, assess, and grant micro credits for virtually all topics, subjects, and forms of learning that align with the user’s interests.

3. Inventing the College Equivalency Scale

We have information flowing continuously from thousands of different sources, and it’s preposterous of us to think that only credentialed learning has any value. One of the first tasks for the designers of this future learning system will be to establish a universally accepted equivalency scale based on micro-credits. The equivalency scale will be based on an additive barometer of lifetime achievement. It will show users when their credits and micro-credits add up to the equivalency Bachelor, Master, and Ph.D. It will then add hundreds of levels beyond Ph.D. onto the accomplishment scale. Micro-credits will be used to assess learning in far more granular forms by using a learning measurement scale where 100 micro-credits are the equivalent of 1 college semester credit.

4. Will AR Smart Glasses Replace Smartphones and Become our Personal Buddy Bots?

The third part of future learning will involve smart glasses or contacts, which may even replace smartphones if they can figure out the right interface. People consume a ton of information every day. Bookworms spend countless hours reading. And YouTubers, gamers, music lovers, TV addicts, Twitchers, and networking junkies each have their own way of absorbing knowledge. But we currently have no way of monitoring what we’re being exposed to or measuring the salient pieces of wisdom being added to our working memory. The early monitoring devices will likely be incorporated into something like smart glasses to see what we’re seeing, hear what we’re hearing, and will have sensors to feel, touch, smell, and taste everything we’re experiencing. This device would complete the future learning trifecta that I’ve been envisioning. So will AR smart glasses replace smartphones? I believe the more relevant questions are what portion of our online time will be spent utilizing smart glasses and how soon will that happen?

5. In Case You Didn’t Get the Memo, the Nature of Work Has Just Changed

We are seeing a growing number of companies implementing a four-day workweek and the benefits it can bring for both businesses and employees. A study by Ernst and Young found that 40% of companies in the survey have implemented or plan to implement a four-day workweek. This trend is also seen in other countries such as Iceland, the UK, Japan, and New Zealand. Both businesses and workers prefer the four-day workweek as it can increase productivity, improve employee satisfaction, and allow for greater flexibility in scheduling. The psychological effects of the four-day workweek have shown that employees are more focused and committed to their work when they have a shorter time frame in which to complete it. The four-day week will likely become far more widespread in the future as it offers a balance between work and personal life and may be better suited to the needs of a modern workforce.

6. Thorium Reactors – The Future of Energy

The future of energy will involve transitioning from fossil fuels to alternative sources, such as renewables and nuclear power. Renewables, including wind, solar, geothermal, hydro, and biomass, currently make up about 12.5% of energy usage in the US but face limitations due to the need for invisible energy and the backlash to visible infrastructures like wind and solar farms. Nuclear energy, which currently only accounts for 8.9% of energy usage in the US, is projected to become a primary energy source in the future. Thorium-based reactor systems have several advantages over uranium-based methods. Even though most changes in the power industry are slow, it is expected that nuclear power will eventually surpass fossil fuels and renewables as the primary energy source.

7. Four Laws for Managing the Laws

The U.S. has more laws than any other country, and that has contributed to the U.S. having a higher percentage of prisoners than any other country. To address this issue, I have proposed a four-step approach to correcting the situation. Essentially, “Four Laws for Managing the Laws”:

1. Public Access Requirement: All laws must be posted in one central online location. Any laws not posted on this website will be deemed unenforceable.
2. Sunsetting Laws: Any laws that have not been applied or enforced in the past 20 years become unenforceable and must be removed from the list.
3. Simplification: All laws must be written at an 8th-grade comprehension level. No new laws can go into effect or current laws enforced until they’re certified to have reached this standard.
4. Code of Government Ethics: No governmental entity shall be allowed to profit from the enforcement of its own laws. After all, whenever there’s a direct profit motive that links enactment with enforcement, the nature of government changes, and our humanity becomes compromised.

