At the intersection of artificial intelligence and global espionage, a revolution simmers that could redefine the paradigm of modern warfare. As nations pivot to embrace the transformative power of next-gen AI systems, the world’s elite spy agencies will find themselves in a covert but fierce competition not just for information but for the raw data that fuels the engine of these emergent technologies.This race for the new oil of the digital era — data — is setting the stage for an arms race unlike any we have witnessed before, where the victor holds the key to a form of warfare that is invisible yet all-pervading.

The data amassed by nations will not merely inform but will be instrumental in teaching AI systems to predict, decide, and act. The arms race for AI-driven data supremacy is not just a contest of collection but also of manipulation and obfuscation. As nations and organizations amass vast quantities of data to feed and refine their AI systems, a parallel need emerges: the need to protect one’s own data from adversarial AI while disrupting the opponents’. This landscape fosters a fertile ground for the rise of sophisticated roles and technologies—cyberfog machines, data distortionists, and AI mirage-makers—dedicated to the art of information warfare.

Cyberfog Machines:

In an environment where clarity of data equates to power, creating confusion—or “fog”—becomes a strategic imperative. Cyberfog machines would be systems designed to inject volumes of chaff data into the data streams that enemy AI relies upon, thus degrading its ability to make accurate predictions or assessments. Such machines would generate noise and false patterns to confound enemy algorithms, making the task of filtering signals from noise incredibly taxing for AI systems.

Data Distortionists:

These would be the digital-era saboteurs, experts in subtly altering data in ways that are hard to detect but have cascading effects on the output of AI models. They could work by introducing biases or shifting data sets just enough to skew AI decisions, leading to misinformed strategies or misjudged situations. Over time, even small distortions could lead to significant strategic miscalculations by an adversary.

AI Mirage-Makers:

Just as a mirage distorts perception in the physical world, AI mirage-makers would create illusions in the digital realm. They would craft sophisticated simulations or deepfakes to deceive both AI systems and human analysts, crafting believable yet entirely artificial scenarios. These mirages could misdirect resources, trigger false alerts, or camouflage actual operations under the guise of fiction.

As this arms race intensifies, the demand for such roles and technologies is likely to expand, drawing in a variety of actors. Beyond state-sponsored agencies, private contractors, hackers-for-hire, and even rogue states may enter the fray, each seeking to advance their agendas or sell their services to the highest bidder.

The potential for an ecosystem of offensive and defensive measures surrounding AI data is vast. Defensive countermeasures will also evolve, with AI systems designed to detect and counteract these distortions and deceptions, leading to a continual cat-and-mouse game between data purists and data disruptors. The ethical and legal implications of this new form of warfare will be profound, raising questions about accountability, the nature of conflict, and the rules of engagement in a world where seeing should no longer be synonymous with believing.

The data wars are coming, and only the super-responsible will learn to transcend the quest for power!

As we step into 2024, the breakneck pace of generative AI’s evolution shows no signs of slowing down. Its capabilities today seem almost magical but will become table stakes in short order. What we have witnessed so far is merely a prelude to this technology’s disruptive potential across every industry.

The unprecedented scale of investments into generative models and applications already exceeds the research budgets of most nations. This highlights how decisively some tech giants are betting on AI’s ascendance. Open-source ecosystems and startups are poised to drive equally exciting breakthroughs.

But with such power comes the responsibility to steer its influence prudently. As generative AI infiltrates our creative pursuits, business operations, public discourse and indeed daily lives, maintaining its societal benefit will require deliberate efforts.

Ethical considerations surrounding data sourcing, model transparency, system accountability and misuse prevention warrant urgent attention. Policies, norms and technical safeguards today will shape this technology’s trajectory for decades hence.

As citizens, we must develop our understanding of generative AI’s capabilities and limitations, shed our awe of its magic, and hold institutions deploying it accountable. Media literacy, as these synthetic creations blend increasingly seamlessly into our information diet, is crucial.

There are certainly risks to be mitigated proactively. But approached thoughtfully, generative AI can augment human creativity, efficiency and insight in wondrous ways. The extent of its lasting positive impact will come down to collective responsibility and wisdom.

The genie is undoubtedly out of the bottle, and the technology’s progress is unrelenting. 2024 promises to be a landmark year as generative AI’s transformation of society comes into fuller view. The actions we take today, as individuals and together, will write the human story of this historic technological flowering. There are causes for concern but also tremendous grounds for hope as we guide these transformative tools toward empowering our future.

But what does this mean for how we live, work, and play? Let’s take a closer look at some scenarios to see how AI and other technologies will shape our future.

