The Science Behind Beef-Infused Rice

The creation of beef-infused rice is a marvel of modern biotechnology, representing a sophisticated blend of cellular biology and food science. The process begins with the extraction of muscle and fat stem cells from cows. These cells are meticulously inserted into the grains of rice, which serve as a nurturing environment for cell growth. This intricate procedure takes place in a Petri dish, where the rice grains act as tiny incubators, fostering the development of animal cells.

One key factor making this process viable is the porous structure of the rice grains. This unique characteristic allows the grains to absorb and hold onto the stem cells, providing a supportive matrix that mimics the natural conditions within an animal body. To enhance this cell attachment and growth, the rice grains are coated with a layer of fish-derived gelatine. This coating not only aids in the adherence of the cells but also supplies additional nutrients, facilitating a more efficient and robust cell development process.

When compared to other cultured meat products, such as those grown in soy-based textured vegetable protein (TVP), beef-infused rice stands out due to its superior cell-holding potential and allergen-free nature. Soy and nuts, commonly used substrates for cultured meat, are limited by their allergenic properties and less optimal cell-supporting structures. Rice grains, on the other hand, offer a more conducive environment for cell growth, making them an ideal medium for producing hybrid foods that blend plant and animal components seamlessly.

This pioneering approach not only enhances the nutritional profile of the rice, adding significant amounts of protein and fat, but also paves the way for more sustainable and scalable meat alternatives. The integration of cow cells into rice grains highlights a transformative step in food technology, aiming to meet the growing global protein demand while minimizing environmental impact. Through continuous innovation and optimization, the potential of beef-infused rice and similar hybrid foods to revolutionize our diets becomes increasingly apparent.

While we won’t ever change the natural process of photosynthesis, we’re rapidly transitioning to an artificial form of photosynthesis that doesn’t require sunlight.

Photosynthesis is responsible directly and indirectly for the oxygen we breathe and the food we eat. It’s a rather inefficient process, with only about 1% of the solar energy ending up in the plant biomass. Plants convert that light energy, along with atmospheric carbon dioxide and water, into chemical energy in the form of glucose that stimulates plant growth, releasing oxygen and water along the way.

With natural photosynthesis, the biochemical reaction and the glucose delivery happen in the same location – in the plant itself.

Recently, though, a team of researchers has demonstrated the possibility of dramatically increasing plant growth efficiency with a process that allows these sequential steps to take place in two locations – so the plant can stay in the dark.

The Artificial Photosynthesis Sequence

First, they used an electrocatalytic process in a lab setting to create acetate effluent – the main component of vinegar – combining carbon dioxide (CO2), water, and solar electricity. This process, which is essentially artificial photosynthesis, takes place in an electrolyzer.

Instead of glucose, the plant nourishment produced is carbon in the form of acetate. The acetate is collected and brought to the plant, where it’s absorbed through the root system and metabolized.

The production of acetate replicates many of the benefits of natural photosynthesis. In its basic form, water and carbon dioxide are converted to oxygen and carbon (acetate), with energy (ideally solar) making it all happen.

The team tested the approach on known crops to see if they could be grown with acetate and without sunlight. Black-eyed peas, tomatoes, tobacco, rice, canola, and green peas were all able to utilize carbon from acetate when cultivated in the dark.

The benefits and future implications of breaking the photosynthesis process into these two steps are significant.

Farming Acreage and Location

This artificial photosynthesis process is estimated to be four times more efficient than sunlight-driven photosynthesis. While we wouldn’t do away with traditional farming completely, traditional farm footprints could be pared back significantly and concentrated in more fertile areas, reducing the need for extended irrigation systems to increasingly drier locations.

Researchers are already exploring how to supercharge traditional farms by adding this new artificial photosynthetic approach.

Food Factories

Well into the future, we’ll see food-growing factories similar to the indoor cannabis-growing facilities those of us in Denver are used to seeing in the city’s warehouse district. While indoor cannabis operations are incredibly energy-intensive given their need to support natural photosynthesis in an indoor environment with the use of grow lights, artificial photosynthesis-based indoor food farms would use very little energy – practically none to support the growing process.

These multi-floor indoor farms will flourish in areas with inexpensive, nonproductive land. Near the farm factories we’ll find lab factories using solar power to produce the all-important life-giving, photosynthesis-mimicking, carbon-rich acetate effluent.