8. Self-Cannibalism and the Extreme Possibilities of Cell-Cultured Agriculture

As an avid researcher, I’m constantly tuned in to progress being made on the stem-cell-derived meat front. We’re still very much on track for widespread production and consumption, given the investments we’re seeing from major players, including individuals and even meat processing companies. With the outlook for lab-grown, often called slaughter-free meat, wide open, it’s time to take this to a new level and push the envelope of our stem-cell lab programs for the benefit of humankind. At the macro level, cultured meat technology, combined with others like precision fermentation-derived microbial proteins, and good “old-fashioned” plant-based meat products, could fundamentally change our food supply in a way that wouldn’t dramatically affect our consumption experiences but improve our world in many other ways.

9. Private Space Stations: The Future Portals for Private Space Commerce and Tourism

In the future, space research and development is expected to be driven by private enterprises on privately owned space stations. As the International Space Station deteriorates to the point of becoming unusable, NASA and other agencies will begin renting space on privately owned, Earth-orbiting laboratories. In addition, space tourism companies will use private space stations as space hotels to offer tourists the opportunity to vacation in space. Private space stations will gradually be upgraded to offer more comfortable living arrangements for tourists and, over time, will be located in other locations beyond Earth’s orbit, such as the moon or Mars. Private space stations will also serve as staging areas, regional offices, and warehouses for commercial ventures in space. There will likely be additional space structures along well-established routes for resupplying, deliveries, and other functions.

10. Drone Delivery: A Massive Huge Industry Coming Soon to a Doorstep Near You

While some challenges related to the technology and logistics of drone delivery have been addressed, others still need to be resolved. However, these challenges should not hold back the widespread implementation of drone delivery, as we saw with the introduction of cars in the early 20th century. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will allow the drone delivery industry to progress if appropriate safety measures are in place. Within 4-6 years, most people in the U.S. will be able to receive drone deliveries, and the transition will happen even quicker in other countries in the Asia-Pacific region. The widespread implementation of drone delivery may seem gradual, but we are on the leading edge of a massive new industry, and the transition will be breathtaking.

As we step into 2023, last year’s thinking will begin to fade into the tombs of ancient history. But rest assured, we’re in for several crazy years as the path of transition we’re going through still has a long way to go.

Blockchain technology is continuing to transform fundamental institutions. We saw this first with cyber currency and related financial systems, then with art and entertainment, and now you can add organizational structures to that list.

Since blockchain can encrypt and securely store smart contracts, it can be used to establish the governance of an organization that’s based on those immutable, contractual agreements. Organizations that use this governance system are called Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO), pronounced “Dow.”

Instead of a hierarchy of employees, managers, and leaders, governance of a DAO, its name states, is decentralized and subject to the smart contract-based rules, policies, and procedures for everything from conflict resolution to profit sharing – all stored and viewable on the blockchain. No need to enforce or monitor the processes. Each person is regulated and guided by the decentralized autonomous organization’s contracts.

In many ways, DAOs enable an automated form of democratization for organizations.

Boss-Less Businesses

As more DAOs come online, we’ll be hearing more about “stakeholder economies” instead of shareholder economies. “Work ecosystems” will replace work platforms as the daily method of interaction with these cutting-edge companies.

Just because they’re decentralized and even metaverse-based, though, doesn’t mean DAOs will be loosely organized and haphazardly run. DAO smart contracts have staying power; they can’t be changed except by a vote of the members of the decentralized autonomous organization, however they choose to establish those voting procedures. Their smart contracts are transparent, which means there’s no wiggle room for any participant to veer from the DAO’s mission or subvert their processes in any way.

How DAOs Work

DAOs are participatory and dynamic. Today’s DAOs are mostly formed around cryptocurrency and NFT financial investments. DAO participants earn a financial stake, and therefore a “say,” in these DAOs through buy-in in the form of cryptocurrency-based “governance tokens” or similar mechanisms. Each stakeholder’s voting rights reflect their level of financial buy-in. In some cases, the stakeholders are simply investors. In other instances, they take on roles to support the organization.

After the initial rules of the decentralized autonomous organization are defined, members are recruited, and offered a stake and a voice in the operation of the organization, voting on specific investment opportunities as well as the DAO’s overall direction. Members can submit proposals, participate in votes, and share in the tasks and success of the decentralized autonomous organization.

To the extent that governance tokens are limited, and the DAO prospers, the tokens can grow in value similar to a traditional equity instrument. Smart contracts often address how the tokens or ownership stake can or can’t be sold and the implications for the voting rights connected with that sold ownership token.

