While there are many kinds of digital twins, this one is a twin of all the information you absorb visually through your eyes and audiologically through your ears. With a few added sensors, it will record everything you touch, taste, smell, and feel in and around your body.

After all, education is not singularly about what academia says is important. It’s about the hundreds of millions of pieces of minutia needed to turn you into the person you most want to become. And that’s where your digital twin comes into play.

Digital Twins

Imagine having perfect recall of everything you read, heard, smelled, or experienced. Imagine having a perfect recall of the third chapter of the management book you read two years ago. Imagine having perfect recall of the Ted Talk that inspired you. This podcast challenged your assumptions, and the audiobook helped you crystalize your thinking or who said what at the public forum you attended.

The digital twins I’m referring to are living, breathing replicas of your brain that will turbocharge your capabilities in ways we can’t even imagine yet. You will instantly be able to remember where you left your car keys, your presentation material for your next meeting, or that famous quote you hoped would make your argument more convincing. You will instantly be able to remember formulas you only glanced at in last year’s physics class, the instruction sheet for assembling your robot that somehow got lost, or that tiny detail captured by your surveillance drone during the last snowstorm.

Finding the perfect interface is naturally the place where the rubber meets the road. Having access to tons of data is certainly not helpful. But having access to the exact right piece of information at the moment, you need it will be incredibly valuable.

I’m not even sure what you call a user interface that takes place inside your mind, but making this interaction with our digital twin as precise, seamless, and instantaneous as possible will be the secret to making this work.

AI Engineers Hold the Key

This is where artificial intelligence (AI) comes into play and why I believe AI engineers hold the key to future education.

For most people, AI is the magical genie in some invisible box that is redefining a new state of normal on a daily basis. AI is not something that we can touch, feel, taste, swallow, or toss back and forth like a ball. Not yet, anyway. But soon, it will become part of each of these activities. The change will be so gradual it will be hard to notice until one day, and we won’t know how to live without it.

Now, if we add augmented reality (AR) to the AI, we begin to see where the true magic happens.

Adding AR to AI

The next generation of AR smart glasses will not be able to create fully immersive virtual worlds like virtual reality (VR) headsets can. Instead, they will have similar functionality to the heads-up displays found in fighter jets and luxury cars, providing a transparent overlay of information. They will be equipped with mini-microphones and speakers for a more integrated experience.

Information will be presented at the user’s eye and ear level, which may be distracting for some, but will not block out the real world as VR does. For now, AR and VR glasses will be separate due to VR’s need for more powerful computing and larger devices. However, in the future, AR and VR technology will likely be combined into a single, stylish device that allows users to switch between the two seamlessly.

AR smart glasses will offer a wide range of apps, such as cameras, social media, music, texting, newsfeeds, online shopping, audio and visual streaming, recording, and phone calls. These features will be enabled by self-contained wireless connectivity. However, video calls may prove challenging due to the device’s proximity to the user’s face.

These glasses will act as wearable minicomputers, with speakers or earbuds for audio. As we become more familiar with the technology, we will naturally adapt to using voice commands, eye-tracking, and touch controls for navigating our daily lives.

AI Buddy Bot

I like to think of this pair of smart glasses that we talk back and forth to as our AI Buddy Bot. The Buddy Bots will be combined with Assessment Bots, Coach Bots, and Teacher Bots to help our next-generation education system take shape.

The Buddy Bot, which uses a conversational interface, will interact with each person in a friendly manner and respond appropriately to different types of exchanges, whether they are positive or negative.

Over time, the Buddy Bot will become our personal companion, our confidant to share our hopes and dreams, our therapist, cheerleader, protector of our privacy, and conversational coach, able to complete our sentences before we do. The AI Buddy-Bot will get to know us intimately, from our flaws to our successes. It will become the friend we always wish we had, a source of new ideas and possibilities, and our single most valuable possession.

Adding More Bots

Assessment bots will be used to test and assess students’ understanding of the material. They will provide instant feedback on performance and offer suggestions for improvement.

Coach bots will act as guides and coaches, providing personalized support such as helping students develop a study plan or providing strategies for staying motivated.

Teacher bots will line up an ongoing series of learning experiences for students ranging from traditional to online courses and everything in between. These teacher bots will use students’ learning styles and preferences, as well as their digital twin data, to recommend the most appropriate resources. They will be able to adjust the learning experience based on progress and provide new materials as needed.

The education system will no longer be limited by time and location, allowing for learning to take place outside of traditional school hours and in various non-traditional ways.

It’s important to note that while AI-based learning is set to revolutionize education, it will also pose challenges. As AI teachers improve rapidly, we may see unrealistic high expectations for their capabilities, and it may be difficult to distinguish the value added by AI teachers from that of human teachers. It’s crucial that we invest in rigorous research and development to realize the full potential of AI in education.