Food Security on Earth …

Food from smaller farms in more preferable, secure locations, combined with indoor-grown food, will make the world’s food supply less susceptible to droughts and floods. Food factories could also be strategically located closer to cities and in other areas less suitable for farming but close to the populations that need food.

… And in Space

This technology will revolutionize the practice of growing plants in space – whether at the International Space Station or on future voyages well beyond that. We need to take advantage of every cubic inch of our habitable space vehicles, and if we can grow the same amount of food in one-fourth of the space required now, it will be a huge boost to our efforts to push deeper into space.

In fact, the acetate-based plant metabolization process described above recently won a top prize in NASA’s Deep Space Food Challenge that promotes the development of new food technologies suitable for long-duration space missions.

Food Quality

Would food grown using this artificial photosynthesis process taste or seem different in any way? There’s no reason to think it would taste different, but it might look different. In natural photosynthesis, naturally present chlorophyll, which gives plants a green coloring, supports the conversion of light to energy.

With light-less, artificial photosynthesis, it’s not clear whether these molecules might lose their green coloring and if the relative dormancy of the chlorophyll might over time lead to a genetic mutation in some plant families so they resemble what we often see today in albino plants or “albinism.” I’m not a botanist, though, and I haven’t seen any research on that question.

Coming Soon to Your Grocer?

When will we begin to see food that’s been grown in the dark? Like many innovations, from Tang to Dustbusters, our astronaut corps will be utilizing artificial photosynthesis to grow plants before any farmers on Earth do.

At this time, researchers have only scratched the surface of this technology, and they’ve just recently proven the concept. Perfecting the artificial photosynthesis process will take several more years, and scaling it will be the next hurdle beyond that.

The first widespread use won’t be with massive corporate high-rise farms in the U.S., but in indoor micro-farms in areas of the world where food security is especially threatened, including countries in central and southern Africa.

India will also likely be an early adopter given that nation’s proclivity to capitalize quickly on scientific breakthroughs, such as thorium-based nuclear energy production, as we noted last week.

I’ve previously written about lab-grown meat. And as we hinted at in that piece, we should think far more expansively about these kinds of lab processes. In fact, I can see incredible breakthroughs in the not-too-distant future with the first lab-grown house – most, if not all, of it will be made with materials grown in a lab.

Lab-Grown vs. 3D Printing

Lab-grown material is natural material that’s differently produced or manufactured. This distinguishes it from another form of lab production – 3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, that reformats materials and uses it to build objects. It doesn’t, however, “grow” them.

3D printing is impressive on its own merits. This amazing technology can even utilize cellular material – including lab-grown cellular material – as the “ink.” In fact, meat products can be formulated in a 3D printing process, but, again, the process itself doesn’t produce a lot of meat out of a little material. In other words, it’s not lab-growing meat.

The Processes

Lab-growing is the process of creating material that has the same cellular structure as the naturally occurring material. This is done by mimicking the natural formation process (let’s call that “nature-grown”) within a far shorter time span. It helps to understand the lab-grown phenomena by describing what it’s NOT.

We’ll briefly look at five lab-grow items that we’re already producing, or at least are well within the range of possibility – beef, wood, milk, apples, and diamonds.

Beef

As noted, lab-grown meat is a real thing. But are scientists growing cows in their labs? No, these aren’t test-tube cows, with in vitro origins that mature into embryos and then develop at the same pace as naturally conceived cows. We’ve been there and done that. Rather, this is test-tube beef that has the same cellular material as Bessie, but it’s obtained without the messy slaughtering aspect and the environmental impact of grazing and methane emission.

Wood

Similarly, researchers are not lab-growing trees. Instead, they’re producing lab-grown lumber – in shapes and sizes that make them usable with little waste. The biomaterial can even be used to 3D print a chair or coffee table. And lab-grown wood material is environmentally preferable since it leaves the nature-grown trees upright and intact.

Milk

Labs are manufacturing dairy products as well, but in this case, they’re not producing a gallon of milk from a milk molecule. Instead, the process utilizes fermentation of living microbes to produce dairy proteins that can be used to make those dairy products.