The Future – DAO-2.0

As mentioned earlier, DAOs have tended to be crypto-oriented in their missions and purposes. They’re oriented around a shared treasury, and their decision making revolves around how to invest or spend those funds. For example, many DAOs have been formed around non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and other cryptocurrency investment ventures. Most of today’s DAOs are essentially “internet communities with a shared bank account,” as one investor has described them.

But since the key ingredients of a DAO are transparency and shared decision making, all ensured by their blockchain-enabled smart contracts, the decentralized autonomous organization model can and will be used in many other business sectors beyond cryptocurrency and investing.

As is true with more and more blockchain applications (e.g., cryptocurrency investing), it won’t be necessary to understand the underlying technology and related processes. Those will remain behind the curtain. Participants will just see the very viable, democratized operating and decision-making processes inherent in the DAOs.

Not all DAOs in the future will be virtual, impersonal, and 100% online as they are today. Post-COVID, we’ll continue to see a mix of remote and in-person employee engagement within companies and project teams. DAOs will serve as a unifying structure to ensure continued shared accountability and an inclusive decision-making system in these hybrid arrangements.

DAOs will, in many cases, replace the LLC model for the formation of midsized companies. This model won’t be workable for all businesses or in all industries, though. It would be difficult to transition large corporate entities into a DAO structure. Rather, the model will most likely be used for nonprofits, social networks, and new ventures.

In DAO.2, more participants will be employees or active daily contributors to the venture rather than simply investors. They’ll earn governance tokens for their work along with “regular” compensation, even if they weren’t initial investors.

The new DAOs will be best-suited for well-focused companies and those with time-limited projects and initiatives. And while it may not be the right model for large, conglomerate, multinational corporations, certain processes, projects, and sub-businesses within those larger entities – R&D functions for example – will most certainly be candidates for DAO-oriented management structures.

Beyond Business

The metaverse gaming industry is embracing the DAO operating structure as they increasingly are providing forums for players to make suggestions on game rules, form committees to debate proposals, and even weigh in on the structure of voting rights.

Given their empowering and inclusive nature, blockchain-enabled DAOs will be an ideal underlying structure for informal groups, clubs, and even public sector governing bodies. Enforced organizational transparency, inclusion, joint decision making – these guiding principles that are inherent in DAOs will be valuable for nearly any collective structure of human beings that share a common purpose.

While this represents a radical departure from the traditional way businesses operate, we will be discovering fairer and more impactful ways for managing our organizations in the future.

Truly democratic systems tend to fail when numbers get large and the inclusive processes become unmanageable and impractical. But in the future, DAOs will be an important new tool for large and small organizations that want to offer a democratically run experience.

Record-high bitcoin prices. Meme stocks and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Investors these days seem to have an insatiable appetite for speculating in non-traditional opportunities, along with too much time on their hands and an eternal optimism about how those risks will pay off.

They often do pay off, though, at least for those on the inside, thanks to the age-old “Greater Fool” theory of investment. It doesn’t matter if you overpay for an asset as long as you can sell it to someone who’s willing to pay more for it than you did.

What are SPACs?

Investment in Special Purpose Acquisition Companies, or SPACs, fit that mold in some respects – it’s usually the late joiners who lose.

SPACs are highly capitalized, publicly traded “shell companies” waiting on the sidelines to merge with a promising, private company.

SPACs have been around for several decades or so, but until recently they’ve been the realm of Wall Street Insiders. That’s changed. Since the first of the year, SPACs have raised more money than they did in all of 2020. At the moment, they’re sitting on $103 billion. They don’t have the luxury of too much patience because once a SPAC is capitalized, the company has two years to use that money to make an acquisition or else liquidate.

How do SPACs work?

SPACs are typically formed by wealthy investors (“sponsors”) via an initial public offering (IPO). Early investors are invited to join and add their equity, usually at $10 per share. The money sits tight while the SPAC leadership team scours the landscape for a great private company (the “target”) to merge with and take to higher levels.