Scenario 1 – Fred and Jessica Applying for a Home Mortgage in 2040

In 2040, Fred and Jessica were exploring the possibilities of applying for a home mortgage using both crypto and traditional currencies. They had been researching the benefits of using cryptocurrencies for mortgage payments and were excited to explore the options available to them.

Using advanced digital tools, Fred and Jessica were able to compare mortgage rates and terms offered by lenders that accepted crypto payments, as well as traditional lenders that only accepted fiat currencies.

They found that some crypto-friendly lenders offered lower interest rates and more flexible repayment schedules than traditional lenders while also allowing them to make payments in popular cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin.

After exploring their options, Fred and Jessica decided to apply for a mortgage using both crypto and traditional currencies. They submitted their application online and were pleased to find that the process was fast and efficient, thanks to the use of advanced digital tools and AI-powered assistants.

Their application was quickly approved, and they received a personalized mortgage offer that allowed them to make payments using either crypto or traditional currencies. They were able to review the terms and conditions of the offer, as well as the interest rate and repayment schedule, before accepting the mortgage.

Scenario 2 – Sarah Going Grocery Shopping in 2040

As Sarah walked into the grocery store, she was greeted by a friendly robot that offered to assist her with her shopping needs.

Sarah used her smartphone to scan a QR code on the robot, which immediately recognized her and provided her with a personalized shopping list based on her previous purchases, dietary restrictions, and preferences. The robot then handed her a sleek and modern shopping cart equipped with advanced sensors, cameras, and AI algorithms.

As Sarah made her way through the store, the shopping cart followed her around autonomously, offering personalized recommendations for complementary products based on her preferences. The cart also used its sensors to detect the items that Sarah placed in it, ensuring that she didn’t forget anything on her list.

When Sarah was finished with her shopping, she simply walked through a no-touch facial recognition payment system, which identified her and charged her account automatically. The shopping cart then autonomously returned to its charging station, ready to assist the next customer.

Scenario 3 – Sam and Tiffany Speed Dating in an Autonomous Vehicle in 2040

Sam and Tiffany had signed up for a speed-dating event and were picked up by a sleek and modern autonomous vehicle that had been specially designed for the occasion.

As they settled into the comfortable and futuristic interior of the vehicle, the AI-powered virtual assistant greeted them and explained the rules and format of the speed-dating event. The vehicle then started to drive them to their first date location, a trendy restaurant reserved exclusively for the event.

As they arrived at the restaurant, the autonomous vehicle parked itself, and the virtual assistant provided them with a brief overview of their first date. They had a great time getting to know each other over a delicious meal, and when it was time to move on to the next location, the autonomous vehicle drove them to their next destination.

Over the course of the evening, Sam and Tiffany were introduced to several potential matches, and they found themselves enjoying the unique and futuristic speed-dating experience. The autonomous vehicle provided them with a safe and comfortable environment in which to get to know each other, and the AI-powered virtual assistant ensured that the event ran smoothly and efficiently.

As the evening came to a close, the autonomous vehicle drove Sam and Tiffany back to their respective homes, and the virtual assistant asked them for feedback on their speed-dating experience. Sam and Tiffany agreed that the autonomous vehicle provided a unique and enjoyable setting for the event, and they both felt optimistic about the potential for a future relationship.

Their business, called “Virtual Worlds”, allowed customers to enter immersive VR experiences that were powered by advanced AI algorithms. These experiences ranged from adventurous and action-packed to serene and calming, providing something for everyone.

As William and Bobbi Lynn launched their business, they quickly found that there was a strong demand for their unique and innovative product. People were eager to escape into new and exciting worlds, and Virtual Worlds provided a safe and immersive environment in which to do so.

The business quickly grew in popularity, and William and Bobbi Lynn constantly innovated and improved their product. They invested in the latest AI and VR technologies, ensuring that their experiences remained cutting-edge and advanced.

As their business grew, William and Bobbi Lynn hired a team of skilled AI and VR experts who helped them create even more immersive and exciting experiences. They were constantly pushing the boundaries of what was possible with technology and became known as entertainment industry leaders.

In 2040, William and Bobbi Lynn’s Virtual Worlds became one of the most popular and successful entertainment businesses in the world, with a loyal following of customers who couldn’t get enough of their unique and immersive experiences.

Scenario 5 – Going to School for 10-Year-Old Ella in 2040

In 2040, going to school had become a truly futuristic experience, and for 10-year-old Ella, it was an exciting and enjoyable part of her daily routine. Ella’s day started when she woke up in her smart bed, which was equipped with sensors that tracked her sleep patterns and adjusted the temperature and lighting to optimize her sleep.

