With an AI architect trained on millions of designs and building rules, Sarah can reshape her home in minutes by prompting instead of drafting.

The Question Home Depot Doesn’t Want You Asking

Sarah Martin sits at her kitchen table with a laptop, designing her family’s next house. Not browsing pre-designed floor plans—actually designing, from foundation to roof peak, using AI that generates complete architectural specifications from conversational prompts. No architect. No draftsman. No months of revisions and six-figure professional fees. Just Sarah, the AI, and ideas about how humans will actually live in 2030.

Three weeks later, autonomous construction robots begin 3D printing her custom home. Total professional design cost: zero. Construction cost: 60% less than conventional building. Timeline: 8 weeks from breaking ground to move-in ready.

This forces an uncomfortable question: when AI handles architectural design, and robots handle construction, what happens to the entire apparatus of residential development—architects, contractors, building codes written for human construction methods, the whole system built around the assumption that custom homes require experts and massive budgets?

Let me walk you through what Sarah’s design process actually looks like, the features she’s considering that no human architect would suggest, and why this becomes how most people build houses within a decade.

What Sarah’s Design Session Looks Like

Sarah opens the AI architect interface—think ChatGPT but trained on millions of architectural plans, structural engineering principles, building codes, material properties, and emerging construction technologies. She starts prompting.

Prompt 1: The Commuter Drone Landing Pad

“I need a reinforced rooftop landing platform for a four-passenger commuter drone, 20-foot diameter, with integrated charging station pulling 50 kilowatts, weather-protected stairwell access to the second floor, and safety railings that don’t interfere with vertical takeoff. Show me options that don’t make my house look like a helipad.”

The AI generates twelve variations. Sarah likes version seven—the landing pad integrates seamlessly with the roofline, disguised as an oversized cupola when not in use. The retractable cover protects the charging station. LED perimeter lighting activates automatically during landing approach. Estimated cost addition: $8,000 for reinforced structure, $12,000 for charging infrastructure, $6,000 for retractable cover system.

Traditional architect’s response to this request: “That’s not standard residential construction. We’d need to hire a structural engineer specializing in aviation infrastructure, get specialty permits, probably months of approvals…”

AI response: “Here are twelve code-compliant solutions. Would you like to see wind load calculations?”

Prompt 2: The Delivery Drone Port

“I need a secure delivery reception system for autonomous drones—multiple package sizes, weather-protected, temperature-controlled for groceries, with automatic inventory scanning and household system integration. I don’t want packages sitting on my porch where people can steal them.”

AI generates solutions ranging from simple to elaborate. Sarah selects a wall-mounted system with four separate compartments—ambient, refrigerated, frozen, and oversized. Drones approach, authenticate via an encrypted handshake, and deposit packages in the appropriate compartment based on metadata. Sarah gets a smartphone notification. Compartments unlock via biometric or code.

The AI suggests integrating this with exterior wall design—making the ports look like architectural features rather than appliances stuck on the side. Estimated cost: $4,000 for basic system, $8,000 for refrigerated compartments, $2,000 for smart integration.

Prompt 3: The Robot Security Perimeter

“I want autonomous security robots patrolling the property at night—360-degree cameras, threat detection, non-lethal deterrent capability. Need charging stations, weatherproof housing, and integration with home security system. Make it not look dystopian.”

AI suggests ground-level charging alcoves integrated into landscaping features—decorative pillars that serve a dual purpose. Robots patrol autonomously, return to charging when needed. The system connects to interior security, emergency services, and Sarah’s phone. Estimated cost: $15,000 for two robots, $3,000 for charging infrastructure, $2,000 for integration.

The AI notes: “Local regulations in your jurisdiction don’t currently address autonomous security robots. You’re operating in a regulatory gray area. Recommend consulting local authorities.” Sarah makes a note.

In seconds, the AI designs an energy system tailored to the property—solar tiles, battery storage, smart routing, costs, savings, and even how architectural choices change power output.

Prompt 4: The Solar Skin

“I want integrated solar power—not panels bolted on the roof, but solar cells integrated into the building materials themselves. Roof, south-facing walls, and anywhere that catches the sun. Generate enough power to run the house and charge two EVs.”

AI analyzes the property’s location, sun exposure, and energy requirements. Suggests solar roof tiles rated for a 40-year lifespan, battery storage system in garage, smart power management routing excess to the grid during high production. Estimated cost: $35,000 for solar roof, $18,000 for battery storage, $5,000 for smart power management. Projected savings: $3,200 annually on electricity, break-even in 18 years.

The AI optimizes roof pitch and orientation for maximum solar capture while maintaining aesthetic appeal. Shows Sarah exactly how much power generation decreases if she wants different architectural features that shade solar surfaces.

Prompt 5: The Autonomous Vehicle Bay

“Design a garage that works for both human-driven cars now and autonomous vehicles later. Include charging for two EVs, a robotic car washing system that operates while parked, and automated maintenance monitoring that alerts me to service needs.”