When the target is identified and confirmed, those early investors can opt to stay in or to cash out with modest interest gains at the time of that announcement. But if the announcement sounds sufficiently exciting (electric trucks!) and rewarding (“significant growth potential”), the shares will quickly trade higher than the initial $10 price. the insiders will make out well, while the rest of the investors will buy high. It’s a familiar story.

From the target’s perspective, that business owner is grateful not only for the infusion of capital and the opportunity to go public but also to work with an experienced SPAC team that will serve as an internal management team. These private companies often see this as an easier and faster path to going public than the very rigorous and traditional IPO process.

Why Now?

Why are SPACs suddenly hot? Why have they gone from a relatively obscure market capitalization strategy to the front pages of our news feeds?

Current capital market volatility is one factor. It’s getting more difficult to accurately price an IPO, but SPAC share pricing is more assured. That’s one of the reasons we’ve seen more private companies go public through SPAC mergers than through IPOs recently.

Another reason for the current popularity of SPACs is our short-sighted view that the only direction for the stock market is UP. The SPAC security’s price usually enjoys a decent initial bump because it now reflects the target company’s brand and its reported potential. Prices are generally inflated at first, but investors seem to have no qualms about driving them higher still.

There’s also the celebrity factor. Former politicians, sports stars, and other cultural icons are increasingly affiliated with SPACs and that brings the average investor into the game as well – for the wrong reasons.

Finally, the target companies themselves are often in trendy, meme-like, buzz-worthy sectors. That makes it all the more likely that social and traditional media will join in and add to the hype and push prices to higher levels. Even the reputable business publications tend to drive interest in SPACs in general by covering the success of the profitable ones.

Long-Term Implications

2021 is picking up where 2020 left off – we’re all in a state of pandemic hyper-vigilance in a lot of areas – economic and otherwise. We jump on the next cause, story, trend – and investment – and ride them hard until they reach an irrational extreme or they’re replaced by another cause, story, or trend. Then those manias settle back into a more realistic level of daily prominence in our lives.

That’s what I predict for SPACs. Many will fail to deliver as promised. Dozens of second-tier SPACs with billions of dollars are chasing too few worthy private companies while the clock is ticking. Out of desperation, they’ll seize upon average, meme-driven companies that they’ll hype to the Greater Fools. That won’t end well. The stories will shift to SPAC failures, and then our attention will shift elsewhere.

And when the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) eventually catches up and closes some loopholes, adds more stringent reporting, and limits a SPAC’s ability to overhype in ways that a company on the IPO track can’t, even more, SPACs will be weeded out.

The SPAC phenomenon may turn out to be a bit of a bubble, but that doesn’t mean each SPAC is a bubble. Many of these shell companies are investing in solid private companies. They’ll do well for themselves and for their investors.

These well-run and well-regarded SPACs will continue to serve as an excellent alternative for the owner of a quality private company who wants to go public.

These business owners will have two legitimate options: take the traditional IPO route and retain more control of their company, or merge with a SPAC led by seasoned investors and businesspeople – in exchange for giving up a portion of their company.

SPACs won’t fade back into the relative obscurity they enjoyed at the turn of the century. They’ll be with us moving forward, but we won’t be hearing about them quite as much!

COVID-19 has accelerated many trends – including the work-from-home movement that was already inching along pre-pandemic. As a result, and as we discussed recently, there will continue to be significant de-urbanization with out-migration from mega-cities like New York to second-tier cities like Nashville and even smaller communities like Boise.

This will cause urban and regional Economic Development officials to shift, or at least expand, their growth strategies in important ways.

Traditional Economic Development

For years, municipal economic development has been company-focused. It was centered solely around attracting new companies and helping small, local companies get bigger. Jobs would follow. Economic Development teams used tax credits, zoning, permitting, property tax abatements, workforce training, and other tools in their arsenals to help companies make the right decision.

Who can forget the drama of 2017 when Amazon received proposals from more than 200 cities in North America to be the site of its second headquarters?

This approach isn’t going away, but it will no longer be the sole focus of local economic development efforts.

A More Recent Perspective on Economic Development

Fast forward to December 2020 when Oracle announced it had changed its corporate headquarters from the Bay Area to Austin, where it already had a significant presence.