Envisioning Our Future Education System

In conclusion, the future of education is poised to be revolutionized by AI. With the use of digital twins, buddy bots, assessment bots, coach bots, and teacher bots, the education system will become more personalized, efficient, and adaptive to individual students’ needs. It’s an exciting time for education and a prime opportunity to re-imagine how we approach learning in the 21st century.

I firmly believe that education is still the biggest opportunity in the online world that no one has quite cracked the code for yet.

We can always count on Elon Musk to deliver, if not a new branch of technology, at least game-changers in existing technology. He’s not that into incrementalism and minor iterative improvements.

In some ways, though, his latest venture, the Tesla Pi Phone, seems to be caught up in the methodical, predictable evolution of the smartphone but offers direct-to-satellite communications as a total game-changer for the industry. Even with that, I hope he continues his quest in this field but dreams even bigger moving forward.

Next Year’s Smartphone

From all indications, the Tesla Pi Phone, to be released late in 2022 or early next year, will push the envelope with some remarkable capabilities. These devices will have exceptional performance as well as improvements in the standard features we expect in our smartphones that increasingly compete for our time and attention.

Those features, according to rumors and industry observers, include 5G compatibility and exceptional refresh rates, picture resolution, pixel density, screen display, video recording, and more. In some of those areas, the Tesla Pi Phone will be considered industry-leading. In other ways, though, they will simply be “industry competing” or even lagging.

The true game-changer in the Tesla Pi Phone, though, and the kind of thing we would expect from Musk, is the device’s reported satellite connectivity with the Starlink constellation of satellites. This means no more dead zones in much of the world. Samsung has plans to launch 4,600 of its own satellites that would provide similar capability for its products, but once again Musk and Tesla are first.

Once again, people’s faith in Elon will be restored – he hasn’t slipped into the mundane, building only a marginally better mousetrap trap.

Smartphones of the future

But stepping back, it’s important to consider next year’s smartphones from the vantage point of imagining all they can be. Why should futurists be stuck within the confines of how to make the phone marginally better?

Where does the Tesla Pi Phone fit alongside that continuum? It represents a step and, granted, a big step – at least in that one regard: satellite connectivity. But there are plenty more game-changers to come in smartphone technology and utility.

In the future maybe we’ll still call them “smartphones” – we’ll follow that convention for now – but the device’s phone function will be buried even further within its overall functionality. Calling with our personal handheld devices is convenient and our phone numbers have become as much a permanent part of us as our social security numbers. Even so, the phone app isn’t the most frequently used utility on our smartphones by a long shot.

10 Features in Phones of the Future

What are the features that smartphone innovators like Musk and others must continue to shoot for in the future?

To be sure, smartphones will evolve into devices that support nearly every important facet of our lives, and every minute of our day. And they’ll do it more seamlessly and intuitively than ever. In a way, they’ll represent who we are and how we function. That means that they’ll no doubt have:

1. No ports

Wireless device integration and charging capabilities (see below) mean no more ports – and that means one less avenue for water damage.

2. Augmented reality integration

Future smartphone screens will be clear, enabling augmented reality functionality that will enhance communication and an application’s integration with the world beyond the phone.

3. Greater connectivity to sensors

We’ll increasingly rely on our phones to inform us about issues of concern in our bodies and nearby environments. They’ll proactively nag, warn, and make suggestions based on their constant interrogation of these sensors and other information sources.

4. Shape-shifting capability

Are you tired of your smartphone making a faded crease outline in the front pocket of your jeans? Are your smartphone dimensions wrong for fitting into a slim purse or the pocket of a backpack? Would you like to roll the phone into a cigar shape to stick behind your ear? Future smartphones will be simultaneously shapable, squishable, stretchable, and stackable with add-on peripheral devices.

5. Improved charging options

Direct solar charging of smartphones is a logical next step in keeping the devices powered up. Also, some of the same technologies being considered for charging electric vehicles, for example, embedded chargers in highways, will also be tapped for powering smartphones and other devices in our vehicles.

6. Touchless operation

Voice commands and even internal AI-informed impulses will pull up all the smartphone’s features and manage all of its applications. Boomers will no longer be scoffed at for their hunt-and-peck, one-finger smartphone keyboarding!

7. Holographic displays

Just when interpersonal video chatting becomes mainstream, we’ll quickly reach the next frontier – three-dimensional visual interaction with others using smartphones. Holographic images will be touchable, interactable, and storable as well.