AI generates a garage with floor drains, water supply, and robotic washing arms that deploy from the ceiling. Charging stations integrate into parking spots. Diagnostic sensors monitor tire pressure, fluid levels, battery health—connecting to vehicle systems via wireless protocols. When the family transitions to autonomous vehicles, the garage works perfectly.

Estimated cost: $12,000 for the wash system, $4,000 for the charging infrastructure, $3,000 for monitoring systems. The AI notes this adds $19,000 to garage construction but eliminates roughly $200 monthly in car washes and catches maintenance issues before they become expensive failures.

Prompt 6: The Climate-Controlled Zones

“I want different family members to control the temperature in their own spaces independently. My daughter runs cold, my son runs hot. Don’t want to heat/cool the whole house to the same temperature.”

AI designs HVAC with individual zone controls—each bedroom, office, and living area gets an independent thermostat. System learns preferences, adjusts automatically based on occupancy and time of day. More efficient than single-zone heating/cooling because it doesn’t condition unused spaces.

Estimated cost: $8,000 additional for zone controls and smart dampers. Projected savings: $800 annually in energy costs through targeted conditioning.

Prompt 7: The Flood-Proof Foundation

“I’m building in Florida. Design the foundation to withstand flooding from hurricanes—elevated structure, waterproof lower level, pump systems, hurricane-resistant construction throughout.”

AI analyzes FEMA flood maps, historical storm data, and projected sea-level rise over 50 years. Suggests elevated foundation raising first floor 8 feet above grade, sacrificial lower level with flood vents, impact-resistant windows, and roof rated for 180 mph winds. Underground storm shelter doubling as a tornado safe room.

Estimated cost: $45,000 for elevated foundation and hurricane hardening. But: $1,200 annual savings on flood insurance, potential to survive a Category 5 hurricane that would destroy conventional construction. The AI calculates the break-even point and shows Sarah exactly what damage would occur to conventional vs. hardened construction in various storm scenarios.

Prompt 8: The Expandable Floor Plan

“Design the house so we can add rooms later without major renovation—teenagers might need separate spaces, aging parents might move in, work-from-home needs might change. Make expansion easy.”

AI generates a modular design with reinforced connection points where future additions attach. Plumbing and electrical infrastructure includes capped lines positioned for easy expansion. Exterior walls on expansion sides use connections compatible with 3D printing robots—future additions print directly onto existing structure and integrate seamlessly.

Estimated cost: $6,000 for expansion-ready infrastructure. Projected savings: $30,000+ when additions are needed—because expansion doesn’t require demolition, complex tie-ins, or matching materials no longer available.

Prompt 9: The Greywater Recovery System

“I want to recycle water from sinks, showers, and washing machines—reuse it for toilet flushing and irrigation. Make it simple to maintain.”

AI designs an integrated greywater system—separate plumbing captures non-sewage water, filters it, stores it in an underground tank, pumps to toilets and sprinkler system. Reduces municipal water consumption by 40%. The system includes self-cleaning filters and smartphone monitoring, showing water savings in real-time.

Estimated cost: $14,000 for the complete system. Projected savings: $600 annually on water bills, plus reduced environmental impact. Break-even in 23 years, but the system lifespan is 40+ years with minimal maintenance.

Sarah’s home drops physical keys entirely as AI designs a full biometric entry system—fingerprints, face and iris scans, backups, guest access codes, and a complete security audit trail for every doorway.

Prompt 10: The Biometric Everything

“I don’t want keys. No physical keys for doors, garage, or anything. I want biometric entry—fingerprint, facial recognition, maybe iris scanning. Include backup systems if technology fails.”

AI suggests biometric entry on all exterior doors, garage, and certain interior spaces (home office, gun safe, medicine cabinet). Battery backup for power outages. Temporary access codes for guests, contractors, and emergency services. System logs all entries with timestamps and photos.

Estimated cost: $8,000 for comprehensive biometric security. The AI notes this eliminates locksmith calls, lost key replacement, and provides a security audit trail impossible with physical keys.

Bonus Consideration: The AI Interior Designer

After the structure is finalized, Sarah prompts: “Now design the interior. I like mid-century modern mixed with industrial elements, lots of natural light, and minimal maintenance. Show me furniture, colors, materials, lighting—complete design I can actually implement.”

AI generates a full interior design with specific furniture recommendations, paint colors, lighting fixtures, and window treatments. Provides shopping links with price comparisons. Estimates total interior cost at $47,000—significantly less than hiring an interior designer who’d charge $15,000-25,000 for the same work.