As she got ready for school, Ella used her smart mirror to get personalized recommendations for her outfit and makeup based on the weather, her schedule, and her personal preferences. She then walked to her autonomous school bus, which picked her up at her doorstep and drove her to school while she relaxed in the comfortable and futuristic interior.

When Ella arrived at school, she was greeted by friendly AI-powered robots that helped her find her way to her classroom and provided her with personalized recommendations for her daily schedule. Ella’s classroom was equipped with advanced AI algorithms that could personalize her learning experience based on her individual learning style and pace.

Throughout the day, Ella used advanced digital tools to enhance her learning experience, from VR simulations that allowed her to explore different parts of the world to interactive learning games that made learning fun and engaging. She also had access to advanced robotics and AI courses that allowed her to learn about cutting-edge technologies and prepare for the future of work.

When the school day was over, Ella’s autonomous school bus picked her up and drove her back home, where she could continue learning and exploring the world with the help of advanced digital tools and AI-powered assistants. For Ella, going to school in 2040 was fun and engaging and offered endless opportunities for personal growth and development.

As John walked up to the sleek and modern building, he was greeted by a friendly robot concierge that welcomed him and checked him in using facial recognition technology.

The robot concierge provided John with a personalized digital key to his room, which would grant him access to his room and other areas of the hotel. As John made his way to the elevator, he was amazed by the advanced technology that surrounded him – from the digital displays that showed him personalized recommendations for local restaurants and attractions to the smart lighting and climate control systems that adjusted automatically to his preferences.

When John arrived at his room, he was greeted by an AI-powered virtual assistant that recognized him by name and asked him how his day was going. The virtual assistant provided John with a personalized tour of the room, showing him how to use the various smart devices and appliances that were controlled by voice commands or his smartphone.

Throughout his stay, John was impressed by the level of service and attention to detail provided by the hotel’s AI-powered systems. From personalized recommendations for local activities and restaurants to intelligent room service that could predict his food preferences and dietary restrictions, the AI hotel exceeded his expectations in every way.

In 2040, Linda became an architect who leveraged advanced AI and VR technologies to create stunning and innovative designs. She used advanced computer programs that could simulate the physics and materials of her designs, allowing her to create accurate and realistic models before beginning construction.

Linda also used advanced VR tools that allowed her to create immersive 3D models of her designs, which her clients could explore and experience before any physical construction began. This helped her clients to visualize better and understand her designs, making the design process more collaborative and efficient.

Linda also leveraged advanced AI algorithms that could analyze the surrounding environment and optimize her designs for factors such as energy efficiency, sustainability, and accessibility. This allowed her to create designs that looked beautiful, functional, and environmentally friendly.

As Linda worked on her designs, she collaborated with a team of skilled AI and VR experts, who helped her to bring her visions to life. She constantly pushed the boundaries of what was possible with technology, and she became known as an architectural industry leader.

Scenario 8 – David going through an Airport to Catch his Flight in 2040

In 2040, going through an airport had become a completely different experience with the help of advanced technology. David arrived at the airport and checked in his luggage with the help of an AI-powered robot that could scan and verify his identity using advanced facial recognition algorithms.

As he made his way through security, David used his biometric data to quickly pass through the checkpoints without the need for traditional security checks. The security system used advanced AI algorithms to detect any potential threats or risks, making the security process much more efficient and effective.

After passing through security, David walked through a duty-free store that was equipped with advanced augmented reality displays, providing him with personalized recommendations and offers based on his preferences and purchase history.

David then made his way to his gate, where he boarded a futuristic airplane that was equipped with advanced AI-powered systems. The airplane could adjust its altitude and speed to optimize its fuel consumption, making the flight more environmentally friendly and cost-effective.

During the flight, David used advanced in-flight entertainment systems that offered personalized recommendations based on his preferences, providing him with a truly immersive and enjoyable experience.

When the airplane landed, David used his biometric data to quickly pass through the customs and immigration checkpoints without the need for long queues or manual checks.

Closing Thoughts

The future is a fascinating and sometimes scary place, but it’s also full of possibilities and opportunities. The scenarios we explored today are just the tip of the iceberg; we can only imagine what else the future has in store for us. As we continue to push the boundaries of technology, we must also remember to approach these innovations with caution and mindfulness, always keeping in mind the potential risks and dangers. By doing so, we can ensure that the future is not only exciting but also safe and sustainable for generations to come.

Question mapping is an exercise that opens one’s mind to explore different elements of the future without being unduly encumbered or influenced by the past.

With that in mind, here’s how I approach assessing the future of robotic dogs, the cuddly or not-so-cuddly creatures that will be by our side and part of our lives in the future.

Question Mapping Robotic Dogs

Let’s begin by imagining a scenario where a person in the future is taking their robotic dog out for a walk. So far, so good, but even this simple scenario raises far more questions than answers.