“Change” … not relocate. It’s not clear if any employees will be moving, and the company announced at the same time that work-from-home arrangements for the majority of its teams would be the norm for the foreseeable future.

The head of Austin’s Chamber of Commerce noted at the time that he didn’t learn about the “change” until it was announced by Oracle. The Governor noted that the state had provided no economic incentives.

Since Oracle’s employees already had shifted to a remote work environment, this is essentially a paper transaction … one with major tax-savings implications for the company.

Future Economic Development

No doubt there will be more Oracle and even Amazon scenarios in the future. Economic Development teams will continue to compete, and companies will continue to look for ideal situations and take advantage of the offers.

But there will be a new twist. Increasingly, the Economic Development teams will also compete for people – specifically work-from-home corporate employees, executives, and entrepreneurs.

Here’s how they’ll do it:

Investing in Digital Infrastructure

Instead of only investing in traditional infrastructures like roads, sewers, and industrial parks to attract businesses, development teams will also invest in public-private partnerships to develop IT infrastructure to support universal Cloud access, fiber, and 5G telecommunication for individuals. This will – or should – be a local government priority in any case, given what we learned about the disparate wireless technology access that put some students and families at a significant disadvantage during the pandemic.

Larger cities may already have extensive high-speed Internet availability, but their city planners will ensure there are no gaps. Smaller cities and rural areas will have further to go to compete in this area.

Investing in Schools

Work-from-home employees searching for a new home will also be sensitive to education opportunities for their children. School districts will step up their game to provide documentation of their high-quality education, especially in the STEM areas important to these employees. Private tutor networks will also become a hot issue in the future.

Investing in Lifestyle Amenities

A transplant exploring alternatives to New York or Los Angeles won’t necessarily expect to find the level of arts, cafes, fine dining, and other lifestyle-related features they’re used to. But these differentiators will certainly catch their attention as they look for a less expensive home city to work from. As cities compete for these individuals, they’ll create their own style of upscale dining, arts, entertainment, and cultural districts to help entice and retain them.

Keeping an Eye on the Cost of Living

Since the high cost of living in mega-cities is a big reason many work-from-home employees choose to relocate, cities and regions will evaluate one of the major living expenses they have some control over – the cost of housing. They’ll pay more attention than ever to zoning and permitting to ensure they have the right mix of houses at the right price points.

Recruiting VIPs – Executives

As implied above, not all work from home recruits are equal. Attracting top executives will be relatively more important since they’re likely to bring a bit of the corporate presence with them – possibly leadership teams, business functions like conferences, new hiring authority, and so on. Their relocation may trigger future corporate growth in that area as well. Oracle, for example, stated that although few if any employees would be asked to relocate to Austin, new corporate hires most likely will be based in that region.

That’s why recruiting these executives deserves a special focus. Cities may go so far as to try to build rapport with these executives on an individual basis and incentivize these individuals in the same ways they used to court them when they were doing site visits for a company relocation. Now when they come to visit, they’ll be checking out residential real estate, but they still may find concert tickets and lift passes waiting for them at their hotel.

The Other VIPs – Entrepreneurs

Chattanooga has used financial incentives to convince entrepreneurs to relocate to their city and build their businesses there. These so-called “soft landing programs” targeting people rather than existing companies will be an important part of many cities’ economic development strategies as well.

Creating a startup culture with a supportive ecosystem, mentor networks, accelerators, and access to funding are all essential ingredients for developing a hotbed of startup activity.

Collaborating with Vacation and Tourism Boards

Many of the features that make an urban area or region attractive to a tourist are the same things that will appeal to a corporate executive, an entrepreneur, or a work-from-home engineer. They include climate, recreation opportunities, and eclectic dining and entertainment opportunities. Thus, moving forward, tourism outreach will most likely include a “You may even want to live here…” message.

Local Team Effort

In order to accomplish all of this, we’ll see local economic development boards expand their programs, bringing in representatives from residential real estate, recreation, education, city planning, tourism, and other specialists. This will help ensure everyone with a stake in attracting these sought-after workers is pulling in the same direction to make their city or region the residential location of choice.

Economic Development groups are typically evaluated on how many jobs they bring to the city. A new metric will need to include their success in attracting key individuals as well.