What This Costs Compared to Conventional Construction

Traditional custom home construction:

Architect fees: $45,000-$75,000 (10-15% of construction cost)

Structural engineer: $8,000-$15,000

Interior designer: $15,000-$25,000

Contractor markup: 20-35% on materials and labor

Construction timeline: 8-14 months

Cost per square foot: $200-$400, depending on location and features

Total for 2,500 sq ft home: $500,000-$1,000,000+

Sarah’s AI-designed, robot-constructed home:

AI architectural design: $0 (monthly subscription to design platform: $200)

Structural engineering: Handled by AI, reviewed by licensed PE for certification: $2,000

Interior design: Handled by AI: $0

Construction: 3D printing robots, minimal labor: $80-$120 per square foot

Construction timeline: 8-10 weeks

Total for 2,500 sq ft with all advanced features: $200,000-$300,000

Sarah’s cost savings: $300,000-$700,000

But the real savings aren’t just money—it’s design freedom. Traditional architects push clients toward proven designs because untested ideas risk problems during construction. AI explores millions of variations instantly, testing structural soundness, code compliance, and constructability before suggesting solutions. It proposes features human architects wouldn’t consider because they’d require too much specialized research for a single project.

Quickly This Becomes How People Build Houses

Current situation: 3D printing construction exists but remains a niche. Apis Cor, ICON, Mighty Buildings and others are printing demonstration homes. AI architectural tools exist, but require human expertise to operate. Regulatory frameworks written for conventional construction create barriers.

Timeline for mainstream adoption:

2025-2027: Early adopters build AI-designed, robot-printed homes in permissive jurisdictions. Building departments struggle with how to inspect non-traditional construction. Industry lobbying intensifies—conventional construction trades view this as an existential threat.

2027-2030: Several major metro areas update building codes explicitly accommodating 3D printed construction. AI design platforms become user-friendly enough for homeowners without technical training. Construction costs drop as robot efficiency improves. First suburban developments emerge using exclusively printed construction.

2030-2035: 3D printed construction becomes cost-competitive with conventional building in most markets. Major homebuilders adopt hybrid approaches—print structure, install traditional finishes. DIY AI-designed homes become an aspirational middle-class goal—design your dream home, print it affordably.

2035-2040: The Majority of new residential construction uses AI design and robotic printing. Conventional construction becomes a premium option for historical aesthetics or specialty projects. Building codes standardize around printed construction. The question shifts from “can we build it this way?” to “why would we build it any other way?”

This Changes Beyond Construction Costs

Homeownership becomes accessible. When design costs disappear, and construction costs drop 60%, households priced out of ownership can afford custom homes. This doesn’t just shift economics—it shifts politics, wealth accumulation, and generational mobility.

Architectural diversity explodes. When custom design costs nothing extra, every home becomes unique. The endless repetition of suburban tract housing—developer optimizing for construction efficiency—disappears. Neighborhoods become visually diverse as owners design homes matching their specific needs and preferences.

Building codes face obsolescence. Regulations written around human construction limitations—”walls must be vertical because it’s hard to build otherwise”—make no sense when robots print any shape equally easily. Curved walls, complex geometry, integrated features—all cost the same to print. Codes will adapt or become irrelevant.

Professionals shift roles. Architects don’t disappear—they shift from designing individual homes to designing AI design systems. Structural engineers certify AI-generated plans rather than creating them manually. Contractors manage robot fleets rather than human crews.

Development patterns change. When construction happens in weeks instead of months and costs half as much, speculative building risks drop. Small-scale developers emerge—individuals building 2-3 homes annually using AI and robots. Real estate becomes more distributed, less dominated by major homebuilders.

Aging housing stock accelerates obsolescence. When new construction includes drone landing pads, robot infrastructure, solar integration, and climate-optimized design at prices competitive with existing homes, older housing stock depreciates faster. Why buy 1990s construction when you can build 2030s construction for comparable money?

The Uncomfortable Reality

We’re not asking whether AI-designed, robot-printed homes are possible—companies are building them now. The question is whether this remains niche premium technology or becomes a dominant construction method.

My assessment: Within 10 years, AI-designed homes will become common for the middle class and above. Within 15 years, the majority of new single-family construction uses AI design and robotic printing. Within 20 years, we’ll view conventional construction the way we view manual accounting—technically possible but economically irrational.

The technology works. The economics are overwhelming. The barriers are regulatory and cultural—humans are uncomfortable trusting algorithms with something as personal as home design, and incumbent industries are lobbying to protect conventional construction.

But the cost savings are too large. When Sarah saves $500,000 by designing her own home with AI and having robots print it, her neighbors notice. When she includes features impossible in conventional construction—integrated solar, drone landing pad, robotic security—they notice more.

When her home prints in 8 weeks while her neighbor’s conventional construction drags on for 14 months, everyone notices.

Final Thoughts

AI-designed, robot-printed homes aren’t future technology—they’re present capability waiting for mainstream adoption. Sarah’s design session isn’t science fiction. Every feature she considered exists today. The only barrier is connecting these technologies in a package accessible to average homeowners.

This is simultaneously the construction industry’s greatest threat and homeowners’ greatest opportunity. When design becomes free, and construction becomes cheap, homes shift from being real estate investments following developer formulas to becoming personalized spaces optimized for how families actually live.

The question isn’t whether AI will design our homes. It already can. The question is whether we’ll embrace the design freedom that this technology enables or cling to conventional construction because it’s familiar.

Sarah’s already decided. She’s breaking ground next month. Her neighbors are watching very closely.