8. Smart glasses, smart contacts

The glasses perched on our noses or contacts pressed onto our eyes will be wirelessly linked to wearable minicomputers, complete with speakers near the ears or even on attached earbuds. We’ll soon get the hang of giving voice commands, pointing with our eyeballs, and touching buttons or swiping on the stems of the glasses without a second thought as we navigate our social and professional life on the go.

9. Extended voice communications

Future smartphones will not only talk back and forth with us but enable us to speak directly to the devices they control.

10. Emergency alerts

Next-gen smartphones will be monitoring our health and fitness every second of every day. At times, they will know when we’re rested and functioning in peak form, but also know when we’re suboptimal, needing sleep, or past our limits. More importantly, they will have the ability to reach out for help when we no longer have the capacity to do so ourselves.

This gives some perspective to the justifiable enthusiasm around the Tesla PI Phone. Like you, I can’t wait to see and use it. But as a futurist, I know we have a long way to go and many more groundbreaking achievements to notch as we continue to put more and more of our lives literally into our own hands.

If you’ve been zoning out or raising your eyebrows when you hear references to the “metaverse,” it’s time to pay attention. It’s here. Well, at least pieces of it. As we speak, worlds are being created in cyberspace. They’re also being created or augmented literally before our eyes in the “real” world.

What’s the Metaverse?

How do we perceive the world? Through our senses, including our eyes. But that’s this world, this planet Earth, complete with people and objects made of atoms. We see the Earth-based world with our eyes. Now take a massive leap. What if there was another place, other than our atom-based world, say a byte-based world we could experience using augmented senses?

That’s a step into the metaverse. And there are many locations to choose from once you’re there.

At its most radical, one spot in the metaverse may look like a completely new cyberworld. Think The Matrix or the novel Ready Player One. The latest iteration of those may be the games Alien Worlds, Axie Infinity, or The Sandbox in which players navigate multi-planet worlds and experience all the drama and conflict across those planets that you can imagine.

A less extreme manifestation of the metaverse would be a scenario where the augmented reality is superimposed onto the real, atom-based world. Participants would share this augmented environment, meaning everyone with the correct virtual reality tools would see and experience the same augmented reality while they navigated the real world together. Pokemon GO is leading people’s thinking in this direction.

Challenges

Experts point out that technology has a long way to go before we can truly achieve a metaverse state of things with no limits or barriers. For example, there are the challenging issues of the internet infrastructure, the feasibility of having large numbers of participants interacting with each other in real-time, language barriers, and latency issues.

Some experts feel that constraints like these and others will limit the metaverse to the gaming world, where it already has a foothold and an avid clientele. Others question whether the average person will sign on, given that they’re already mistrustful of high-tech business models that simply mine and sell user data.

More Than a Game

Time will tell if the metaverse creators will overcome these hurdles. Will the experiences become a normal part of our lives, rather than just a game-driven diversion? I don’t think we’ll see one, single parallel universe/metaverse that everybody is a part of, in spite of the science fiction scenarios that are so intriguing.

Rather, we’ll be applying metaverse principles and technology on a more achievable scale that will improve our lives in a number of areas. After all, the metaverse at its highest and most noble level is a space where people can interact in real-time in a created or enhanced environment.

Is it a COVID Thing?

There’s no doubt that people’s interest in metaverse technology was accelerated by the pandemic. We didn’t hear of too many hardcore gamers complaining about isolation or a lack of human interaction. No, it was those of us who relied on real-world encounters for stimulation and sustenance who felt the isolation the worst.

Unfortunately, pandemics (COVID variants and others) will be on our mind and in the news for the foreseeable future. This is bound to drive even more interest in offering technology that enables us to live interactive lives in “safer” environments.

Coming Soon to the Metaverse Around You!

If there’s one thing we should have learned in the last 50 years, it’s to never underestimate and casually dismiss fads – especially technology-based fads. This is another one of those times.

One obvious metaverse application will be in entertainment. Instead of listening to a concert in person or even online, we’ll enjoy a shared experience as our avatars are elbow-to-elbow with our friends and all the other attendees that bought their ticket and showed up in this metaverse concert venue.

What about office work? Thanks to the metaverse, office work-from-home will be a thing of the past. No, we won’t necessarily be back in the physical office; we’ll be working and meeting in a metaverse-enabled shared space, elbow-to-elbow this time with our co-workers or potential clients.

What about Grandpa?

As with any breakthrough technologies and sea change concepts (e.g., internet and cryptocurrency), as metaverse applications like these become mainstream, some people may be left behind. That may be thanks to their own stubbornness, but in most other cases it will be due to an inability to learn to navigate or to even fathom such a drastic leap from the norm.