What’s the purpose of a robot dog? Is it used for protection? What kind of protection? Against what kinds of danger?

Why a robotic dog and not a robotic cat? Or monkey? Or bird? Or a giraffe? Or perhaps a humanoid robot?

How will a robotic dog respond when it detects danger? Will it first start to growl to let the owner know something is wrong? Will it bark? Will it attack by biting the person or animal it suspects to be dangerous?

Or will it operate far less like a traditional dog? Will we be able to talk back and forth to our robotic dogs in the future? Or will they communicate silently through text messages, video chat, or an elaborate audio-smart glasses holographic setup?

How situationally aware will these robotic animals be? Will they have the ability to deploy tiny drones so they can view the situation around them remotely? Will they have the ability to communicate with other robotic dogs in the area?

Does the right to bear arms extend to the point of owning a robotic dog that’s armed? If so, what will it be armed with? A traditional gun? A sonic blaster? A taser? A laser? Water cannons? Or something else?

Could robotic dogs be used to rob a bank or used in gang wars? Might one be used to assassinate a president, a king, or a prime minister?

Will robotic dogs have the ability to jump? Run? Swim? Fly? Climb the side of a building? Or all of the above?

Will we see a full range of robotic dogs in the future, from kid’s toys to business versions, from police department dogs to military dogs?

What will happen when a robotic dog meets a real dog? Or a cat? Or a horse? Or a mailman? What happens when a robotic dog meets another robotic dog? Will they sniff their way around each other?

Will we reach a point where most people own robotic dogs in the future? If so, what will be its killer app? What feature(s) will make it super useful, like picking up a pizza when I’m hungry? Or groceries? Or making Amazon deliveries? Or helping a small child fall asleep.

Thanks to this kind of Question Mapping, I now have an expanded mind and can focus more clearly on the future. I can easily conclude that robotic dogs will be all of these things and much more.

Let’s begin by focusing on just a few key features below.

Why Robot Dogs Make Some People Nervous?

Rudimentary robotic dogs have already arrived. They’re being tested to patrol the U.S. southern border and sniff out landmines in Ukraine. Their use as border patrol bots is making some people uneasy – likely evoking memories of when dogs were used in civil rights protests or perhaps the Metalhead episode of “Black Mirror.”

I have to admit, the version of the robot dog being tested for border patrol looks more like it came from the set of Terminator than the movie set of Benji. Since these dogs are unarmed and used for observation, it’s hard to see why there should be more objection to their surveillance work than with the deployment of aerial drones.

Dogs of War

Robotics, in general, will be an important asset in future battles on land, air, and sea. Robot war dogs – essentially four-legged robots with the dexterity to maneuver in difficult terrain – will be used primarily on land, and their utility will likely be confined to important and often dangerous work like searching buildings, detecting mines, conducting reconnaissance, and standing watch.

These war robots will be armed. Their “paws” won’t wrap around a weapon, and they won’t stand on their hind legs to fire – as that’ll be a job more suited for humanoid soldier-bots. Instead, deadly weapons will be attached to dog robots’ bodies, and AI will guide their shoot/no-shoot decision-making as they carry out their missions.

Seeing Eye Robot Dogs

One future application I’m really excited about is the use of robots as seeing eye dogs. A sight-challenged person might want a real companion dog at home, but they’ll likely use a more reliable robotic Labrador or Golden Retriever to assist them when going on a trek outdoors.

This application is really a no-brainer, given the technology already inherent in delivery robots from Amazon and others that are currently making their way into more and more of our cities.

Furry Robot Pets

Last but not least, we’ll certainly have robot dogs as pets in the future. Dogs with a service purpose will be the first to be developed, though, since it will be quite some time before most families will choose a robot dog over the real version, in spite of their obvious hygienic advantages.

None of us has a dog to serve our daily needs or wait on us hand and foot. Not yet, anyway. Instead, we choose to have dogs to refresh our souls and to faithfully serve as unconditional companions.

And that day, too, will come for robotic dogs. Electronic companies will produce designer dogs, taking orders for robot dogs that match specific attributes of real breeds. They’ll have the texture of a cuddly dog, and their AI will respond to our moods and our needs, just like a real dog does.

They’ll be programmable in many ways, able to take on the habits and nature of real dogs – as a watchdog, for example, with varying levels of aggressiveness, or to bark at the mail robot or check out other robot dogs they encounter on their daily walk.

Since Hollywood has given us images of evil skeletal robots – dogs and otherwise – it will take a little time to put robotic dogs into some reasonable perspective. In the future, some will be like Dobermans. Others will evoke Collies or Pekingese, each depending on their utility and purpose. Their image, fur, and facial expressions will be customizable to project their appropriate menacing, businesslike, or heartwarming intentions.