Our homes are more than just buildings; they are places where we grow, build relationships, and find comfort. As we project forward into the future, the concept of ‘home’ is set to undergo transformative changes, responding to shifting demographics, technological advancements, and our growing awareness of environmental sustainability. In the next 10 to 20 years, the architectural design of our houses will significantly evolve, reflecting our deepening understanding of health, our desire for flexibility, and our need for integration with evolving technologies.

1. AI Smart Home Integration

Future homes will be seamlessly integrated with smart technology to create living spaces that are more comfortable, efficient, and secure. This goes beyond just connecting various appliances and systems to the internet.

In these future smart homes, AI will play a central role. It will not only be about controlling lights, temperature, or security remotely, but the AI will learn from residents’ habits and preferences to automate these controls. For instance, your home might learn that you start your day at 6 am, so it will automatically adjust the thermostat, open the blinds, and start brewing your coffee at that time.

Facial recognition technology will enhance security systems to identify residents and trusted visitors and alert homeowners to unknown individuals. Similarly, integrated sensors could detect unusual activity and potentially prevent accidents – for example, alerting you if the oven has been left on for too long.

Entertainment systems will also become more integrated and personalized. Imagine your home knowing your favorite TV shows and automatically recording them or creating a perfect lighting and sound ambiance for your movie night.

The rise of IoT will also see more appliances being controlled by voice commands or through mobile apps. Everything from refrigerators to washing machines could provide status updates, alerts for problems, and even automated maintenance reminders. Additionally, smart homes will become more interactive. Augmented Reality (AR) could play a part in this, for instance, overlaying a cooking tutorial on your smart stove or displaying your day’s schedule on your bathroom mirror.

With these advancements, future smart homes will not just be about gadgetry or automation but creating an environment that’s in tune with the occupants’ lifestyle, providing comfort, convenience, and an enhanced living experience.

2. Shared Coworking Spaces in Residential Design

As we move into a more flexible and remote work era, the boundary between our work and home lives is increasingly blurred. In response, the architectural design of our homes in the next 10 to 20 years will integrate shared coworking spaces, fundamentally altering how we perceive and design residential spaces.

In future home designs, shared coworking spaces will be a common feature, particularly in communal living arrangements or large residential complexes. These spaces will provide a conducive environment for remote work, fostering collaboration and promoting a sense of community among residents. They could be designed as designated rooms or areas within the building that are fully equipped with workstations, high-speed internet, meeting rooms, and even amenities like a coffee station or a relaxation zone.

The design of these spaces will prioritize both productivity and comfort. Ergonomics will be a key consideration, with furniture designed to support good posture and minimize strain during long work periods. Natural light will be maximized to boost mood and focus, and noise control measures will be implemented to ensure a quiet, distraction-free environment.

Beyond physical design aspects, technology will play a critical role in these shared coworking spaces. Advanced tech solutions such as smart screens for video conferencing, virtual reality headsets for immersive meetings, or AI-powered noise-cancellation systems could become standard features. These tech integrations will not only support seamless remote work but also enhance collaborative experiences among the residents.

However, it’s not all about work. These shared coworking spaces will also function as social spaces, promoting interaction and community-building among residents. They might host networking events, skill-sharing workshops, or communal activities, encouraging residents to connect with each other beyond their professional roles.

As the lines between home and office continue to blur, shared coworking spaces in residential areas will support the changing dynamics of work, offering flexibility, fostering community, and promoting a healthy work-life balance. This trend will not only reshape our homes but also redefine how we interact with our living spaces in the context of work and community.

3. Virtual/Augmented Reality Spaces

As virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) technologies continue to evolve, they will significantly influence home design in the coming years. Beyond the realm of gaming, these technologies can provide immersive experiences for entertainment, education, work, and social interaction, changing how we interact with digital content and our living spaces.

Future homes may incorporate dedicated VR/AR spaces designed to provide enough room for movement while ensuring safety. These spaces could feature open floor plans, unobstructed by furniture, with padded or soft-finish floors and walls to prevent injury. Inbuilt tracking systems could be used to interact with the virtual environment and ensure users stay within the designated area.

In the realm of interior design, AR can transform how we decorate and arrange our homes. With AR, homeowners could visualize how different furniture pieces, color schemes, or lighting conditions would look in their actual space before making a purchase or change. This would allow for more confident design decisions and personalized aesthetics.

For work and learning, VR can create immersive, distraction-free environments that improve focus and engagement. A home office or study might include a VR setup for attending virtual meetings or classes, and transporting users to a simulated boardroom or lecture hall with the push of a button.

The integration of VR/AR in homes also has potential therapeutic applications. For example, VR could be used for guided meditation or stress relief, creating peaceful, immersive environments within one’s own home.

As the hardware for VR/AR becomes more compact and wireless, incorporating these technologies into residential design will become easier. In the future, VR/AR could become as much a part of our homes as our televisions or computers are today, reshaping our living spaces into adaptable, interactive environments.

4. Robot-Friendly Design

As advancements in robotics and artificial intelligence continue to accelerate, the integration of robotic companions into our households becomes increasingly plausible. Future homes may very well be designed with the intention to accommodate these mechanical helpers, fostering their interaction with the human occupants and the house itself.