Apples

The science behind lab-grown fruit and vegetable products is lagging just a bit. Researchers are perfecting a cell cultivation process that produces plant biomass that tastes like, and even exceeds the nutritional properties of, the natural-grown product from which the cells were obtained. Again, the researchers aren’t growing apples, they’re growing apple material or apple biomass. Applesauce as it were.

Diamonds?

Diamonds are simply carbon that over a very long time has been transformed due to tremendous heat and pressure deep within the earth. Labs can replicate this process in 2-6 weeks, transforming pure carbon to diamonds using a process that mimics those natural, extreme high pressure, high temperature (HPHT) atmospheric conditions.

Diamonds can also be lab-produced using a newer approach called chemical vapor deposition (CVD). With CVD, a carbon seed is placed in a vacuum chamber and subjected to superheated carbon-based gases that deposit layers onto the seed.

In either case, these aren’t fake diamonds – they’re not cubic zirconium or paste. They’re the same carbon-based material as nature-grown diamonds with the same chemical, physical, and visual characteristics.

Our Lab-Grown Future

As we discussed in the context of lab-grown meat earlier this year, there will always be a market for “the real thing,” whether it’s a sirloin steak, a crisp apple, or a core of the earth diamond. But lab processes, the high-profile ones we mentioned above as well as the lab production of important staples like flour, have the potential to economically serve the world’s population and at the same time tread a little more lightly on the natural environment.

Many of the items we’ll own or see will be lab-grown. To the extent that we can mimic and speed up natural processes to produce these things, we will. That’s human nature. And we’re just at the beginning.

The Future of the Food We Eat

The list could be endless, but soon we’ll be scaling up lab processes to produce meat, cheese, dairy, grain, fish fillets, bread, ice cream, flour, butter, fruit, vegetable, spices, rice, and so many more food items.

The Future of the Materials We Use

Similarly, we’ll have access to lab-produced, less expensive formulations of leather, wood, glass, clothing, crystals, gels, diamonds, seaweed, cardboard, and plastics. The list is limited only by one’s imagination and a scientist’s eureka moment.

The Future of the Medical Products We Rely On

For many, the most exciting applications of these various lab-growing processes will be in the medical field. In the future, we’ll have an alternative source for blood and organs that are lab-manufactured from stem cells. We’ll also have lab-produced, breast milk, nutraceuticals, lotions, energy drinks, ointments, balms, and more.

As with many areas of progress, there will be tradeoffs and short-term disruptions. In exchange for this degree of eco-friendly agriculture production, for example, we’ll see fewer farming and agriculture jobs. New industries and job fields will emerge, though, as the technical, scientific, discovery stage of these breakthroughs is replaced by scaled up mass production.

Science will march on … and the rest of us had better keep up.

At first glance, the emergence of “ghost kitchens” may not seem to be an earth-shattering trend. Other equally foreboding terms for this industry include “dark kitchens” and “shadow kitchens.”

But there’s nothing nefarious or creepy about them. Ghost kitchens are simply industrial kitchens that prepare food for delivery on behalf of a restaurant or a restaurant brand. They tend to be located near their customers and are served by shared driver delivery systems or the more common companies like UberEats or DoorDash.

There are several different models. In some cases, restaurants rent out a portion of their underutilized kitchen space to other food preparers. In other scenarios, the kitchens are found within shared commercial warehouse-like space, a “commissary concept” similar to the WeWork and Regus model for office space.

An alternative approach calls for establishing a ghost kitchen facility to support the delivery service of a single brand. Reef Kitchens, for example, just announced it would host 700 ghost kitchens for Wendy’s at its facilities in North America and the U.K. Most major chains are doing the same or plan to follow suit, from Wingstop to Five Guys.

Another ghost kitchen company, Kitchen United, is taking a slightly different approach by placing ghost kitchens in more visible spaces in grocery stores, complete with kiosks or apps that allow shoppers to order takeout meals or have them delivered. The company recently announced a partnership with Kroger. Ghost Kitchen Brands has a similar arrangement with Walmart.

Why Ghosting?

Whatever the approach, the logic is clear. Consumers want their prepared food delivered. The average full-service restaurant is maintaining two food service models under one roof – one for their dine-in customers and one for their take-out or delivery customers. The latter used to be a sideline, an add-on anomaly; now that takeout and delivery is far more common, or even dominant in some restaurants, trying to do both from a single facility can be disruptive and inefficient.