But for the most part, the robotic dog of the future remains a blank canvas, waiting for that unusual cutting-edge designer, and their true art and form to take shape.

Throughout history, nations have sought to achieve a technological military advantage. Strong nations have stayed strong by being the first to develop breakthrough munitions (from fire and gunpowder to nuclear weapons) and munitions delivery systems (from catapults and cannons to B-52s and rockets).

We’ll always have conflict, and we’ll always have nations and revolts as people fight for what they think is right and fair. And we’ll always have despots who tragically send their armies to fight for the sake of dominance and conquest, or out of a sense of paranoia.

While it may not be apparent given what we have seen in the early Russian military tactics, the use of machine-based weapons has steadily been replacing the use of human fighters. But since those initial days in the fight for Kyiv, the skies over Ukraine and the cities across that country are becoming a real-time laboratory for the testing of new UAV (unmanned aerial vehicles) and land-based AMR (autonomous mobile robots) military technology.

Your Tax Dollars Funding Military Breakthroughs

In the last 60 years, many technology breakthroughs had an initial military application – from velcro and duct tape to portable 2-way radios, drones, and digital photography. And we shouldn’t forget that the Department of Defense is credited with developing an information disseminating system that evolved into a precursor to the Internet.

That’s why I make it a point to keep track of what DARPA is up to. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, a relatively small office within the Department of Defense, was established in 1957 after the U.S.S.R. demonstrated technological superiority in the space race. The very clear mission of DARPA is to make sure the U.S. never again falls behind in the technology race when it comes to national defense matters.

Fortunately, DARPA seems to have been granted considerable leeway to pursue imaginative projects, including robots that can fuel themselves by eating plants, robotic infantry mules, and mechanical elephants. That kind of autonomy and license to fail is important because discoveries are hit and miss propositions and innovators shouldn’t be afraid of or be discouraged from, the more than occasional miss.

And when it comes to military robotics, DARPA has furthered UAV technology with advances in onboard radar systems, extended flying time, reduced detectability, and more.

Training Our Troops

Our nation’s military battlefield training, for example at the Army’s National Training Center in Fort Irwin California and the Dugway Proving Grounds in Utah, are preparing our troops to react to UAVs and work alongside and better utilize AMRs in battlefield conditions.

Military leaders are quite outspoken about how advances in robotics and AI, and presumably their military applications, are taking the form of a “weapons race,” primarily with an eye on China.

Military Robotics History

The concept of military robotics is somewhat imprecise. Technically, it encompasses both UAV and AMR land-based crawling systems.

As we move further up the autonomous food chain, for some, the word “robot” applies to UAVs and AMRs with human operators who are watching local conditions through cameras and taking at least some part in the operations. And when it comes to UAVs there are multiple degrees of automation in that level of robotic autonomy. More rudimentary UAVs are completely person-flown. Newer models autonomously handle many of the navigational details using artificial intelligence, leaving the more complex maneuvering and final weapons engagement to off-site operators.

Other observers take a more literal, science fiction-like perspective to robot UAVs and AMRs, envisioning if not storm troopers, then AMRs and UAVs that not only maneuver to, around, and over the battlefield but make the lethal fire/not fire decisions on their own based on AI programs and machine learning.

Apparently, long-range military planners are not convinced we always need a human in the loop.

State of the Art is In Ukraine

The first military flying drones were essentially remote-controlled small planes, developed just prior to World War 2. It would be another 60 years before they were weaponized as the U.S. armed Predator drones with Hellfire missiles were used in the Middle East after 9/11.

With their relatively low cost, today’s simpler UAVs have been described as the offspring of the improvised explosive devices (IEDs) used in wars just a decade ago. They became the weapon of choice for many small countries, and they have made a big difference, often in local conflicts that many of us aren’t even aware of. Their value lies in their lethality and their propaganda effect.

Meanwhile, back on the ground, lethal unmanned AMRs have already been used in the early stages of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. These looked like miniature tanks (many of them were improvised) and were controlled by handlers similar to how UAVs are managed.

Going Full Autonomous

What about robot weapons of the most Star Wars kind – those that are fully empowered to seek and destroy, operating independently? The United Nations recently debated the issue of banning these weapons and putting them in the same category as land mines and booby traps. However, they failed to reach a consensus.

The feasibility of these weapons isn’t in doubt. It’s just a question of how well they can do their job and who’s accountable for a disastrous mechanical malfunction or an imperfect AI targeting algorithm. After all, battlefields are messy and they often extend into cities where civilians are present.