Robot-friendly design involves considering the physical characteristics and functionalities of robots. Homes might incorporate designated pathways and clear floors to facilitate robot movement. This could include wider doorways and hallways, ramped transitions between different floor levels, and open floor plans that allow for easy navigation.

Charging stations will become a standard part of home design, similar to how many homes now have dedicated spots for charging mobile devices. These could be discreetly integrated into the home design, perhaps as a part of a utility room or a corner of the living area.

Homes could also incorporate digital interfaces and control panels at a height accessible to both robots and humans, allowing robots to manipulate various home systems. For instance, a domestic robot might be tasked with adjusting the home’s thermostat or controlling the lighting based on the homeowner’s preferences.

In houses with multi-story, design consideration would be given to how robots can move between different levels. Options could range from installing robot-friendly ramps or lifts to developing robots that can safely and efficiently climb stairs.

Additionally, as robots become more adept at performing complex tasks, kitchens and utility areas might be designed with robotic functionality in mind. Adjustable countertops or modular storage units could be utilized to allow robots to cook meals or clean up, contributing to household chores.

Incorporating robot-friendly design into our homes is about optimizing for a harmonious coexistence between humans and robots. The goal is to create a living environment where robotic companions can effectively augment our daily routines, making our lives more comfortable and efficient.

6. Biophilic Design

Biophilia, a term popularized by biologist Edward O. Wilson, describes the innate human attraction to nature and living things. Biophilic design is an approach to architecture that seeks to connect building occupants more closely to nature. As awareness of the importance of mental and physical well-being increases, biophilic design principles will play a more significant role in residential architecture in the next 10 to 20 years.

Biophilic design incorporates elements of nature into the built environment, both directly and indirectly. Direct applications may involve the integration of actual nature into architecture. This could take the form of indoor gardens, green walls, water features, or the use of natural materials such as wood and stone. The sounds, smells, and tactile experiences of nature can also be incorporated to provide a multi-sensory connection.

Indirect nature engagement might include biomimetic designs, which mimic natural forms and patterns, or biophilic spatial configurations that emulate environments where humans historically thrived. Large windows, glass walls, or skylights that let in plenty of natural light are a common feature, as well as designs that facilitate views of the outdoor environment.

Access to outdoor spaces will also be a critical part of future residential design. This could include private spaces like balconies and terraces or communal green spaces in multi-residential developments. The outdoor spaces would be designed to provide meaningful contact with nature, such as planting edible gardens or native species to attract local wildlife.

Biophilic design goes beyond simply adding plants to indoor spaces. It’s about creating a living environment that embodies the essence of nature, promoting a sense of peace and well-being. The benefits of biophilic design are numerous, including improved mental health, reduced stress levels, enhanced creativity, and increased overall satisfaction with one’s living environment.

As urbanization continues and the disconnect between humans and nature grows, the need for biophilic design in our homes will only become more essential.

At a past DaVinci Institute mastermind group we tackled the question, “Is the intelligence of nature greater than the intelligence of humans?”

After pondering this question, the responses were a mixture of “there is no intelligence in nature,” and “nature is not an entity with a singular intelligence.”

Each one of us is part of nature and the intelligence we add is critical to the overall ecosystem.

Logically this raises several questions about an overarching intelligence, and we’ll get to that later. But, exactly what is this thing we call nature, and why do we hold it in such high regard?

One of my pet peeves with the food industry has been the association of “all natural” with “good for you.”

Not everything found in nature is good for you. Things like poison ivy, hemlock, chrysanthemums, and rhododendrons are poisonous. Nature’s extreme weather events – tornadoes, hurricanes, and earthquakes – are massively destructive. Viruses and diseases can also be considered “natural.”

Even though it fails the logic test in spectacular fashion, we somehow continue to fall into the trap that nature has it right.

No, nature didn’t have it right when it came to the dinosaurs, the dodo bird, or the saber tooth tiger. Nor did it have it right for the Aztecs, Incas, or the Anasazi.

That said, we may have some fascinating clues as to why these things that don’t make sense continue to happen, and the clue comes in the form of a question that is impossible to answer.

The question: Why is there an exception to every rule?

Why does anything exist?

Call me a skeptic, but there is no place in my mind that I can rationalize the random coming together of bizarre factors to create the universe as it’s described in all the science text books.

Out of nothing, came something. Color me unconvinced!

How does any of this make sense? Every step used to describe the chronology of the universe fails the “why test.” Why did that happen, and why does anything exist.

Keep in mind; a description is not an explanation. And repeating these unproved and unprovable theories enough times does not make them true.

What we have been witnessing is the creation of multiple support theories to prop up the original unprovable theories, with literally billions of textbooks published to make it look like a given fact, when someday everyone will refer back to it and laugh at how it masqueraded as “big science.”

We still don’t have a clue about what’s in the center of the earth, so why do we think we can say with any level of certainty how the universe was created.