The ghost kitchen phenomenon will be the norm very shortly. But it’s interesting to step back and consider what this trend says about us and our future.

What Do Ghost Kitchens Say about the Evolution of Change?

Lest anyone assume ghost kitchens are entirely a COVID-driven phenomena, the practice was in place and steadily growing several years prior to the restaurant industry upheaval of 2020. Then, in the midst of COVID, 60% of U.S. consumers reported ordering delivery or pickup at least once per week. Keep in mind, that’s call-ahead or app ordering, not drive-through service.

There’s no question the dramatic growth in ghost kitchens is an outgrowth of COVID. During 2020, out of necessity, we were eating more from home. And out of necessity, in order to survive, many restaurants relied on takeout and delivery. Some even thrived with this model and don’t see the need now to go back to offering on-premise dining.

From the delivery side of this model, services like DoorDash and UberEats were a godsend for individuals who were necessarily shut-in during 2020 and pleasant convenience for many others.

COVID is having a lasting, long-term impact on the trajectory of many aspects of our future – from healthcare, to politics, to work, and now to leisure activity. The emergence of ghost kitchens is another example of how COVID has dramatically accelerated some trends, like working from home, which we explored earlier this year.

Change is inevitable, and a crisis inevitably accelerates change.

What Do Ghost Kitchens Say about Consumers?

The shift to food delivery is an indication that we increasingly value time and convenience over experiences. Yes, there will always be an opportunity for an enjoyable sit-down experience in a more toney and pricey restaurant. And trips to faster-food restaurant chain establishments will continue to be valued as a family outing and an opportunity for everyone to unplug and socialize. But those instances will never rebound to their pre-pandemic peak.

Related to that, ghost kitchens also are an indication that we are becoming increasingly reliant on and comfortable with mobile technology and service apps. Many people resist learning these tools until they have to. And recently an older generation – just to generalize – had to and they came to love it.

One recent trend, though, that may be mildly disrupted by ghost kitchens is the loss of niche, single-location, family-owned restaurants. If these establishments continue to rely on street-front space and foot traffic, they’ll be in trouble, and they will decline. But if they pool resources with others to share common kitchen space, the economies may be enough for some of them to survive – at least as the provider of a delivered product.

What Do Ghost Kitchens Say about the Job Market?

Like most retail industries, restaurants are having difficulty fully staffing up. Whether people have left those niches of the job market or are just waiting out these uncertain times, retailers, including restaurants, will need to replace employees with apps and downsizing arrangements that define the ghost kitchen model.

The human element of food preparation and meal delivery remains … for now. Until they’re automated as well, jobs in both areas will shift to independent contract arrangements.

Five Additional Future Implications of Ghost Kitchens

Teens and less-educated workers will bear the brunt of the loss of restaurant labor-intensive jobs – functions like wait-staffing, busing, and hosting.

Consumers will continue to have access to wonderful, varied food thanks to ghost kitchens, but they’ll lose out on some opportunities for memorable dining out experiences.

As restaurants close their street-front locations and consolidate kitchens, commercial property will be even more devalued, with the kind of vacant and empty storefronts like we’ve already seen with malls and movie theaters.

Some restaurants will thrive. They’ll be able to focus on product and food innovation without worrying about all the overhead costs and facility maintenance headaches.

The economies that restaurants can achieve by reducing their footprint and sharing space will be offset by delivery charges. Consumers won’t come out ahead.

And last, in some way, somehow, Amazon will try to find a way to corner the ghost kitchen industry and then tie it to a resurrected Amazon Restaurants program!

Since I do many talks on the future of agriculture, I was recently interviewed by the Feedinfo News Service as part of their 20th Anniversary Edition.

In this interview they asked me to help them think through what the cultured meat industry would look like 20 years in the future.

To give you some background on this emerging industry, a 1998 U.S. patent filed by Jon F. Vein laid claim to the “production of tissue engineered meat for human consumption, wherein muscle and fat cells would be grown in an integrated fashion to create food products such as beef, poultry and fish.”

In 2008, PETA offered a $1 million prize to the first company to bring lab-grown chicken meat to consumers by 2012.

In November 2009, scientists from the Netherlands announced they had managed to grow meat in the laboratory using the cells from a live pig.