There are reports, in fact, that these autonomous flying “killer robots,” technically known as “lethal autonomous weapons systems,” may have already been utilized on more than one battlefield – in 2021 in Libya and earlier this year by the Russian military in Ukraine. In both cases, it wasn’t fully confirmed that the UAVs were operating in a fully autonomous mode, but they had the capability of doing exactly that.

The Future of Robotic Warfare

The genie is out of the bottle, and I don’t think we’re likely to remove or prevent the use of autonomous “killer robots” from future battlefields. Ironically, the major powers will probably be the least likely to use them against each other.

The United Nations will continue to try to outlaw autonomous killer robots, and they may ultimately succeed thanks to the endorsement of major countries. But outlaw nations will use them regardless of whoever signed the latest peace treaty.

The Turkish version of the autonomous UAV sold to armed forces in Libya, the Russian version used in Ukraine, and others will be available in the underworld arms markets relatively cheap. They’ll be snapped up by rogue dictators and generals who will use them against their adversaries, internally or externally, in second and third-level conflicts where there are few neutral observers. The citizens and soldiers of these nations will increasingly be victims of this autonomous, deadly technology.

In the meantime, the major countries will continue to improve the lethality and capabilities of their UAVs and AMRs. These weapons will have greater and greater autonomous capability, to the point where a flip of the switch would make them fully autonomous. Nations will need to have this capability in order to maintain an uneasy deterrent status quo, similar to the nuclear deterrent philosophy.

And just a final thought to keep us humbled and remind us of the stakes of a major war, this quote from Albert Einstein seems appropriate for our time:

“I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.”

Are computers, robots, and machines automating too many jobs out of existence. Is it accurate to describe the short-term jobs market an “AI-robot jobs Armageddon,” as some have?

The future is rarely as comfortable as the status quo. For certain demographic groups, technological innovation and the evolution of ideas can be disruptive, messy, and worse. This is reflected to some extent in the labor market, where currently the average 50-year-old person has held 12 different jobs.

The only thing certain is change, and to a large extent, change is driven by technology advances.

A Historical Perspective on the Future

In 1964, an open letter was drafted and sent to President Johnson, warning him of the coming Triple Revolution. The letter was composed and signed by 35 members of the “Ad Hoc Committee on the Triple Revolution,” which included luminaries like Nobel Chemist, Linus Pauling; civil rights activist, Tom Hayden; and Swedish Nobel Economist, Gunnar Myrdal.

The letter focused on three revolutions that seemingly were taking place at the time:

1. Cybernation Revolution – increasing automation
2. Weaponry Revolution – mutually assured destruction
3. Human Rights Revolution – growing civil unrest

While the letter addressed all three issues, it focused primarily on the Cybernation Revolution. The authors predicted that machines and automation would cause massive new unemployment as jobs shifted significantly. They stated:

“A new era of production has begun. Its principles of organization are as different from those of the industrial era as those of the industrial era were different from the agricultural. The cybernation revolution has been brought about by the combination of the computer and the automated self-regulating machine. This results in a system of almost unlimited productive capacity which requires progressively less human labor. Cybernation is already reorganizing the economic and social system to meet its own needs.”

Of particular interest to me was the work of one of the signers, Robert Theobald, a futurist who had written extensively on the economics of abundance and his advocacy of a Basic Income Guarantee.

These are the same topics being discussed by those today who fear massive technological unemployment in the years ahead.

Were They Right?

This warning from more than 50 years ago still seems to haunt us. Computers obviously have dramatically changed the jobs landscape, as well as the skills required to perform those jobs. And the degree to which this is happening is speeding up, along with the concern about technology-driven unemployment.

Additional factors are at play as well. The pandemic accelerated change trends in many areas of our lives – from healthcare to work environments to shopping … to the jobs market.

Post-COVID hiring has been slower than many expected. There are many possible reasons for this, but I would suggest that during the past 12 months, our economy has undergone decades-worth of automation innovation.

During that same time, we’ve also experienced a decade’s worth of people reconsidering their job futures – for example, getting serious about long-term careers and, in many cases, shifting away from retail and other front-line jobs. Those are the jobs most amenable to automation, according to economists.

And even manufacturing, the epitome of automation, seems to have taken another major leap recently in that direction. The sector has recovered strongly from the pandemic while only bringing back 60% of the workers that were lost.

What the Numbers Show

In the past, researchers typically suggested that major steps in automation within an industry rarely led to mass lay-offs. Instead, they would suggest automation was spurring job retraining, retirements, and shifts to service-related industries.

And when you get past the anecdotal information and dig into the numbers, a similar situation is evident today. A recent MIT study found a fairly significant relationship between the deployment of robots and the jobs that they displaced.