Gödel’s incompleteness theorem

In 1931, Kurt Gödel published his famous incompleteness theorem. They showed that in any mathematical system, there are certain questions that cannot be answered. As a result, mathematicians have come to grips with their inability to understand the universe.

It’s not that Gödel’s theorems super difficult, rather, they’re simply unknowable. His two theorems state:

1. No consistent system of axioms whose theorems can be listed by an effective procedure (such as an algorithm) is capable of proving all truths about the arithmetic of the natural numbers.
2. If a system is sufficiently complicated, it cannot be both consistent and complete.

Beyond what he had originally proposed, Gödel’s theorems also confirm the hypothesis that there is an exception to every rule, saying it’s impossible to find a complete and consistent set of axioms for all mathematics.

Approaching this topic a bit differently, in 1936 Alfred Tarski proposed his Undefinability Theorem stating that truth is officially undefinable.

As humans, we are officially inconsistent, undefinable, and incomplete. As a result, there are certain things in science we can’t know. They are the exceptions to our rules of understandability.

How can a flawed system work better?

If I were to design the operating system for humanity, logically I’d want everything to work as planned. I’d want consistent relationships between cause and affect.

In fact, I would want every scientific law to be irrefutable, to work perfectly, every time. And yet it doesn’t!

We live in a world where there is a flaw in every theory, imperfections in every design, and a continual degradation in every person, object, and system over time.

There is an exception to every rule.

Nothing is permanent, nothing is perfect, and nothing is 100% reliable. We all intuitively know this already, and yet we are constantly striving to make things as close to permanent, perfect, and reliable as possible.

But it’s not the fact that it’s unachievable that’s important, it’s why our overarching design for humanity works this way – that’s what I find most intriguing.

For some reason, flawed humans work better with flawed designs and flawed systems. But why?

Everything fails the sensibleness test, unless you assume there is a higher form of logic at play.

The forces of gravity, speed of light, and quantum theory don’t have their flaws just because gravity, light, and the quantum guy were sitting around having a beer one night saying, “Hey, I think we should mess with people’s heads and create a bunch of imperfections!”

No indeed, clearly there are bigger things in the works. This is not intended to be a religious argument; rather it’s an argument about the known vs. the unknown, and the preponderance of garbage theories that invariably expand to fill the void.

Nature is neither our friend, nor our enemy.

If something is considered part of nature, it generally refers to the phenomena of the physical world, and also to life in general. It ranges in scale from the subatomic to the cosmic.

But it’s critical to frame our thinking around the fact that nature is not human-centric. It doesn’t have our best interest at heart.

There are no ethics or morality in nature. Morality comes from our values and nature doesn’t concern itself with any human-centered tenets or beliefs.

Final Thoughts

As we begin to deal with the complex issues ahead, I find my role and duty as a futurist changing. At times I’m looking at the future through the eyes of a philosopher, ethicist, and truth seeker even though “truth” has become such a murky issue in the increasingly squishy fields of science and physics.

Much like Schrodinger’s cat, truth is never there when you need it.

Understanding how the future unfolds will require accounting for difficult decisions along the way. These decisions become key turning points in human history. The ethics and morality of ages past will have little bearing on many issues we face in the future.

That said, I would love to hear your thoughts. Unlike most of the topics I cover, this has been more of a personal rant, so please feel free to help set the record straight.

A couple years ago my wife and I visited the beautiful Spanish city of Segovia located in the center of Spain about an hour northwest of Madrid.

At the heart of the city, nestled close to its historic shopping district, are the iconic aqueducts built during the Roman Empire nearly 2,000 years. Although the exact dates of construction cannot be confirmed, the latest evidence would suggest a start date of roughly 112 AD.

The Segovian Aqueduct has long intrigued me because it represents a rare piece of history from the distant past.

While there are a few dozen structures older than the aqueducts with the best known being the Egyptian pyramids, the Greek Parthenon, and the Roman Coliseums, there are indeed several that are much older.

The little known Cairn of Barnenez in France is widely considered to be the oldest man-made structure on planet earth, estimated to have been built in 4800 BC.

Two others, the Tumulus of Bougon and the Tumulus of St. Michel were also built in France in that era. All three were tombs or burial sites with very little known about their actual origin.

Wikipedia has a listing of 106 ancient structures that were built before the BC age ended. To be sure, none exist in any usable form other than a tourist attraction or center of archeological research.

The one exception may be Stonehenge. Since we have no idea what its function or purpose was, it may be working fine and we just don’t know it. (We love to joke about Stonehenge.)

However, it brings up an interesting question about how much of our society today will still exist 2,000 years from now.

The Long Now Foundation

The Long Now Foundation, formed in 1996, is a San Francisco non-profit organization pushing the idea of very long-term thinking and planning. Founded by Steward Brand and Danny Hillis in 1996, it aims to provide a counterpoint to today’s “faster/cheaper” mindset and promote “slower/better” thinking. As a Foundation, it hopes to create a long vision framework for operating over the next 10,000 years.