In 2010, Google co-founder Sergey Brin’s family foundation reached out to Dr. Mark Post to support his efforts in developing cultured meat. They also encouraged Mark to create a huge media event where the first cultured hamburger would be tasted, supporting the costs of the research and the event.

In 2012, a total of 30 laboratories around the world were conducting cultured meat research.

The cultured meat industry is evolving quickly. Here a partial transcript of the interview with the Feedinfo News Service and what the cultured meat industry will like in 2040.

FNS – To what extent in the next 20 years will cultured meat potentially traditional impact livestock production, and by extension animal feeding? Will industrial livestock and meat production find itself at a significant cost disadvantage?

Futurist Thomas Frey – A good analogy to this is ecommerce. It has taken ecommerce a full 25 years to reach 10% of all retail sales in the U.S. In the late 1990s, many were predicting the demise of physical stores altogether, but that hasn’t happened. The transition of ecommerce speaks to our human ability to make a transition and adapt to something new. It will be the same with the meat industry.

My sense is that cultured meats will start out as a novelty and quickly make their way into a variety of new kinds of foods that currently don’t exist – meat chips, meat candies, meat desserts, etc.

Rather than competing head to head with the existing industry, there is a golden opportunity to open up new markets with unusual meats like wombat meat, penguin meat, or bumblebee meat.

Other new markets will be things like kosher meats, vegan meats, non-GMO meats, and vegetarian meats.

I would be surprised if cultured meats grow to more than 10% of the meat market by 2040, and I only see half of that affecting our existing livestock and meat production. The rest will come from opening new markets.

Yes, our existing livestock and meat production will find itself at a significant cost disadvantage. Live animals are far more work than non-living organisms, but it’s not clear how much processing and production work will still be required for cultured meats.

It’s also important to ask how long before we reach “peak cultured meat?” I certainly can’t imagine it will ever reach 100%, so at what percentage will it peak, and how long will that take?

FNS – Which sectors will be the most affected by 2040: farmers, veterinarians, slaughterhouses, processing plants? And what about in our industry: the feed suppliers and feed additive companies, or the animal drug industry?

Futurist Thomas Frey – Cultured meats will have a cascading effect on other industries, but it will take time. Perhaps the biggest mistake will be to over-anticipate its affect in the near term.

Over time it will affect demands for feedstock, water, acreage for grazing, hay, veterinarians, animal medications, trucking, auction houses, auctioneers, slaughterhouses, processing plants, western wear, horses, 4H competitions, feed suppliers, meat inspectors, feed additives, FDA personnel, animal drug industry, and the overall demand for ranchland. But all this will take time and during these decades of transition it will be the perfect time to discover new opportunities.

FNS – What will be the market drivers of the cultured meat sector in 2040?

Futurist Thomas Frey – After the initial “race to be first” – first cultured bison, first cultured swordfish, first cultured rattlesnake in the mid-2020s, I expect we’ll see a period where people will try to “grow their own cultured meat farms,” followed by an underground movement of people attempting to design “super hacker foods.”

This will also give rise to a new snake oil era where people will claim their special concoction of cultured meats are a cure for everything from melanoma, to depression, to dyslexia. Will cultured meat infused with cannabis make you more calm and relaxed? Maybe!

Cultured meats will be developed for non-edible materials similar to leathers, plastic, and rubber. Think in terms of exotic materials such as tarantula skin seats, hedgehog jackets, and anteater shoes.

Over time we will develop designer materials from the stem cells of famous people. If you can imagine George Clooney handbags, Scarlet Johansen furniture, Stevie Wonder lampshades, or Drew Barrymore wallets, you’ll get the picture.

Cultured milk derived from mother’s cells will be considered far superior to other baby foods. These products will compete directly with today’s baby formula industry. Cultured blood will cause today’s blood bank industry to disappear.

Cultured baby’s blood, or ‘young blood’ with its anti-aging properties, will pave the way for a variety of “cultured” anti-aging products. Before long we will see cultured hair cells to regrow our hair and cultured skin cells to remove our wrinkles. The fountain of youth will be springing to life in a way we never anticipated.

FNS – Do you think there is a future for “cultured animal feed” production?