The challenge for metaverse developers and the industries that will offer services using the technology is to get past this hesitancy by making the applications as user-friendly as possible. Remember teaching your parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents how to: get on the internet, download an app, or send an email? And more recently how to navigate a Zoom call? With a little instruction and logical interfaces, most everyone will quickly master them.

If designers do their job well, before we know it, the vast majority of us will be in the metaverse – not necessarily gaming 20 hours a day, but occasionally and regularly interacting in virtual spaces “face-to-face” in real time.

In fact, experiencing certain aspects of our lives within the metaverse will be far easier than gaming in the metaverse. It will be natural communication, friendly discussions, business meetings, topical interactions, and so much more.

Can you imagine a future without social media? It’s probably just as hard for us to do that as it would have been for people 25 years ago to imagine a technology that would allow us to easily share information with the world.

Modern social media began in 2003 with the business-centric site LinkedIn, followed the next year by “thefacebook.com.” We’ve come a long way since then. As of 2019, there were 3.5 billion active social media users, representing 45% of the world’s population, who are online for an average of three hours a day.

What’s behind the screen?

These days, though, we’re seeing a perilous side of social media. More than ever, it’s being used to influence, rather than inform or entertain. We’re all too willing, though, to share information about ourselves – and not just by posting, but by offering up the behavioral information that can be gleaned from our engagement with various platforms. Screen time. Hover time. Friends. Likes. Clicks. Shares. Purchases. This data is a gold mine to advertisers so they can more cleverly personalize their online pitches right back at us – on social media. But enough with history and current events. What about the future of social media sites and platforms? Given that social media has become so institutionalized in our lives, it’s not going away. It’s also become a critical element of advertising. That’s why today’s Mad Men won’t let social media go away either, nor will the organizations that want to sell, sell, sell.

Predictions for the future of social media

First, new sites with new features will keep emerging. When one becomes mainstream, others will come along to fill an edgy niche. When one begins to aggressively supervise the posted content, others will emerge in the fringes.

Since many of these companies have decided to become the arbiter of acceptable content on their platform, they’ve opened themselves up to thousands of potential lawsuits by those who have been offended, in every language, every religion, every nationality, every cause, in the world. This is what I refer to as the “death by a thousand paper cuts” scenario.

Keep in mind, the speed with which a company can scale up, is also the speed with which it can be dismantled…. maybe even faster.

Second, more and more sites will form around people with shared interests, values, and lifestyles. And yes, politics. They’ll increasingly serve as homes and clubs, rather than the broad-topic, world-wide forums we’ve gotten used to. Thus, social media will divide, isolate, and compartmentalize us as a society even more. Social media becomes just the opposite, anti-social media.

Related to that, is the prediction that there will be increasing pressure for people to dominate a social media site, just like they would a club. In a way, sites will increasingly serve as a jumping off point for personal fame and fortune. They’ll be formed for that exact purpose. An online resume won’t be enough to land your next job. You’ll need an entire media channel to explain who you are.

That leads to the following major trend that perfectly captures the future linkage between social media and advertising, taking it out into the open for all to see.

The social media advertising connection takes over

The biggest developments in social media will be driven by changes in advertising in combination with artificial intelligence-powered virtual reality (VR). The two were made for each other, as described in this fascinating article from an advertising industry insider.

In a nutshell, he describes how ten years from now we’ll be experiencing social media through virtual reality, such as augmented reality glasses. The lines between real life and social media will blur. And within that experience, we’ll be more inundated than ever with advertising-related intrusions.

We’ve all opened a website and within seconds seen a photo avatar customer service representative with a dialog box. She says something along the lines of, “Welcome, are you looking to purchase one of our products today? Let me know if you have any questions.” Put that experience on steroids in the not-to-distant future.

The new friend scenario

You’re walking through the city.

The President of Future Motor Company pops into your field of VR eyeglass vision and says, “Hi Winston, we noticed that you’re coming up on our Auto City car lot on 12th Street. Now I know you bought your last car from Funday Motor America three years ago. But you’ve paid it off, and we see that you’ve been looking at EV options online. Our lot on 12th just got a shipment of seven plug-in hybrids this morning, including two SUV models similar to yours. Why don’t you come in for a quick test drive? Melissa’s at the first desk and she has all your information.”

Other types of social media-driven, pseudo-visual interactions will be less intrusive and more pleasant. But they’ll be equally life changing. Within your social media platform, you’ll have the opportunity to create or find an intriguing social media avatar – a hologram – to be a social media VR friend. Someone with whom you can slip on the VR glasses and share a hug, a cup of tea, or a glass of wine.

Will big brother advertisers continue to eavesdrop on these types of conversations? Or will the entire industry be replaced by something we haven’t seen yet? I give it 8-10 years.