According to Steward Brand, “Civilization is revving itself into a pathologically short attention span. The trend might be coming from the acceleration of technology, the short-horizon perspective of market-driven economics, the next-election perspective of democracies, or the distractions of personal multi-tasking. All are on the increase. Some sort of balancing corrective to the short-sightedness is needed – some mechanism or myth which encourages the long view and the taking of long-term responsibility, where ‘long-term’ is measured at least in centuries. Long Now proposes both a mechanism and a myth.”

The Foundation has several ongoing projects, including the Clock of the Long Now, also called the 10,000-year clock. This mechanical clock, which is under construction, is designed to keep accurate time for 10,000 years. The manufacture and site construction of the first full-scale prototype clock has been funded with $42 million from Jeff Bezos’ Bezos Expeditions, and is being built on land which Bezos owns in Texas.

But human nature shows a different side

Human nature is often a disturbing thing to witness.

One of the tactics used by leaders throughout history has been to destroy all records of the past as a form of cultural cleansing. So no thinking about the future or the past. Here are a few examples:

363 AD – The Royal Library of Antioch, once the cultural capital of the ancient world, was destroyed in 363 by Christian Emperor Jovian, who was convinced that the library was densely stocked with “unholy” literature.

1,200 – Nalanda was a large Buddhist monastery in the ancient kingdom of Magadha, and one of the largest repositories of Buddhist knowledge in the world.
Thinking through the artifacts that will continue for the next 2,000, my initial thoughts focused on tombstones. I have serious doubts that cemeteries will survive, but the tombstones themselves are rather impervious to environmental degradation.

This is also true for anything underground such as tunnels and caves. Once something is removed from extreme temperatures and extreme weather, overall deterioration slows considerably.

Will we still have airports, railroad lines, highways, power lines, waterlines, or landfills?

Drilling deeper, will any of our systems survive? Will we still use electricity, paper currency, the 24-hour clock, the metric system, or the Gregorian calendar?

Technology is quickly outdating every new format for information. We’ve gone from 4-track, to 8-track, to the old 8” disks, to 5.25” disks, followed by 3.5” disks, thumb drives, remote backups, and whatever comes next.

When I get this question, I know that the person asking is secretly thinking that being a futurist is one of the coolest professions of all times, which it is. And they want some concrete process for becoming a futurist, which there isn’t.

Becoming a futurist is really a calling. You are being called by the little voices in your head to spend slightly over 24 hours a day researching and thinking about the future. And if you run out of time, your only option is to build “time-expanders” into your day to unlock enough additional brain spectrum to complete whatever insights you’re working on.

Until now, the process I’ve used has always been a secret. I’ve been debating for years whether I should reveal my mysterious process. Usually the debate is taking place between the little voices in my head, but lately the arguments have grown so loud that that they wake me up at night.

For this reason, after several months belaboring the point, I have finally decided to reveal my secret methodology for understanding the future. So here it is. (Drum roll please.)

My secret to understanding the future comes from something I carry around in my pockets – my “holes.” Whenever I lack some level of understanding of the future, I simply reach for a “hole” to gain more clarity.

My First Encounter with Holes

I spent my childhood on the edge of reality.

On the outside, I looked like a perfectly normal child, but on the inside my brain was filled with all sorts of ideas that were so far out that I felt I could never talk about them. Whenever I tried, people started to laugh and ridicule me.

Most people use their sleep to find rest and rejuvenate their bodies. But I go to sleep to find my next adventure.

Long ago when I was 12 years old, I remember having a wrestling-match dream. This is one of those dreams that appeared so intensely real that it caused me to spend the entire night wrestling with bizarre concepts that were simultaneously insulting and revealing.

The dream I was having showed me how to make holes.

All night long I found myself making holes. One hole, after another, after another, and they were all different.

No, I wasn’t making holes inside of anything or through anything. Instead, I was making some sort of magical holes for later use.

Throughout my dream I was filling my pockets with ready-to-use holes, and these holes gave me powers – the power of perception, the power of discernment, and most importantly, the power to understand things that were previously not understandable.

Whenever I came to a closed door, I could simply pull out a hole and insert it into the door and I would see what was on the other side.

Whenever someone creepy was following me, I simply pulled out a hole, stretched it until it had reached the appropriate size, and threw it down on the ground so they would fall into it.

Everywhere I looked, I found more uses for my holes. I could look under things, I could see behind things, and if someone started arguing with me, I could even put holes in their arguments.

These holes that I was carrying in my pocket became my superpower. They became my muse, my ruminator, and my source of creative inspiration.

Charging fees on the information highway of life

Living with Gatekeepers

Being raised as a child of the 1960s, it seemed that everything I wanted to know was somewhere else.

Information was hidden, locked up, or protected by people whose job it was to prevent the rest of the world from seeing their information. The flow of ideas was being barricaded and imprisoned behind the walls of corporate and academic control, and only those who could afford it were granted the rights to see it.

The closest distance between me and all the things I desperately needed to know was through the gatekeepers that had positioned themselves along the information highway.

But my holes gave me the power to “see around” the gatekeepers.

Our greatest enemy in life has always been the “unknown.” Even today with vast improvements in communications technology, we are constantly being blindsided by things we don’t know.