Futurist Thomas Frey – Very definitely. This is still an emerging field with incredible opportunities. As we add more and more sensors to our bodies, we’ll know instantly what affect the food has had on us. Expect to see lots of experimentation on trace elements, protein engineering, and rethinking our individual microbiome.

FNS – Will the concerns of today linked with animal production (pollution, antimicrobial resistance, animal welfare, food poisoning…) have disappeared from people’s mindsets by 2040?

Futurist Thomas Frey – By 2040 the lifecycle of this “cause” will have waned, but there will be new concerns over things like unexplainable cultured meat diseases that have never been seen before, hereditary shifts happening because of our new diets, and vocal alarmists over the long term effect of eating “frankenfood.”

FNS – How do you picture the feed mill of the future?

Futurist Thomas Frey – With the increasing fear of fake news and fake data, most consumers will rely on their own testing devices to sort through a product’s efficacy and value. For this reason, many of today’s concerns over topics like GMO, organic, or responsibly farmed foods, will be replaced with apps used for “certified testing” and managing “personal markers.” The work happening at today’s feed mills will be largely invisible to the end users in the future. That said, food production will continue to evolve and much of the work done at feed mills will get absorbed into the cultured meat production facilities. Many of these “meat labs” will evolve into sophisticated research facilities where many of tomorrow’s grocery store products will be born.

FNS – What will be the jobs of the future in our animal nutrition sector?

Futurist Thomas Frey – New age cultured meat producers will become known as “vat farmers” (or something similar). Each production facility will be run from a central control room with constant monitoring and testing to guide the overall quality of the product. Consumer data, in turn, will drive this, from the body sensors of those who consume the products. For this reason this emerging new industry will be run by lab techs, data analytics techs, control room monitors, account managers, salesmen, delivery people, and the grunt workers filling and cleaning the vats. Over time many of these tasks will become automated, but it will be many years before the jobs become refined enough for significant automation to take place.

FNS – Is artificial intelligence THE key to feeding a global population of 9 billion+ people in 2040 in a sustainable manner?

Futurist Thomas Frey – As the global economy improves, worldwide demand for food will continue to increase. At the same time, we are moving towards far more hyper-individualized diets, with far more concern over our individual health and well-being. The amount of data the food industry will be dealing with is about to explode exponentially, far exceeding any individual’s ability to make sense of it. That’s where AI comes into play. However, AI will only be part of the answer. I think of AI as an additional tool, not a replacement for workers.

A person with a toolbox is generally more valuable than one without. A person with a robot, is generally more valuable than one without. And a person with AI is generally more valuable than someone without AI. But every tool is constantly being upgraded. AI will break down, wear out, and need ongoing attention. Since we are the consumers, AI needs us. AI will help us think faster, smarter, and quicker than ever before in history. It will be very important, but we tend to have a distorted view of its overall importance.

Final Thoughts

There’s an adoption cycle for every emerging technology and cultured meats are no exception. Reduced environmental stress surrounding ranches, feedlots, and slaughterhouses, coupled with a cleaner, faster, cheaper, and superior food source are all marketing points that will move the needle quickly.

As global incomes improve, meat consumption rates will grow exponentially over the coming years. Demand for meat in Asia is expected to grow rapidly over the coming years.

Even some of the large companies in the meat industry are beginning to take notice. It was reported in December that mega processor Tyson had opened a $150 million fund to invest in startups that are preparing for a meatless future.

For most people the answer centers around two key questions. How does it taste, and how much does it cost?

Will there be cultured meats in your future?

The race to 5G is heating up. Telecom companies are racing against other telecom companies, cities competing with other cities, and even countries are battling against other countries in a rush to be the best.

5G is the next-generation communication network that has been christened by the media hype machine with phrases like “world-changing,” “quantum leap,” and “this will change everything” to describe what lies ahead.

When it comes to speed, 5G will offer speeds that far exceed those of 4G. Currently, 4G currently offers download speeds of 100Mbps, about five times the speed of 3G. But 5G will offer speeds up to 100Gbps or faster.

However, 5G isn’t just about speed. It’s about pervasiveness, capacity, durability, dimensionality, intelligent machines, privacy, security, trust, ethics, tons of new standards, and finding new ways to transform our own human experience.

Through the magic of our continually improving networks, we will be adding formidable computing muscle at technology’s edge, turbo-boosting the capability of every IoT sensor, blockchain transaction, payment device, and interactive dashboard.