According to their analysis, in any given metropolitan location, each robot that was added to the workplace replaced 6.6 jobs within that region. The impact is ameliorated a bit in that the resulting efficiencies and reduced cost of goods benefitted employment in other industries and locations. Thus, the net national effect of the deployment of one robot was the loss of 3.3 jobs.

It’s not surprising that the researchers found that this impact was borne disproportionately by blue collar workers – low-skilled and especially middle-skill workers, suggesting that technology breakthroughs were contributing to income inequality.

It all adds up to a lot of jobs

On a global level, the jobs impact of technology automation is pretty staggering.

Oxford Economics predicts that, thanks to improved robotic technology, better AI, and lower costs for both, robotic automation will cause the loss of 20 million jobs globally by 2030 – including 12.5 million in China, two million in the EU, and 1.5 million in the U.S. In contrast to the MIT study, though, they’re basing this on an estimate that the displacement effect to date has only been around 1.6 workers per robot.

They point out that at this macro level, the impact will be disproportionately more severe not just on blue collar workers but less advanced countries overall.

But here’s where they were wrong

If you paid close attention to the doom and gloom of the economist’s predictions above, the thing most noticeably absent was predictions about new job creation.

The same technologies that are used to automate jobs out of existence are the same technologies that will be creating the jobs and industries of the future.

Let me say that again. The same technologies that are used to automate jobs out of existence are the same technologies that will be creating the jobs and industries of the future.

The job market is constantly changing. In fact many of the jobs people perform today did not even exist 10 years ago, and most of the jobs that did exist, require a new vocabulary, additional skills, and new forms of understanding.

So if we ask the question – “Is this time truly different?” – the answer is always “yes.”

Every wave of innovation brings with it new demands, new standards, new policies, and a need for new skills.

But perhaps the more salient question we should be asking – “At what point do we start to exceed our human ability to adapt?”

Countless times in the past, people have predicted jobs disappearing, but virtually none have registered more than a ripple effect on the job creation engine, a job creation engine that is being driven by a series of complex self-organizing systems.

Self-organizing systems tend to develop around a series of human management processes where complex systems with many moving parts orient around human need as a core driver to both self-correct and reorganize to build a more stable, pulsing state of operation.

Today’s teachers, coaches and vocational guides should be steering young people towards jobs and careers both in and with these technologies, and that’s where new learning technologies come into play.

In 1984, educational psychologist Benjamin Bloom found that he could take an average student scoring in the 70th percentile range in school and move them into a setting with one-on-one tutoring coupled with a mastery learning process and they would suddenly score in the 98th percentile range.

Bloom’s process led to a huge improvement in student performance. And his results were replicated numerous times by several different researchers.

Going from a 70th percentile to 98th percentile student was a two sigma improvement. This meant that his students performed two standard deviations better than students who learned through conventional instructional methods.

In his papers, Bloom asked the very pragmatic question, “How do we achieve these results in a more practical, more scalable way than one-on-one tutoring?”

Until now, there has really been no practical way of offering one-on-one tutoring for the masses. However, AI and an assortment of other emerging technologies is about to change all that.

The unwritten human mandate

The human race has an unwritten mandate to pass our rapidly growing base of knowledge and information on from one generation to the next.

Our base of knowledge is growing rapidly. Before 1900, it’s estimated that human knowledge doubled every century. However, the doubling of information has speeded up considerably, and the latest research now shows our base of human knowledge doubling every 12 hours.

Think of all the blog posts, podcasts, video recordings, papers being written, social media posts, and surveillance camera records being added to the information universe. It’s truly a staggering amount of information being added every minute of every day.

That said, the tools we have today for passing knowledge from one generation to the next are simply not up to the task. In their present form, libraries are not good enough, schools are not fast enough, and technology still has a poor interface for the human mind. But changes are happening very quickly!

With the base of human knowledge doubling every 12 hours, no it’s not possible to increase our mental sphere to a point where we’re actually absorbing all this information. But we can improve our interface with it, to the point where it is as seamless and as invisible as possible.

Even though it’s outside our present cognitive abilities, we’ll be able to interact with it as though it is. People will be able to ask us a question and we’ll be able to quickly think our way through to an answer.

Our minds will be able to surf the compendiums of the Internet to find the answers.

We will no longer need to have all of our most important data committed to memory. Instead, our minds will have a seamless interface with the knowledge universe, we’ll train our minds to know where to look, and the answers to all our questions will only be a few seconds away.

Final Thoughts

Young people today will be our future designers, craftsmen, engineers, architects, doctors, dentists, scientists, researchers, politicians, lawyers, retailers, and future business leaders. They will be inheriting a world filled with problems – aging infrastructure, crumbling systems, corrupt governments, radically disruptive technology, ethical dilemmas, and a host of seemingly impossible situations.