We live in a cruel and unforgiving world. Yet we are continually being separated from the simple solutions that could prevent mass chaos and even death, by tollbooth operators whose job it is to extract payment from us for answers we don’t even know exist.

The Cost of Ignorance

According to the USGS National Earthquake Information Center, the death toll for earthquakes in 2010 was 226,729, with roughly 222,570 deaths occurring in Haiti, and the rest happening in Chili and Tibet.

2008 was a disastrous year in Myanmar (Burma) where over 140,000 people were killed by a single storm – Cyclone Nargis.

But each of these pale in comparison to the Great Chinese Famine from 1958-1961 where death toll estimates ranged from 15-43 million and the 1931 floods in China that killed somewhere between 1-4 million, more than anyone could count.

All of these disasters could have been greatly reduce if we had the ability to see the situation more clearly, and with a little forethought, move people out of harm’s way.

The cost of ignorance is staggering.

I find myself constantly wanting to ask Charles Darwin the question, “Why have we evolved so poorly?”

Ignorance is Bliss

Yet for all the wringing-of-hands and lamenting of our own limitations, there is also tremendous value in hiding behind the great unknown.

Hidden in the clock-ticking minutes before life’s greatest disasters are peaceful serene moments of people at their best – laughing, hugging, and giving generously of themselves.

Even after a disaster, before anyone knows the extent of the damage, we see people instantly transformed from people-helping-themselves into people-helping-people. We suddenly think “less about us” and “more about them.”

So while many have paid the ultimate price for our collective ignorance, we can also view ignorance as a blessing. In a world seeking balance, we cannot live at peace without experiencing the extreme polar opposite.

If we had a lens that could give us a clear understanding of the inner workings of the earth, how differently would we live our lives?

Every hole has a beginning, middle, and end, except for misalignment holes.
They’re everywhere and nowhere all at the same time!

The Complexity of the Hole

As I mentioned earlier, my toolkit as a futurist consists of pockets filled with magical holes.

Every time I peer through one of my holes, I gain a new perspective. In much the same way photographers change lenses on their cameras to gain a new perspective, my holes allow me to see the world with insights and revelations not afforded to others.

In this moment of full disclosure, revealing the secrets I once said would never be revealed, here are a few of the remarkable holes that I typically have poised and ready for use:

See-Through Hole: Perhaps the most useful of my holes is the one that enables me to see through walls, doors, and even inside metal file cabinets.

Movable Hole: Distance is relative when you have insight, but very often the answer you are seeking lies only a few inches away from the place you’re looking. That is why the movable hole is so valuable. Simply move the hole and you will find your answer.

Data-Encryption Hole: Sometimes I have to adjust the viewing angle of the hole, and even twist it a few times to bring it into focus, but even the best encryption is no match for a truly gifted hole-user.

Answer Hole: Behind every situation that causes us to ask “why,” is an answer. Staring through an Answer Hole is a very revealing experience when we know the right questions to ask.

Backward-Looking Hole: Too often what we think is in front of us is actually behind us. The real trick is to know whether to look forward or backwards.

Stretcher Hole: If your perspective is too small, the best option may be a stretcher hole to expand your thinking. However, in most cases, the perspective is far too big, requiring a much smaller hole to bring things into focus.

Nano Holes: The problem with nanotechnology is remembering where you put your work. The devil is always in the details and details are far smaller than most people can imagine.

Slow Hole: Very often the answers I am seeking are traveling far too fast, so a “slow hole” will slow things down to just the right speed.

Hidden-Agenda Hole: When trying to understand politics, few holes are more useful than the “hidden agenda hole.” Motivations and agendas are often layered into the complex intermeshed turmoil happening inside many of our decision-makers. This one takes practice because there is seldom just one agenda in play.

Future-Vision Hole: Today, as I spend time studying our relationship with the future, I love nothing more than being able to reach into my pocket, pull out a “future-vision hole,” and place it between me and this field of knowability that separates us from the future.

Now I know what you’re thinking. “Why do you get to use magical holes and not me?” and “If you really have magical holes, why are you wrong so much of the time?”

To answer your first question, these holes can be dangerous. As Stan Lee, creator of Spiderman once said, “With great power comes great responsibility.” Yes, I am taking a great risk even revealing these holes exist. So no, you can’t have them. And don’t ask me if you can borrow one because the danger is far too great.

As for the second question, I have never been granted the ability to see the entire big picture, just pieces of it. And my ability to extrapolate the missing pieces is often fraught with misdirects and misguided conjecture leading to wrong-headed conclusions.

What I am missing is the ability to create a hole-within-a-hole, a simultaneous big-picture, little-picture hole. There is exponentially greater power that can be unleashed with overlapping holes; ones that will enable me to have a backward-looking, future-vision hole that is concurrently stationary and movable, permanently square but with flexible, stretchable sides, combining the powers of fast and slow into a left-handed, right-handed multi-perspective hole that I can call upon on at a moment’s notice.

No, I don’t have that one yet, but I can always dream.