With this brief introduction, I will take you on a journey through an industry-by-industry brainstorming session to better illustrate how this seemingly minor advancement will likely blindside everyone in business, and more specifically, those in key leadership roles.

To be sure, some of the things on the following list are already being experimented with or happening on a limited scale, but the coming decade will see 5G unfold in ways hard to imagine. Here are 88 examples designed to tease your imagination:

Future of the Banking Industry

How will our use of currency change in 10, 20, or 30 years? Will we be using cryptocurrencies, national currencies, or a combination of both? What other ways can today’s existing branch banks be leveraged into profitable enterprises? Will our existing banking industry discover those new uses before it starts closing their doors? Here are a few of the potential 5G changes coming down the pike:

Passwords will disappear

ATMs will be replaced by smartphones

Identity management will become a core discipline taught in every school

Cash will dwindle to a fraction of its use today

Driverless mobile banks will replace most existing branch banksv

Virtual tellers will replace most human tellers

Car loans will all but disappearv

Automated micro-loans will become banking’s new profit center

The agriculture industry is teetering on the edge of a data-revolution. Both food and ag-grown products will have rapidly shifting supply chains with real-time data streams highlighting every swing in consumer preference.

Pest deterrent devices will incorporate an AI system to experiment with offensive frequencies and preventative approaches until the correct one is found to effectively create a protective dome over a field

Most farm-grown produce, grains, nuts, and other crops will be date-tagged, geo-tagged, and chemical-tagged in a blockchain database to give consumers a more informed choice

For sick people in rural areas, with doctors located many miles away, traveling long distances to find a doctor can be rough. This will change as virtual healthcare becomes more common. With remote in-home examining systems, doctors are only are only a Skype or Zoom call away. They will even be able to monitor analytics, write prescriptions, and manage patient responses when needed.

Future of Dating

Forming new human relationships has always been challenging, especially when people find themselves surrounded by unfamiliar people in unfamiliar surroundings.

Single people will have the opportunity to monitor a compatibility app to discover those nearby who share similar interests

Future of Insurance

Insurance is the fine art of mitigating damage to a perceived risk. While emerging technology will reduce risk in certain areas, it will also increase risk in others. At the heart of every insurance policy is a customer making a calculated decision to hedge his or her bets against the probability of disaster. 5G will offer companies the ability to automate probability curves in real time, significantly reducing transaction costs, and opening the door for micro policies that have never been profitable in the past.

Automation will enable the creation and monitoring of micro warranties and micro policies in thousands of niche areas previously deemed unprofitable

Future of Retail

Most of our current retail is in the process of transitioning to experience-based engagements. Naturally, consumers are in control. They decide what to buy, where to buy, when to buy, and how much they’re willing to pay. In a super connected world, where information is fluid and transparent, retailers will become actively engaged in the global conversation. If not, their customers will begin the conversations without them. Physical stores are not going away any time soon, but the value they add to their communities and the variety of products they offer will remain in transition for the foreseeable future.

Final Thoughts

In much the same way that the 1985 Apple LaserWriter gave birth to desktop publishing, and the 2010 MakerBot’s Thing-O-Matic 3D printer gave birth to desktop manufacturing, a world filled with 5G will give birth to hundreds of thousands of new products, systems, and desktop industries.

Next-gen precision farm equipment, coupled with crop sensors, will mean farmers getting instant updates on how their fields are doing, allowing them or even their autonomous equipment to respond when problems first appear, and faster than ever before.

When they add drones to their toolbox, any situation suddenly has its own rapid response team and crops can be watered when needed and animals fed on time, while the farmer works more like a conductor conducting an orchestra than a grease money buried up to his or her elbows trying to fix a problem.

But farmers are not alone. 5G will add new tools to the toolbox for every doctor, lawyer, teacher, nurse, designer, engineer, dentist, CEO, and business owner. Every combination of sensors, robots, automated equipment, and unique devices will unleash a new wave of opportunity that we will soon need to manage.

But your future is all about you, and I’m sure I’ve missed many of the future technologies that you’ll be interested in. I’ve only scratched the surface of this continually evolving idea-scape. If you have additional ideas, please feel free to add to the conversation as every new pixel on the masterpiece of life will help us build a better future together.