At the same time, they will be using tools, systems, and techniques that will enable them to be exponentially more capable, productive, and accomplished.

We are on the verge of making the transition from the here-and-now to what-comes-next, and that’s where it gets interesting.

Robots are coming. They’re coming with or without our blessing, and in shapes and forms we can’t even imagine.

But they also come with limits, limits that we will soon discover along the way.

Challenges in the construction industry, including a declining workforce and the cost of materials, combined with some incredible technology and manufacturing breakthroughs, are changing today’s construction sites in ways that will make them unrecognizable in the future. The three trends making the most impact are: modular construction, 3D printing construction, and robotic bricklaying.

Modular Construction

Prefabrication is a broad term that describes the practice of building all or portions of a home or commercial building off-site – maybe even in another state or country. The components are transported to the construction site for incorporation into the structure or to make up the structure itself.

The most intriguing of these prefab options is “permanent modular construction,” or PMC. Specialized prefabrication companies can build rooms or entire suites offsite, complete with pipes, fixtures, wiring, tile, and countertops. They’re shipped to the construction site by truck and off-loaded with massive cranes. The modules are held in place while workers scramble to connect them with other elements of the structure or stack them on top of or next to another module.

It’s not quite snap in place but it’s not too far off.

While modular construction represents around 4% of commercial and residential projects in the U.S., that number is already significantly higher in China, Japan, and some European countries.

Modular projects offer incredible efficiencies and implications for quality. Fabricating modules at a climate-controlled indoor site transforms the work into more of a repeatable factory job than a craftsman task. Plus, in order to withstand the rigors of the transporting and off-loading steps, modules tend to be built to sturdier specifications, which make the resulting buildings better able to survive the worst that nature can throw at them.

A recent industry analysis found that developers see the most promise for the modular technique with healthcare facilities, hotels/motels, multifamily residences, schools and colleges, and low-rise offices.

3D Printing Construction

Before dismissing the idea of a “concrete house,” check out this one by a builder in New York. The company’s robotic construction system built 40% of the structure – the windows and walls – before finish workers came in to take care of the rest. The final cost of the house was approximately 20% less than a comparable, traditionally built home.

The technical term for 3-D printing is “additive manufacturing”. Framing a 2,000 square foot house using this technology can take as little as three days. 3-D builders are moving beyond the use of normal concrete to reinforced composites that can further reduce the price and make the homes even more secure from fire, pests, water damage, and mold.

The overall cost reduction of 10-50%, faster construction speed, and increased durability makes 3-D printed homes very attractive as affordable starter homes.

Even greater efficiencies are possible when the printing is combined with modular construction. This planned community in California will have 3-D printed homes that are built in a fabrication facility and then shipped to their new neighborhood.

Printed homes can be designed and constructed in all styles, from traditional to downright space age, as with these futuristic-looking styles.

From an environmental perspective, additive manufacture of homes is a win as well, since the process doesn’t produce any scrap.

3-D homes could be ideal in remote, impoverished locations around the world. If the truck and supplies can be brought in, there’s little need for too many more construction
specialists, especially if the designs are quite simple.

Robotic Bricklaying Construction

What would be more futuristic than a competition between a robotic arm that’s printing a wall vs. a robotic arm that’s building a brick wall? The concepts are similar – the layer-by-layer construction of the interior and exterior framing guided by pre-programmed design plans.

Today’s truck-based, robotic arms can load, cut, route, and place bricks, framing a house in as little as two days. Human bricklayers lay 300-500 pieces per day on average. In contrast, the leading robotics alternatives can place 200 much larger bricks per hour – and that’s expected to increase to 1,000 in future models. These robots also apply a special mortar or adhesive that dries faster than standard mortar.

Just like the other construction technology solutions, robotic bricklaying is evolving and making tremendous strides in improved speed, safety, and quality. The benefits and economies related to this approach to bricklaying are even greater when the technique is applied to multi-story structures.

The Future of Housing

Residential and commercial construction in the U.S. is a $1.6 trillion industry. Hundreds of thousands of construction workers were laid off during COVID and the Census Bureau estimates that 60% of them won’t return, in spite of the expected resurgence of the industry in 2021.

In the U.S., state and local budgets have been squeezed thanks to COVID economic impacts, so less funding is available to subsidize affordable housing projects. And with the hot housing market, more and more people are being priced out of starter homes.

Modular assembled, 3D printed, and robot built homes can bring down housing costs and help address both of those pressing societal issues as we move into the future, leaving plenty of room and demand for all three of these technologies.
